Salary Certificate for a UAE Family Visa (2026): What It Must Show, the AED 4,000 Rule, Accommodation, MOHRE Match, Attestation and Alternatives for Business Owners

A salary certificate is the employer's letter that proves you earn enough to sponsor your family in the UAE. For a wife, husband or children it must show a total monthly salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 when the employer also gives you accommodation — and then the accommodation must be written in the certificate itself. The figure must match your MOHRE labour contract, the rule is the same in every emirate, and any job title qualifies. This guide shows what a salary certificate for family visa use must state, a sample format, when attestation is needed, what to do below AED 4,000 and what business owners, partners and property owners submit instead.

📄 THE SHORT ANSWER
Total salary AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 + accommodation stated in the certificate.
The certificate comes from your employer on letterhead, signed and stamped, recently dated, with your name as in the passport, your job title and the salary breakdown. GDRFA and ICP compare it with your MOHRE contract — when the two differ, the MOHRE salary counts. Parents need AED 10,000. Partners show a company share above AED 75,000 instead.
💰
AED 4,000 total
Basic + allowances, as in the MOHRE contract
🏠
AED 3,000 + housing
Accommodation written in the certificate
👵
Parents: AED 10,000
+ AED 5,000 deposit and a 2-bedroom home
🤝
Partners: AED 75,000+

📄 What is a salary certificate for a family visa?

It is a short letter from your employer's HR department confirming that you work for the company and how much you are paid every month. The general term covers many HR letters (for banks, landlords, car loans); for a family visa it has one job: proving to GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (the other emirates) that you meet the minimum salary. u.ae lists it among the sponsor's documents together with the employment contract.

Who issues the salary certificate?

✓Private-sector employees: the employer, on company letterhead. The authority checks it against your MOHRE labour contract.
✓Government employees: the government entity issues the salary certificate — GDRFA asks for it instead of a MOHRE contract.
iFree zone employees: the free zone company, together with the free zone employment contract.

How do I get a salary certificate in the UAE?

Ask HR — many companies issue it through an HR portal within a day or two, usually free of charge. Ask for it "for a family residence visa", so HR includes the accommodation line if it applies. Meanwhile, open your labour contract in the MOHRE app or website and check that the salary matches.

✅ What must a salary certificate show for a family visa?

Checklist of what a salary certificate for a family visa must show: the sponsor's details, the total monthly salary with allowances and accommodation, and the employer's letterhead, signature, stamp and date
What the certificate must show: your details, the salary breakdown and the employer's signature and stamp.
✓Your full name exactly as in the passport, nationality, and passport or Emirates ID number.
✓Job title and joining date — any job title qualifies; the title itself is no longer a condition.
✓The total monthly salary, ideally with the breakdown: basic salary, housing, transport and other allowances. The total must reach AED 4,000.
✓Accommodation, if the company provides it — a clear line such as "The company provides the employee with accommodation". Without it, the AED 3,000 route does not apply.
✓The employer's details: letterhead, trade licence or establishment number, address and contact number.
✓Signature, name and position of the signatory, and the company stamp.
✓A recent date — use a certificate issued shortly before you apply; an old one is often refused.
⚠️
The accommodation must be in the certificate itself. A tenancy contract or a separate letter does not replace it. If your salary is between AED 3,000 and AED 4,000, this one line decides whether you can sponsor.

🖊️ Is there a salary certificate format for the family visa?

There is no official template; any clear letter with the points above works. This salary certificate sample shows the salary certificate format we see accepted most often — give it to HR as a guide:

[Company letterhead] · Date: [DD Month YYYY]

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN — SALARY CERTIFICATE

This is to certify that Mr/Ms [full name as in passport], [nationality], passport no. [number], Emirates ID no. [number], has been employed with [company name] as [job title] since [joining date].

His/her total monthly salary is AED [amount], made up of basic salary AED [amount], housing allowance AED [amount], transport allowance AED [amount] and other allowances AED [amount]. [If applicable: The company provides the employee with accommodation.]

This certificate is issued at the employee's request for his/her family residence visa application, without any liability on the company.

