Birth Certificate Attestation for UAE Visas (2026): The Full Chain From Your Home Country to MOFA, Country Differences, Arabic Translation, Cost and Processing Time

Birth certificate attestation is what turns a birth certificate issued abroad into a document the UAE accepts for a residence visa. You need it to sponsor a son or a daughter, and you need your own attested birth certificate to sponsor your parents. The chain always runs the same way: first the authorities of the country that issued the certificate, then the UAE Embassy in that country, and last the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which charges AED 150 per personal document. This guide explains who needs birth certificate attestation for UAE residence visas, each step, how the route differs for India, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the USA, what to do with a UAE birth certificate, translation, cost and time.

📜 THE SHORT ANSWER
Home country → UAE Embassy → MOFA. The MOFA fee is AED 150 per birth certificate.
Start in the country that issued the certificate (a local or state step where required, then its foreign ministry), get the UAE Embassy's attestation there, then finish with MOFA in the UAE — online with UAE PASS. An apostille alone is not enough, because the UAE is not part of the Apostille Convention. Allow 2 weeks to 3 months, and do it before the visa application.

👪 Who needs birth certificate attestation for a UAE visa?

Anyone who uses a foreign birth certificate as proof of a family relationship in a UAE immigration file. GDRFA Dubai and ICP ask for the "duly attested" birth certificate because it is the only document that links the sponsor to the child — or the sponsor to his or her parents.

✓Son or daughter visa: each child's birth certificate, showing the sponsor as father or mother. Sons can be sponsored up to 25; daughters at any age while unmarried. See the son visa and daughter visa guides.
✓Parents visa: the sponsor's own birth certificate, which shows the parents' names — see the parents visa guide.
iSiblings and stepchildren: special cases — usually several attested birth certificates to prove the link.

Do I need my own birth certificate attested for a spouse visa?

Usually not. A wife or husband is linked by the attested marriage certificate. Your own birth certificate becomes necessary when you sponsor your parents, and some sponsors attest it early for that reason. The full list per family member is in our family visa documents checklist.

🔗 What is the birth certificate attestation chain?

Attestation works backwards from MOFA: MOFA accepts a foreign document only after the UAE Embassy in the issuing country has attested it, and the embassy accepts it only after that country's foreign ministry. So you start where the certificate was issued:

The birth certificate attestation chain in three stages: the home country and its foreign ministry, the UAE Embassy in the issuing country, and MOFA attestation online with UAE PASS
Three stages: home country and foreign ministry, UAE Embassy, then MOFA in the UAE.
1
Get the right original PREPARE
Use the official, registered birth certificate — not a hospital birth notice. Check every name, date and the parents' names against the passports before you start.
2
Local or state attestation HOME
Some countries need a notary, state or civil-registry step first (for example a state department in India or a civil registry office in many other countries).
3
Foreign ministry of the issuing country MINISTRY
The country's foreign ministry attests or legalises the certificate. In countries that issue apostilles, this is often the apostille itself.
4
UAE Embassy or Consulate APPLY
The UAE mission in that country attests the certificate. At many missions, one application now covers the MOFA attestation too.
5
MOFA attestation in the UAE DONE
Apply on the MOFA website or app with UAE PASS, upload the document, pay AED 150 and choose courier collection (AED 40 for normal delivery inside the UAE, about 3 working days) — then use it for the visa.

The MOFA birth certificate attestation is the last stamp. Birth certificate attestation Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ajman — the chain is the same in every emirate, because MOFA is a federal ministry. Read the full background in our MOFA attestation guide.

What documents do I need to start?

1
The original birth certificate — not laminated; MOFA does not accept laminated documents.
2
A copy of the passport of the person named on the certificate (and of the parents for a child's certificate).
3
Your UAE PASS for the MOFA step (or someone who applies for you).
4
An authorisation letter if an agent or relative submits it in the home country — check the local rule.

❌ Is an apostille enough for a birth certificate in the UAE?

