UAE Family Visa Rules 2026: Who Can Sponsor, Minimum Salary, Age Limits, Parents, Siblings, Housing and Documents

The UAE family visa rules in 2026 are simple at their core: a resident earning AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, can sponsor a wife or husband and children — sons up to 25 and daughters while unmarried, with no age limit. Parents need a salary of AED 10,000, a refundable deposit of AED 5,000 and a two-bedroom home. The salary rule is the same in Dubai and every other emirate. This guide sets out the current rules, the requirements and documents, the special cases (siblings, in-laws, stepchildren) and the old rules that many websites still show.

👪 Who can sponsor a family visa in the UAE?

Any foreign resident with a valid UAE residence visa who meets the salary rule — an employee in the private or government sector, an investor or partner, a property owner, a freelancer, or a Green or Golden Visa holder. Since the rules moved from job titles to salary, the profession does not matter: what counts is the monthly income.

✓Employees: private sector (MOHRE contract), government or free zone — salary shown in the labour contract or salary certificate.
✓Investors and partners: sponsor through their company — see our investor family visa guide.
✓Golden Visa holders: sponsor their family under the Golden Visa — see the Golden Visa page.
✕Visit visa holders cannot sponsor: the sponsor needs a valid UAE residence.

💰 What is the minimum salary for a UAE family visa?

AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 a month plus accommodation provided by the employer. The same rule applies in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates. Parents are the exception: sponsoring them needs AED 10,000 a month.

Can I sponsor my family on AED 3,000 salary?

Yes — if your employer gives you accommodation (company housing, or housing written into the contract). Without company accommodation, the minimum is AED 4,000. Our family visa calculator shows the cost for your family.

What happens when my son turns 25?

He can no longer stay on the family visa when it comes up for renewal. He needs his own residence — an employment visa, a student visa or another category. Plan the change before the family visa expires, so he does not run into the grace period and fines. A son with special needs is the exception: he can stay sponsored without an age limit.

What happens when my daughter gets married?

A married daughter moves to her husband's sponsorship (or her own visa). Her father's or mother's family visa is then cancelled and a new visa is issued under the new sponsor.

👵 What are the rules for sponsoring parents in the UAE?

Parents have their own, stricter rules: a monthly salary of AED 10,000, a refundable deposit of AED 5,000 and a two-bedroom (2BHK) home. The parents' visa is issued for 1 year and renewed every year — not 2 years like a wife or children. The deposit is refunded when the visa is cancelled.

🧩 Can I sponsor my brother, sister, in-laws or other relatives?

Only as a special case. Siblings, parents-in-law, stepchildren and other relatives are not covered by the normal family visa rules. GDRFA or ICP can approve them case by case — for example an orphaned or dependent sibling — but expect a lot of extra documentation (proof of dependency, no other guardian, custody or court papers), and the visa is issued for 1 year at a time. Ask us before you collect documents: we tell you whether your case is likely to be accepted.

Can I sponsor my wife's parents?

In-laws are a special case: possible in some situations, with more documents, a 1-year visa and approval by the immigration authority. They do not follow the normal parents' route.

Can I sponsor my stepchildren?

Yes in many cases, but as a special case: you need the custody papers and, usually, the other parent's consent, all attested.

👩 Can a woman sponsor her husband and children in the UAE?

Yes. A working woman with a valid UAE residence can sponsor her children and her husband. For children, the normal salary rule applies. For a husband, GDRFA or ICP may ask for more — for example a higher salary or extra documents — and decide the case. Message us with your salary and visa type and we check before you apply.

🏠 Is a tenancy contract required for a family visa?

EmirateWife, husband, childrenParents
DubaiTenancy contract not requiredTwo-bedroom (2BHK) home required
Other emiratesTenancy contract requiredTwo-bedroom (2BHK) home required

Can my family live in a shared flat?

In Dubai, the visa for a wife or children does not need a tenancy contract. In the other emirates the tenancy is checked, and for parents a two-bedroom home is needed everywhere — a shared room or a company bed space will not be accepted for parents.

📂 Family visa documents required: what do I need for a UAE family visa?

1
Passports of the sponsor and each family member, and passport photos.
2
The sponsor's residence and Emirates ID, plus the salary certificate or labour contract.
3
Attested marriage certificate (for a wife or husband) and attested birth certificates (for children).
4
Tenancy contract — in the other emirates, and a two-bedroom home for parents.
5
Health insurance for each family member, and the medical fitness test in the UAE for everyone aged 18 and over.

Do marriage and birth certificates need attestation?

Yes — the rule has not changed. A certificate issued outside the UAE must be attested in the home country, by the UAE embassy there and by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), and translated into Arabic where needed. See our MOFA attestation guide or our attestation service.