[Name and position of signatory] · [Signature] · [Company stamp]

Should the salary certificate be addressed to GDRFA or ICP?

Either works: "To whom it may concern", or addressed to GDRFA Dubai or ICP. What matters is the content and the stamp. Arabic or English is accepted; an English certificate does not need translation for the visa file.

💵 Which salary counts: basic or total?

The total salary in your MOHRE contract — basic plus allowances. A basic salary of AED 2,500 with allowances bringing the total to AED 4,200 qualifies. Do not confuse this with the Golden Visa by salary, which looks at the basic salary only (AED 30,000).

Minimum salary on the salary certificate for a UAE family visa: AED 4,000 for wife and children, AED 3,000 with accommodation, AED 10,000 for parents, and spouses' salaries combined as an exception
Family visa salary thresholds: AED 4,000, AED 3,000 with accommodation, AED 10,000 for parents.

Same, with company accommodationAED 3,000Total salary + accommodation written in the certificate
ParentsAED 10,000Total salary, plus AED 5,000 refundable deposit and a 2-bedroom home
10-year Golden Visa by salary (comparison)AED 30,000Basic salary only, plus other conditions

What if my salary certificate and my MOHRE contract show different salaries?

The MOHRE salary counts. GDRFA and ICP see your MOHRE contract in the system. If the letter shows more than the contract, the authority uses the contract figure; if the contract is out of date, ask your employer to update it with MOHRE before you apply. More detail in our minimum salary for a family visa guide.

Does the number of children change the minimum salary?

No. The same AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 with accommodation) applies whether you sponsor one family member or five, and in every emirate. See the full UAE family visa rules.

⚖️ Can I sponsor my family with a salary below AED 4,000?

Two routes exist:

1
Accommodation: with a salary of at least AED 3,000, the employer states in the salary certificate that it provides accommodation.
2
Combining both salaries (spouses only): when husband and wife both work, their salaries can be combined to reach AED 4,000 as an exception. Both salary certificates are submitted; the authority decides case by case.

Other relatives' income cannot be added. When the salary is low, the authority may also ask for bank statements for the last three months.

🏛️ Does the salary certificate need attestation for a family visa?

Usually not. A salary certificate issued in the UAE by your employer, signed and stamped, is normally accepted as it is, because the authority checks the salary against MOHRE. Salary certificate attestation by the Chamber of Commerce (and then MOFA) is mainly asked by banks, embassies and foreign authorities — for example when the certificate is used abroad. If a typing centre or the authority asks for an attested copy in your case, the Chamber of Commerce step comes first.

What does need attestation for the family visa are the relationship documents from abroad — the marriage certificate and the children's birth certificates (home country, UAE Embassy, MOFA). See our MOFA attestation guide.

🏢 I own a business or property — what do I submit instead of a salary certificate?

Self-employed sponsors have no employer to issue one, so they prove their status differently:

SponsorInstead of a salary certificate
Partner or investorTrade licence and the company MOA showing your own share above AED 75,000
Property ownerTitle deed — a property of any value can give a 2-year property investor visa that lets you sponsor family
Golden Visa holderThe Golden Visa itself; family members can be sponsored for up to 10 years
Freelancer / Green VisaFamily sponsorship announced, but not applied in practice yet

🔁 Government jobs, free zones, job changes and renewals

I work for the government — what do I submit?

The salary certificate from your government entity. GDRFA asks government-sector sponsors for the salary certificate and private-sector sponsors for the employment contract.

Do I need a new salary certificate to renew my family visa?

Yes. Renewal needs the same documents as the first application, so ask HR for a fresh certificate and check that you still meet the salary. See the family visa renewal cost guide.

I changed jobs — which salary certificate do I use?

The one from your new employer, once the new MOHRE contract and residence are issued. See family visa after a job change.