No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille alone does not make a birth certificate valid here. In some countries the foreign ministry's legalisation is an apostille (the UK and the Philippines, for example); the UAE Embassy then attests that apostilled certificate, and MOFA finishes it. In others, such as India and the United States, a separate attestation or authentication is issued for documents going to the UAE. Either way, the UAE Embassy and MOFA steps are still needed.

🌍 How does birth certificate attestation differ by country?

The first half of the chain depends on the issuing country. The usual routes for the countries we see most often:

Issued inHome-country steps (usual)Then
IndiaState attestation (Home or General Administration Department, or the SDM in some states), then the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)UAE Embassy New Delhi or a UAE consulate, then MOFA
PakistanUnion council / NADRA certificate, then the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of PakistanUAE Embassy Islamabad or Consulate Karachi, then MOFA
PhilippinesPSA birth certificate, then the DFA apostilleUAE Embassy Manila, then MOFA
United KingdomCertified copy from the General Register Office, then FCDO legalisation (apostille)UAE Embassy London, then MOFA
United StatesCertified copy, Secretary of State of the issuing state, then the US Department of State authenticationUAE Embassy Washington, then MOFA
Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, SyriaCivil registry, then the foreign ministryUAE Embassy in that country, then MOFA

Routes change, and each UAE mission sets its own procedure. Treat this table as a guide and confirm the route for your country before you send the original.

Can I attest a birth certificate while I am in the UAE?

Yes, but not by yourself in one place. The home-country and UAE Embassy steps happen in the issuing country, so you either send the original to a relative there, use your own country's embassy in the UAE where it offers the service, or hand it to an attestation service that couriers it through every office. Only the MOFA step is done in the UAE.

👶 My child was born in the UAE — does the birth certificate need attestation?

A UAE birth certificate does not need a UAE Embassy step, because it is not a foreign document. For use in the UAE, the issuing health authority (MOHAP, or DHA in Dubai and DOH in Abu Dhabi) and MOFA attest it, and new digital birth certificates from MOHAP are attested digitally within minutes of approval. For use abroad — for example to register the child or get a passport from your home country — MOFA's digital service adds the attestation of the UAE Embassy in the destination country: AED 300 in total (AED 150 MOFA + AED 150 embassy). Your home country's embassy may then attest it too.

What about the 120-day newborn deadline?

Expatriate parents have 120 days from the birth to arrange the baby's documents and residence visa. Book the birth certificate, the passport and the attestation early — our birth certificate in Dubai guide and the newborn visa service show the full sequence.

🔤 Does the birth certificate need an Arabic translation?

Only if it is not already in Arabic or English, or if the authority asks for it. MOFA attests documents in Arabic or English, or with an official translation. For the visa file, a certificate in another language (Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, Russian, French…) needs a legal Arabic translation by a UAE-certified translator. Translate the attested certificate, including the stamps, so the translation matches the final document. See our legal translation service.

💰 How much does birth certificate attestation cost?

The total is the sum of every office in the chain. Only the MOFA part is fixed: AED 150 per birth certificate. The home-country and UAE Embassy fees are set in that country and paid in its currency.

⏳ How long does birth certificate attestation take?

From about 2 weeks to 3 months in total, depending on the country: how many home-country steps there are, how busy the UAE Embassy is and the courier time. The MOFA step itself is quick once the document is in the UAE — usually a few working days including courier. Start the attestation before the visa application, not after.

🚫 Why are birth certificates rejected for a UAE visa?

✕Missing stamp in the chain. MOFA will not attest a certificate without the UAE Embassy stamp, and the embassy will not attest it without the foreign ministry.
✕Apostille only. An apostilled certificate without the UAE Embassy and MOFA steps is not accepted.
✕Name mismatch. The parent's name on the certificate differs from the passport (spelling, missing surname). Fix the record or get an affidavit before attesting.
✕Hospital notice instead of the registered certificate. Only the official civil-registry certificate is attested.
✕Laminated or damaged original. MOFA does not accept laminated documents.
✕No translation. A certificate in a third language without a legal Arabic translation.

How can I check that my attestation is genuine?

Digitally attested documents can be verified through UAE PASS with the "Document Verification" option, and MOFA lists a verification service on its website. Keep the MOFA receipt with the reference number.

