MOFA Attestation in the UAE (2026): Documents for Family Visas, Jobs and Companies — Steps, Fees and Timelines
MOFA attestation is what makes a foreign document valid in the UAE. A marriage certificate, a birth certificate, a degree or a company document issued in another country is accepted by UAE authorities only after the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has attested it. To get that stamp, the process works backwards: MOFA first needs the UAE Embassy in the country that issued the document, and that embassy first needs the country's own foreign ministry. This guide explains which documents need MOFA attestation for a family visa, an employment visa or a company, how every step works, what has changed now that many UAE embassies attest for MOFA too, what it costs and how long it takes.

📜 What is MOFA attestation?
MOFA attestation is the stamp of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, known for some years as MOFAIC) on a document. For a document issued outside the UAE, it is the last step of the attestation chain: it confirms that the document has already been checked in its country of origin and by the UAE Embassy there. Only then is it valid for official use in the UAE.
Why is MOFA attestation required?
UAE authorities do not check certificates from every country themselves. The attestation chain does it for them: each office confirms the stamp of the office before it, and MOFA confirms the UAE Embassy's. A foreign document without MOFA attestation is not accepted for a UAE family visa, an employment visa or a company registration.
⏳ Start early: attestation takes 2 weeks to 3 months
Attestation is part of preparing your documents. It is not part of the visa or work permit application, and that has consequences:
- You can only start once you have the document. The attestation application needs the original certificate in hand.
- The application waits for the attestation. A family visa, an employment visa or a company registration cannot go ahead until the attested documents are ready.
- Every country is different. Some finish in two weeks; others add notary, state or ministry stages that stretch the process to three months.
- Plan ahead. Collect every document you will need first, then start the attestation before anything else, so there is no delay later.

📂 Which documents need MOFA attestation?
Any official document issued outside the UAE that you will use for a UAE visa, a job or a company needs MOFA attestation. These are the documents we attest most often.

👨👩👧 Documents for a family visa
When you sponsor your family, a certificate proves each relationship, and each of those certificates must be attested:
| You sponsor | Document to attest | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Your wife or husband | Marriage certificate | That you are married — needed whichever spouse is the sponsor |
| Your children | Each child's birth certificate | That you are the child's parent |
| Your mother and father | Your own birth certificate | Your parents' names, so it proves they are your parents |

🎓 Documents for an employment visa: degree attestation
If your job in the UAE is a skilled profession, your educational certificate — your degree or diploma — must be attested. Attest it before you apply, so the work permit and employment visa are not held up waiting for it.
🏢 Documents for a company: commercial document attestation
Registering a foreign company in the UAE — for example a branch of a company that exists abroad — needs the parent company's documents attested too, such as:
- its trade licence or certificate of registration from its home country;
- the minutes of meeting or board resolution that approves the UAE company;
- other corporate documents, such as the memorandum and articles of association.
MOFA charges more for commercial documents than for personal certificates — see the fees below.
🔁 How MOFA attestation works: the chain runs backwards
The easiest way to understand attestation is to start from the end — the stamp you need — and work backwards:
So in practice your document travels the other way round, starting in the country that issued it. The tag on each step shows who attests it:
As a rule, MOFA attests a document issued abroad only after the UAE Embassy or Consulate responsible for the issuing country — normally the one in that country — has attested it, and the embassy, in turn, needs that country's foreign ministry first.
Every country has its own first steps
Steps 3 and 4 are the same for everyone. Steps 1 and 2 depend on the country that issued the document: some need a notary first, others also need a state or regional attestation before the foreign ministry. A few examples:
| Document issued in | Before the UAE Embassy |
|---|---|
| United Kingdom | Legalisation by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) |
| India | Ministry of External Affairs (MEA); many documents need a notary and a state-level attestation first |
| Pakistan | Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan |
| Other countries | The notary, state or ministry steps that country requires — we check yours before we start |
⚡ Before and now: UAE Embassy and MOFA attestation together
Before: two separate stages
The UAE Embassy in the country of origin attested the document. The document then had to be sent to the UAE by courier, and the MOFA attestation was processed here as a separate application: two stages, two submissions and an extra international courier.
Now: both attestations at the UAE Embassy
Many UAE embassies and consulates now do both attestations together. One application at the UAE Embassy covers the embassy's attestation and the MOFA attestation, so the document no longer has to come to the UAE for a separate MOFA step. The attested document is issued digitally and can be checked on MOFA's verification website, verify.mofa.gov.ae.
MOFA offers this through selected UAE missions. In October 2026 the MOFA website described it for the UAE missions in the United Kingdom, India (New Delhi and Mumbai), Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Qatar, South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, among others. Where a mission does not offer it, the traditional route still applies.

| Before (traditional) | Now (combined at the UAE Embassy) | |
|---|---|---|
| UAE Embassy attestation | In the country that issued the document | In the country that issued the document |
| MOFA attestation | Separately, in the UAE, after the documents arrive | In the same application, through the UAE Embassy |
| Sending documents to the UAE | Needed, by courier | Not needed for the MOFA step |
| Fees | Embassy fee (local currency) + MOFA fee (AED 150 per personal document) | The same: embassy fee (local currency) + MOFA fee (AED 150 per personal document) |
| What you save | — | Courier costs and time |
| Speed | Slower | Much faster |
| Availability | Wherever the combined route isn't offered | Selected UAE missions — check yours |
Before you choose this route, keep in mind:
💳 How much does MOFA attestation cost?
The total is the sum of every office in the chain. The MOFA attestation fee is fixed; the other fees depend on the country:
MOFA fees as listed in MOFA's Attestations Guide, checked 10 October 2026; MOFA's website is the final reference. With the combined Embassy + MOFA route, both the embassy fee and the MOFA fee still apply.

