Emirates ID — frequently asked questions
How much does an Emirates ID cost?
AED 100 per year of validity plus a service fee — about AED 170 for 1 year, AED 270 for 2 years and AED 370 for 3 years. Applying online costs AED 40 in service fees versus AED 70 at a typing centre.
Will a found lost Emirates ID still work after the replacement?
No. Once the duplicate is issued, the old card is deactivated in the system — if it physically turns up later, card readers (delivery agents, du or Etisalat machines, any Emirates ID verification device) will show it as not active. Always carry the new card; the old one is just plastic.
Does a replacement Emirates ID change the issue or expiry date?
The issue date changes — the duplicate card is printed with a new issue date (the date it was issued, not your visa issue date). The expiry date does not change: the replacement keeps the same validity as the lost card, because it's a reissue, not a renewal.
Can I update my photo or signature when replacing my Emirates ID?
Yes. A new photo can be uploaded during the replacement application with no visit needed. Updating your signature requires an in-person visit to a centre, like your original biometrics — if you keep the existing signature, the whole process stays online.
Is the lost Emirates ID replacement fee the same for all card validities?
Yes — replacing a lost card is a flat AED 456 (about AED 486 through a centre) whether your Emirates ID is valid for 1, 2, 5 or 10 years (Golden Visa). Per-year pricing only applies to newly issued cards: AED 156 fixed plus AED 100 per year of validity.
How much does a new Emirates ID cost per year of validity?
A new Emirates ID costs AED 156 in fixed fees plus AED 100 per year — AED 256 for 1 year, AED 356 for 2 years, AED 656 for 5 years and AED 1,156 for a 10-year Golden Visa card.
What's the fine for an expired Emirates ID?
AED 20 per day of delay, capped at AED 1,000 — so renew before the card expires. For residents the ID is tied to the visa, so we always process the two renewals together.
How long does it take to get the card?
Typically about 48 hours after biometrics for standard applications, plus delivery time. The Fawri urgent service issues it within 24 hours for an extra AED 150.
I lost my Emirates ID — what now?
Report it and apply for a replacement: AED 300 plus the service fee, with the new card normally ready within 48 hours — or 24 hours with Fawri. We can file it for you the same day.
How do I renew my Emirates ID?
Through the ICP app or website, a typing centre, or through us. A resident's Emirates ID renews together with the residence visa, so we handle both in one go and the dates always match.
Is the Emirates ID my visa now?
Effectively yes — since 2022 no residence visa sticker is placed in passports; your Emirates ID carries your residency details, and the digital visa can be shown through the ICP and UAE Pass apps.
Do children need an Emirates ID?
Yes, residents of every age need one, including newborns. Fingerprint biometrics start only at age 15, so younger children don't need to attend in person.

Yes, same-day delivery costs AED 100, paid directly to the delivery partner after the card is printed. It is a delivery upgrade only and does not speed up ICP approval or printing.
Can I change the photo on my Emirates ID?
Yes. You can update your Emirates ID photo at any time while the card is valid. The photo can't be edited on the card you already have, so ICP issues a new card with your new photo through the replacement application, where you choose the photo update option.

Log in to the ICP website or the UAEICP app with UAE Pass, start the Emirates ID replacement application and choose the photo update option. Upload your new photo with your passport and visa copy, add a UAE delivery address and pay AED 456. The new card is delivered in about 2–3 working days.

A recent, good-quality digital colour photo that meets the ICAO standard: a plain white background with good contrast, your full face visible with the head straight, a neutral expression and eyes open, and no editing. Glasses are fine without glare; filters, retouching and coloured contact lenses are not accepted. A head covering is allowed for religious reasons or national dress.
What size should the Emirates ID photo be?
There is no fixed size any more. The photo is uploaded digitally with the application — it is not printed and pasted on a form as in the past — so what matters is the quality: a clear, high-resolution colour photo with a white background, your full face visible and no editing, following the ICAO photo standard.
Does the Emirates ID photo have to meet ICAO standards?

No. ICP's renewal service asks for a recent photo that is different from the one on your current card, so a renewed card always comes with an updated photo.
How do I check my Emirates ID fine online?
Use one of the two official portals. On ICP Smart Services (smartservices.icp.gov.ae), open Public Services, then Fines Inquiry, search by Emirates ID number, choose Residency or Visa, enter your nationality, date of birth and gender, complete the verification and click Search. ICP works for visas from every emirate. If your visa was issued in Dubai, you can also use GDRFA Dubai's Fines Inquiry on gdrfad.gov.ae. The Emirates ID late renewal fine itself is shown on your renewal application before you pay.

How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?
AED 50 per day once your grace period ends. ICP applies the same AED 50 daily fine to an expired or cancelled residence permit, an expired entry visa such as a visit visa, an exit permit and late newborn registration. Visit and tourist visas have no grace period, so their fine starts the day after the visa expires.
Can I get my Emirates ID fine waived?
Only if your case fits ICP's approved exemption decisions, for example if you left the UAE before your card expired and stayed abroad for more than three months, if it expired after a deportation order, or if your passport was held in a court case. You apply through ICP's Request for Exemption from Delay Fees together with your renewal application, upload your proof, and ICP accepts or rejects the request.
Do I pay both fines if my residence visa and Emirates ID expired together?
Both can apply, because they are separate fines with separate rules: the Emirates ID delay fine is AED 20 a day after 30 days, up to AED 1,000, and the residence overstay fine is AED 50 a day after your grace period, with no maximum stated by ICP. If your visa is cancelled, your Emirates ID is cancelled with it, and only the overstay rules apply once your grace period ends.