🕰️ Old family visa rules vs 2026: what changed?

Searches for "UAE family visa rules 2022" are still common, and many pages — and AI answers — repeat rules that no longer apply. Here is the difference:

Old family visa rules vs 2026: AED 4,000 salary with any job title, sons up to 25 instead of 18, parents AED 10,000 instead of AED 20,000, and a 2-year family visa with parents renewed every year
What changed: job title no longer matters, sons up to 25, parents from AED 10,000, family visa for 2 years.

🚫 What are the most common family visa mistakes?

✕Following old rules. Pages showing a son limit of 18 or AED 20,000 for parents are out of date.
✕Unattested certificates. A marriage or birth certificate without embassy and MOFA attestation stops the application.
✕A one-bedroom flat for parents. Parents need a two-bedroom home.
✕Forgetting the son's 25th birthday. Plan his own visa before the family visa runs out.
✕Applying for a sibling without advice. Special cases need the right documents from the start.

❓ Frequently asked questions

1. What are the UAE family visa rules in 2026?

A UAE resident earning at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, can sponsor a wife or husband and children: sons up to 25 and daughters while unmarried. Parents need a salary of AED 10,000, an AED 5,000 refundable deposit and a two-bedroom home. The family visa is issued for 2 years; parents for 1 year.

2. What is the minimum salary for a family visa in the UAE?

AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 a month plus accommodation provided by the employer. The same rule applies in Dubai and the other emirates.

3. Does my job title matter for a family visa?

No. Under the current rules the sponsor qualifies on salary, not on profession. Older rules linked sponsorship to certain job titles; that no longer applies.

4. Until what age can I sponsor my son in the UAE?

Up to 25. After 25 he needs his own residence — for example an employment, student or other visa. A son with special needs can stay on the family visa without an age limit.

5. Until what age can I sponsor my daughter?

There is no age limit for a daughter as long as she is unmarried.

6. What are the rules for sponsoring parents in the UAE?

A salary of AED 10,000 a month, a refundable deposit of AED 5,000 and a two-bedroom (2BHK) home. The parents' visa is issued for 1 year and renewed every year.

7. Is the parents' deposit refundable?

Yes. The AED 5,000 deposit is refunded when the parents' visa is cancelled.

8. Can I sponsor my brother or sister in the UAE?

Only as a special case. Siblings, in-laws and other relatives can be considered by GDRFA or ICP with a lot of extra documents, and the visa is issued for 1 year. Approval is decided case by case.

9. Can I sponsor my wife's parents (in-laws)?

In-laws are a special case: possible in some cases, with more documents, a 1-year visa and approval decided by the immigration authority.

10. Can a woman sponsor her husband and children in the UAE?

Yes, a working woman with a valid residence can sponsor her children and her husband. For a husband, GDRFA or ICP may ask for more — for example a higher salary or extra documents — so we check the case before applying.

11. Is a tenancy contract required for a family visa?

In Dubai, a tenancy contract is not required for a wife or children. In the other emirates, a tenancy contract is required. For parents, a two-bedroom home is required.

12. How long is a UAE family visa valid?

2 years for a wife, husband or children. Golden Visa holders can get family visas for up to 10 years. Parents and special cases such as siblings and in-laws get 1 year.

14. Is a medical test needed for a family visa?

Yes, for family members aged 18 and over. The medical fitness test is done at an approved centre in the UAE after the entry permit, before the residence is stamped.

15. Are the family visa rules the same in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

The salary rule and the age limits are the same in every emirate. Housing differs: Dubai does not ask for a tenancy contract for a wife or children; the other emirates do.

16. Can I sponsor my family on AED 3,000 salary?

Yes, if your employer provides the accommodation. Without company accommodation, the minimum is AED 4,000.

17. Can I sponsor my stepchildren?

Stepchildren are a special case and need extra documents, such as the court or custody papers and the other parent's consent. Ask us before applying.

18. Can my family come on a visit visa and then change to a residence visa?

Yes. The sponsor can apply for the residence while the family is in the UAE, and the visa is changed inside the country.

19. What happens to my family's visas if I lose my job?

The family's visas depend on the sponsor's residence. When the sponsor's visa is cancelled, the family's visas must be cancelled or moved, and the family has a grace period to leave or get a new visa.

20. Can Golden Visa holders sponsor family without the salary rule?

Golden Visa holders can sponsor their family, including parents, under the Golden Visa rules, with family visas for up to 10 years. Ask us to check your category.

21. Have the UAE family visa rules changed in 2026?

The core rules stay the same in 2026: AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, sons up to 25, unmarried daughters, parents AED 10,000. Many websites still show older rules, such as a son limit of 18 or AED 20,000 for parents.
