Marriage Certificate Attestation for a UAE Family Visa 2026: Steps, Required Documents, Cost, Arabic Translation and Timelines by Country (India, Pakistan, Philippines, UK)

Marriage certificate attestation is the chain of stamps that makes a marriage certificate issued abroad valid in the UAE: first in the country where you married, then by the UAE Embassy in that country, and finally by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which charges AED 150 per document. Without it you cannot sponsor a wife or husband, and the children's visas usually stop too. This guide covers when it is needed, the steps from abroad and from inside the UAE, the Arabic translation, the cost and the timelines by country.

📌 THE SHORT ANSWER
Home country → UAE Embassy → MOFA. An apostille alone is not accepted.
Get a government-issued marriage certificate, have it attested in the country of issue (civil registry or notary, then the foreign ministry), then by the UAE Embassy there, then by MOFA in the UAE (AED 150). Add a legal Arabic translation if it is not in Arabic or English. It takes about 2 weeks to 3 months depending on the country. A marriage registered in the UAE needs no embassy step.

🖋️ What is marriage certificate attestation?

It is a legal confirmation, office by office, that your certificate and the signatures on it are genuine. Each office checks the stamp of the office before it, so the order never changes: the country that issued the certificate, the UAE mission in that country, then MOFA. Once MOFA has attested it, GDRFA Dubai, ICP and the UAE courts accept the certificate.

📌 When is marriage certificate attestation needed?

✓Spouse visa — a husband sponsoring his wife or a wife sponsoring her husband. See our spouse visa guide.
✓Children's visas — the parents' attested marriage certificate is usually asked together with the birth certificates.
✓Registering a baby born in the UAE — the hospital and health authority ask for it for the birth certificate.
✓Family of a Golden Visa holder, and court matters such as wills or divorce.
✕Your own visa (employment or visit) does not need it.

The full list per family member is in our family visa documents checklist.

Do I need attestation if I married in the UAE?

No embassy step is needed. A marriage certificate issued by a UAE court is a UAE document: it is accepted in the UAE, and MOFA attests it directly if an authority asks for it — for example to use it abroad.

How to attest a marriage certificate for the UAE: three stamps, always in this order.
1
Get the right certificate PREPARE
A certificate from the government registrar (civil registry, municipality, court) — not only the religious certificate — with both names as in your passports.
2
Attest it in the country of issue PREPARE
Notary, state or registry attestation where the country requires it, then that country's foreign ministry.
3
UAE Embassy or Consulate UAE EMBASSY
The UAE mission in the same country attests the foreign ministry's stamp. Many missions now take one application for both their own and the MOFA attestation.
4
MOFA in the UAE IMMIGRATION
Apply on the MOFA website or app with UAE PASS, pay AED 150 and send the original by courier — unless the embassy already added MOFA's attestation.
5
Arabic translation DONE
If the certificate is not in Arabic or English, a licensed legal translator in the UAE translates the attested certificate.

Can the UAE Embassy do the MOFA attestation as well?

Yes, at many UAE embassies and consulates. One application covers both stamps, so the certificate needs no separate MOFA step in the UAE. The fees are not lower — you still pay the embassy fee and the MOFA fee — but you save the courier and time. Our MOFA attestation guide explains the combined route.

🏙️ How to attest marriage certificate in UAE if I am already here?

The home-country and embassy steps still happen in the country of issue, so you have three options:

👪
Family back home
A relative takes the original to the registry, foreign ministry and UAE Embassy, then couriers it to you for MOFA.
✈️
During a trip home
Do the home-country and embassy steps yourself; finish MOFA online when you are back.
🤝
An attestation service
You hand over the original in the UAE; the service handles both countries and returns it attested.

If the embassy stamp is already done, the MOFA step is simple: log in with UAE PASS, apply, pay AED 150, and hand the original to MOFA's courier (normal delivery AED 40, about 3 working days). Someone else can apply for you.