🔄 What changed? Old rules vs 2026

RuleBeforeNow (2026)
Job titleSome professions could not sponsor regardless of salaryAny job title, if the salary rule is met
ParentsAbout AED 20,000 salaryAED 10,000 + AED 5,000 deposit + 2-bedroom home
Property ownersMinimum property value for a residence visaAny value: 2-year property investor visa
Salary below AED 4,000RefusedException possible by combining spouses' salaries

🚫 Why is a salary certificate rejected?

✕Basic salary only. The letter shows the basic salary and the total is not visible.
✕Higher than the MOHRE contract. The authority uses the MOHRE figure, so an inflated letter does not help.
✕Accommodation missing. A salary between the two thresholds without the accommodation line.
✕Name mismatch. The name differs from the passport spelling.
✕Old date, no stamp or no signature.

❓ Frequently asked questions

1. What salary must the salary certificate show for a UAE family visa?

2. Is the basic salary or the total salary used for a family visa?

The total salary in your MOHRE contract: basic plus allowances. Only the Golden Visa by salary looks at the basic salary (AED 30,000).

3. Where must the accommodation be mentioned?

In the salary certificate itself, with a line such as 'The company provides the employee with accommodation'. A separate letter or a tenancy contract does not replace it.

4. Who issues the salary certificate for a family visa?

Your employer's HR department, on company letterhead, signed and stamped. Government employees get it from their government entity; free zone employees from their free zone company.

5. What if my salary certificate and MOHRE contract show different amounts?

The MOHRE salary counts. If your contract is out of date, ask your employer to update it with MOHRE before you apply.

6. Does the salary certificate need attestation for a family visa?

Usually not when it is issued in the UAE by your employer, signed and stamped. Chamber of Commerce and MOFA attestation are mainly needed for banks, embassies or use abroad, or if the authority asks for it.

7. Can I sponsor my family with a salary below AED 4,000?

Yes in two cases: AED 3,000 or more with accommodation stated in the salary certificate, or, as an exception, by combining husband's and wife's salaries. The authority decides case by case.

8. Can I add my wife's salary to mine?

Yes, as an exception: spouses' salaries can be combined to reach AED 4,000. Both salary certificates are submitted, and GDRFA or ICP decides. Other relatives' income cannot be added.

9. Does my job title matter?

No. Any job title can sponsor a family, as long as the salary rule is met.

10. What salary do I need to sponsor my parents?

AED 10,000 a month, plus a refundable deposit of AED 5,000 and a two-bedroom home. The parents visa is issued for 1 year and renewed yearly.

11. Is there an official salary certificate format?

No. Any clear letter with your name as in the passport, passport or Emirates ID number, job title, joining date, salary breakdown, accommodation if provided, and the employer's signature, stamp and date works.

12. I own a company. What do I submit instead of a salary certificate?

Your trade licence and the company MOA showing your own share above AED 75,000.

13. I own a property. Do I need a salary certificate?

No. A property of any value can give a 2-year property investor visa, and with it you can sponsor your family using the title deed instead of a salary certificate.

14. Can freelancers or Green Visa holders sponsor family with an income letter?

Family sponsorship for freelance and Green Visa holders has been announced but is not applied in practice yet.

15. How recent must the salary certificate be?

Use one issued shortly before you apply. An old certificate is often refused, so ask HR for a fresh one for each application.

16. Do I need a new salary certificate to renew my family visa?

Yes. Renewal needs the same documents as the first application, including a fresh salary certificate.

17. Should the salary certificate be in Arabic?

Arabic or English is accepted for the family visa. An English certificate does not need translation.

18. Who should the salary certificate be addressed to?

'To whom it may concern', or GDRFA Dubai or ICP. The content, signature and stamp matter more than the addressee.

19. Will a higher salary on the letter help me qualify?

No. The authority checks the MOHRE contract, so a letter showing more than the contract does not help and can delay the application.

20. Does the minimum salary increase with more children?

No. The same AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 with accommodation, applies whether you sponsor one family member or several.

21. Are bank statements needed with the salary certificate?

Not always. They are asked mainly for parents and exception cases, usually for the last three months.

22. I changed jobs. Which salary certificate do I use?

The one from your new employer, once the new MOHRE contract and your new residence are issued.