❓ Frequently asked questions

1. What is birth certificate attestation for the UAE?

It is the chain of stamps that makes a foreign birth certificate valid in the UAE: the authorities of the issuing country (usually ending with its foreign ministry), then the UAE Embassy in that country, then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).

2. Why do I need an attested birth certificate for a family visa?

GDRFA Dubai and ICP ask for a duly attested birth certificate to prove the relationship between the sponsor and the child, or between the sponsor and his or her parents.

3. How much does MOFA charge to attest a birth certificate?

AED 150 per birth certificate, according to MOFA's FAQs. The UAE Embassy and home-country fees come on top and vary by country.

4. Is an apostille enough for a birth certificate in the UAE?

No. The UAE is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the UAE Embassy and MOFA attestations are still needed. In some countries the apostille counts as the foreign-ministry step.

5. How long does birth certificate attestation take?

From about 2 weeks to 3 months in total, depending on the issuing country, the UAE Embassy and the courier. The MOFA step in the UAE usually takes a few working days.

6. Does an attested birth certificate expire?

No. The certificate and its attestation do not expire, so the same attested certificate can be used for renewals. A newly issued or corrected certificate needs a new attestation.

7. Can I do the MOFA attestation online?

Yes. Apply on the MOFA website or app with UAE PASS, upload the document, pay AED 150 and choose courier collection. Normal courier delivery inside the UAE costs AED 40 and takes about 3 working days.

8. Do I need my own birth certificate attested to sponsor my parents?

Yes. Your own birth certificate shows your parents' names and proves the relationship, so it must be attested for a parents visa.

9. Do I need my birth certificate attested for a spouse visa?

Usually not. A spouse visa relies on the attested marriage certificate. Your own birth certificate is needed for a parents visa.

10. My child was born in the UAE. Does the birth certificate need UAE Embassy attestation?

No. A UAE birth certificate is not a foreign document. It is attested by the health authority and MOFA for use in the UAE; for use abroad, MOFA's digital service adds the UAE Embassy in the destination country for AED 300 in total.

11. How much does it cost to attest a UAE birth certificate for use abroad?

AED 300 through MOFA's digital attestation for MOHAP birth certificates: AED 150 for MOFA and AED 150 for the UAE Embassy in the destination country. That country's embassy may charge its own fee.

12. Does the birth certificate need to be translated into Arabic?

Only if it is not already in Arabic or English, or if the authority asks for it. Then use a legal Arabic translation by a UAE-certified translator, made from the attested certificate.

13. What is the attestation process for an Indian birth certificate?

Usually state attestation first, then the Ministry of External Affairs, then the UAE Embassy in New Delhi or a UAE consulate, and finally MOFA in the UAE.

14. What is the attestation process for a Pakistani birth certificate?

Usually the NADRA or union council certificate is attested by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then by the UAE Embassy in Islamabad or the Consulate in Karachi, and finally by MOFA.

15. What is the attestation process for a Philippine birth certificate?

The PSA birth certificate gets the DFA apostille, then the UAE Embassy in Manila attests it, and MOFA finishes it in the UAE.

16. Can the UAE Embassy do the MOFA attestation at the same time?

At many UAE missions, yes: one application covers the embassy and MOFA attestations. You still pay both fees, but you save the courier to the UAE and time.

17. Why was my birth certificate rejected?

The most common reasons are a missing stamp in the chain, an apostille without the UAE Embassy and MOFA steps, a name that does not match the passport, a hospital notice instead of the registered certificate, a laminated original, or no translation.

18. Is birth certificate attestation different in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

No. MOFA is federal, so the chain and the MOFA fee are the same in every emirate. Only the visa authority differs: GDRFA in Dubai, ICP in the other emirates.

19. What happens if MOFA rejects my application?

MOFA refunds a rejected application automatically within 14 days. Delivery fees are not refunded.

20. How long do I have to get documents for a baby born in the UAE?

Expatriate parents have 120 days from the birth to arrange the baby's documents and residence visa, so start the birth certificate, passport and attestation early.
