The renewal rules, in plain English.

Three things decide whether your renewal is routine or expensive: the grace period, your visa status and the fine clock.

30-day grace period

ICP gives you 30 days from the card's expiry date to file the renewal. Inside this window there is no penalty at all.

AED 20/day fine after that

From day 31, the fine ticks at AED 20 per day and caps at AED 1,000. It must be paid before any new application goes through.

Visa first, then card

A resident's card can't outlive the visa. If your visa is also expiring, the visa renewal is processed first — we handle both together.

Usually no biometrics

Renewals normally reuse your existing fingerprints. ICP only asks for new biometrics occasionally (e.g. photo update needed) — we'll tell you upfront.

Renewal, step by step.

What we need and what happens — most renewals are card-in-hand within 3–5 working days.

Emirates ID renewal FAQ

When can I renew my Emirates ID?
ICP expects renewal after the card expires, within the 30-day grace period. You'll typically get SMS reminders from ICP as expiry approaches. Renewal before expiry is generally not filed — the window opens at expiry.
What is the fine for late renewal?
AED 20 per day, starting after the 30-day grace period, capped at AED 1,000. The fine must be settled before the renewal is processed.
Do I need new fingerprints to renew?
Usually not — most renewals reuse your existing biometrics and the card goes straight to printing. ICP occasionally requests updated biometrics or a new photo; we flag this before you pay.
Can I renew my Emirates ID if my visa has expired?
The visa comes first. Your new card's validity is tied to your residence visa, so an expired visa must be renewed before or together with the Emirates ID. We process both in one flow.
How long does renewal take?
Most renewals are approved and printed within 24–48 hours and delivered within 3–5 working days. The Fawri urgent service (AED 150) issues the card within 24 hours at ICP main centers.
Can I be exempted from the late fine?
ICP grants exemptions in specific cases — for example if you were outside the UAE for more than 3 months when the card expired, or for documented humanitarian reasons. We can check your case before you pay.