📌 Documents issued in the UAE
A document issued in the UAE — for example a UAE birth certificate or a UAE degree — needs no UAE Embassy step to be used here: MOFA attests it directly, subject to the issuing authority's requirements. For use abroad, MOFA's service can add attestation by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the destination country, and that country's own embassy may also need to attest it.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. What is MOFA attestation?
MOFA attestation is the stamp of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA, known for some years as MOFAIC) on a document. For a document issued abroad, it is the last step of the attestation chain, and only after it is the document valid for official use in the UAE — for example for a family visa, an employment visa or a company registration.
2. Why do foreign documents need MOFA attestation in the UAE?
Because UAE authorities accept a foreign certificate only when its chain of stamps is complete: the issuing country confirms the document, the UAE Embassy there confirms that country's stamp, and MOFA confirms the UAE Embassy's. Without MOFA attestation, the document is not accepted for a UAE visa, job or company.
3. Which documents need attestation for a UAE family visa?
The certificate that proves each relationship: your marriage certificate to sponsor your wife or husband, each child's birth certificate to sponsor your children, and your own birth certificate to sponsor your parents. If they were issued outside the UAE, each one needs MOFA attestation.
4. Which document do I attest to sponsor my parents?
Your own birth certificate — the sponsor's. It names your mother and father, so it proves they are your parents. It needs the full attestation chain, ending with MOFA, before the parents' visa application.
5. Does my marriage certificate need MOFA attestation for a spouse visa?
Yes. A marriage certificate issued abroad must be attested by the issuing country's authorities, the UAE Embassy in that country and MOFA before you can sponsor your wife or husband — whichever spouse is the sponsor.
6. Does my child's birth certificate need attestation?
Yes. Each child's birth certificate issued abroad needs the full attestation chain, ending with MOFA attestation, before you apply for the child's residence visa.
7. Do I need degree attestation for a UAE employment visa?
If the job is a skilled profession, yes: your educational certificate — degree or diploma — must be attested. Whether a job needs it depends on the profession, so check with your employer early and start the attestation before you apply, because it can take from 2 weeks to 3 months.
8. Which company documents need attestation to register a foreign company?
The parent company's documents from its home country, such as its trade licence or certificate of registration, the minutes of meeting or board resolution that approves the UAE company, and other corporate documents such as the memorandum and articles of association. MOFA charges AED 2,000 per commercial document.
9. How do I attest documents from MOFA?
Work backwards from MOFA: MOFA needs the UAE Embassy's attestation from the country that issued the document, and the UAE Embassy needs that country's foreign ministry. So you start in the country of origin — with a notary or other local step where required, then the foreign ministry, then the UAE Embassy — and finish with MOFA attestation.
10. Can MOFA attest a foreign document without UAE Embassy attestation?
Generally no. MOFA attests a document issued abroad only after the UAE Embassy or Consulate responsible for the issuing country — normally the one in that country — has attested it, and the embassy in turn needs that country's foreign ministry first.
11. Is an apostille enough for the UAE?
No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone does not make a document valid in the UAE. In some countries, such as the UK, the foreign ministry's legalisation is itself an apostille; others, such as India and the United States, issue a separate attestation or authentication for documents going to the UAE. Either way, UAE Embassy and MOFA attestation are still needed.
12. How long does MOFA attestation take?
For a document issued abroad, the complete attestation takes from 2 weeks for some countries to 3 months for others, depending on the steps that country requires. Start it before your visa, job or company application.
13. Can the UAE Embassy do the MOFA attestation as well?
Yes, at many UAE embassies and consulates. One application at the UAE Embassy covers both the embassy's attestation and the MOFA attestation, so the document no longer needs a separate MOFA step in the UAE. MOFA offers this through selected missions, so check your country first.
14. Is the combined UAE Embassy and MOFA attestation cheaper?
No. You still pay both: the UAE Embassy's fee in that country's currency and the MOFA fee in AED (AED 150 per personal document). What you save is the courier cost of sending the documents to the UAE, and time.
15. How much is the MOFA attestation fee?
According to MOFA's Attestations Guide (checked 10 October 2026), AED 150 per personal document such as a birth, marriage or educational certificate, and AED 2,000 per commercial document. The UAE Embassy and home-country fees come on top and vary by country.
16. Can I apply for MOFA attestation online?
Yes. MOFA applications are made through MOFA's website or app with a UAE PASS login, and many UAE embassies abroad accept one online application for both their own and MOFA's attestation. The original document is still required.
17. How can I check that a UAE attestation is genuine?
A document attested through MOFA's digital route can be checked on MOFA's verification website, verify.mofa.gov.ae, with the attestation reference number and the issue date.
18. Do documents issued in the UAE need UAE Embassy attestation?
Not for use in the UAE: MOFA attests them directly, subject to the issuing authority's requirements. For use abroad, MOFA's service can add attestation by the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the destination country, and the destination country's embassy may also need to attest the document.
19. Can 800 DOCS handle the whole attestation for me?
Yes. 800 DOCS handles every step — the local attestation in the country of origin, the foreign ministry, the UAE Embassy and MOFA — for marriage, birth, educational and company documents. Send your documents on WhatsApp to get started.
