What is the Emirates ID?

The Emirates ID is the mandatory identity card issued by the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) to every UAE citizen and resident. It's far more than an ID — daily life in the UAE runs on it.

Mandatory for everyone

Every citizen and resident — including newborns — must hold a valid Emirates ID at all times. It doubles as your residency proof.

Tied to your visa

For residents, the card's validity always matches your residence visa — 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years. Renew the visa, renew the ID.

Biometric smart card

The chip stores your fingerprints, photo and signature — used for UAE Pass, smart gates at airports and secure e-signatures.

Needed everywhere

Bank accounts, SIM cards, tenancy (Ejari), DEWA, medical care, insurance, school enrolment — nothing opens without it.

How to get an Emirates ID, step by step.

Whether it's your first card or a renewal, the ICP process is the same five stages. We handle every one of them for you, 100% online.

Emirates ID FAQ

How long does it take to get an Emirates ID?
Typically 3–5 working days from application to delivery, and the card is usually printed within 24–48 hours after biometrics. With the urgent Fawri service (AED 150 extra) the card is issued within 24 hours at ICP main centers.
How do I check my Emirates ID status?
Application status is checked free of charge on the official ICP website or ICP UAE app using your application number (PRAN) — no service provider is needed for this step.
What happens if my Emirates ID expires?
You have a 30-day grace period to renew after expiry. After that, ICP charges a late fine of AED 20 per day, capped at AED 1,000.
Is the Emirates ID validity the same as my visa?
Yes — for residents the card is always issued to match your residence visa duration (1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years). Citizens and GCC nationals can get 5- or 10-year cards.
Do children and newborns need an Emirates ID?
Yes, every resident of any age must have one. Children under 15 don't give fingerprints — only a photo is needed, so there's no biometrics appointment.
Can you process my Emirates ID while I'm outside the UAE?
The application and payment can be prepared online, but first-time applicants must be inside the UAE for biometrics, and the card is delivered inside the UAE. Renewals without biometrics can often be completed while you travel.