Is marriage certificate attestation in Dubai different from Abu Dhabi?

No. MOFA is a federal ministry, so the steps and the fee are the same for marriage certificate attestation in Dubai, marriage certificate attestation in Abu Dhabi and every other emirate. Only the visa authority differs: GDRFA in Dubai, ICP elsewhere.

📂 What are the requirements for marriage certificate attestation in Dubai?

1
The original marriage certificate, issued by a government authority — not laminated (MOFA does not attest laminated documents).
2
Passport copies of both spouses, with names spelled exactly as on the certificate.
3
The home-country attestations in the right order, then the UAE Embassy stamp.
4
A UAE PASS account for the MOFA application (or someone applying for you).
5
An Arabic translation if the certificate is not in Arabic or English.

What if the names do not match the passports?

Correct the certificate before you start. A corrected or reissued certificate is a new document and needs every attestation again, so a mismatch found after MOFA costs you the whole chain.

🌐 Does the marriage certificate need Arabic translation?

Only if it is not in Arabic or English. MOFA accepts documents in Arabic or English, or with an official translation. Have the translation done in the UAE by a legal translator licensed by the Ministry of Justice, and translate the certificate after attestation, so the stamps are translated too. Our legal translation service does this for family visas.

Is an apostille enough for the UAE?

No. The UAE is not part of the Hague Apostille Convention. In some countries the foreign ministry's stamp is an apostille (for example the UK or the Philippines); the UAE Embassy and MOFA steps are still required after it.

💳 How much does marriage certificate attestation cost?

The total is the sum of every office in the chain. Only the MOFA fee is the same for everyone:

Marriage certificate attestation cost and time: AED 150 MOFA fee per document, a UAE Embassy fee in local currency, home-country fees, and about 2 weeks to 3 months in total depending on the country
Marriage certificate attestation cost: AED 150 at MOFA plus embassy and home-country fees; 2 weeks to 3 months.

🌍 What are the steps and timelines by country?

The UAE side never changes; the home-country side does. The most common countries for UAE family visas:

Marriage certificate attestation by country (October 2026)
CountryHome-country stepsThen
IndiaState attestation (Home Department or SDM), then MEAUAE Embassy New Delhi or Consulate Mumbai → MOFA
PakistanRegistered marriage certificate (NADRA), then Pakistan MOFAUAE Embassy Islamabad or Consulate Karachi → MOFA

Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, NepalRegistry copy, then the foreign ministryUAE Embassy in that country → MOFA
Arab countriesRegistry or court, then the foreign ministryUAE Embassy → MOFA; usually no translation (Arabic)

How long does marriage certificate attestation take?

From about 2 weeks for some countries to 3 months for others. The home-country steps take the longest; the MOFA step itself is quick once the embassy stamp is on the certificate. Start before you apply for the visa — attestation is part of your documents, not of the visa process.

What about marriage certificate attestation in India from Kerala?

For a Kerala marriage certificate attestation for UAE, the state step is done through the Kerala government (Norka Roots helps with certificate authentication), then MEA, the UAE Embassy and MOFA. Other states follow the same chain through their own Home Department.

What about marriage certificate attestation in Pakistan?

A handwritten Nikah Nama alone is usually not enough: get the computerised marriage registration certificate from NADRA, have it attested by Pakistan's foreign ministry, then by the UAE mission and MOFA.

🚫 What are the most common marriage certificate attestation mistakes?

✕Only a religious certificate. Register the marriage with the civil authority and attest that certificate.
✕Wrong order. The UAE Embassy will not stamp a certificate the foreign ministry has not attested.
✕The wrong UAE mission. Use the UAE Embassy or Consulate in the country that issued the certificate.
✕Names that differ from the passports. Fix the certificate first — every attestation is repeated after a correction.
✕Laminated originals are refused. Get a new certified copy.
✕Translating too early. Translate after attestation so the stamps are included.
