How to Sponsor Stepchildren or Adopted Children in the UAE: Eligibility, Custody and Consent Papers, Attestation, the 1-Year Visa and Real Cases
Can you sponsor stepchildren or an adopted child in the UAE? Yes, in many cases — but only as a special case. The normal family visa covers your own wife or husband and children. Stepchildren, adopted children and children under your guardianship are approved case by case by GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates, need far more documents — custody papers, the other parent's consent, attestation and Arabic translation — and receive a 1-year visa renewed every year. This guide explains who is eligible, which papers you need and the most common reasons for refusal.

👨👩👧 Can I sponsor my stepchildren in the UAE?
The standard family visa covers a spouse, sons up to 25, unmarried daughters and children with special needs — your own children. A stepchild is your spouse's child from a previous relationship, so it falls outside the standard list. GDRFA or ICP can still approve it as a special case, when the file shows the child depends on you and nobody objects.
| Child | Route | Visa length |
|---|---|---|
| Your own son or daughter | Standard family visa | 2 years |
| Stepchild (spouse's child) | Special case, custody + consent | 1 year, renewed yearly |
| Adopted child | Special case, final adoption decree | 1 year, renewed yearly |
| Child under your guardianship | Special case, court guardianship order | 1 year, renewed yearly |
What makes approval more likely?
💞 Can I sponsor an adopted child in the UAE?
Possibly, as a special case. Adoption in the sense of changing a child's legal parentage is not part of UAE family law for Muslims. For expatriates who adopted a child abroad, the key document is a final adoption decree from a court in the country where the adoption took place, attested and translated into Arabic. The authority then reviews the case individually.
Which papers prove an adoption?
🤔 Should the parent or the step-parent sponsor the child?
If the child's own parent — your spouse — has a UAE residence and earns AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, that parent sponsoring the child is usually simpler. It is a standard family visa for 2 years, not a special case. A woman can sponsor her own children.
| Child's own parent sponsors | Step-parent sponsors | |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Standard family visa | Special case |
| Visa length | 2 years | 1 year |
| Custody + consent | Often still needed after a divorce | Always needed |
| Approval | Normal processing | Special approval, case by case |
What if my spouse does not work?
Then the step-parent sponsoring is the main route, as a special case. Prepare a strong file: salary, housing, custody, consent and proof the child lives with you.
📂 What documents are needed to sponsor a stepchild?

Our family visa documents checklist covers the standard papers.
✍️ Do I need the other parent's consent?
Usually yes. The child's other parent keeps rights even after a divorce. A signed and attested no-objection letter, stating that he or she agrees to the child living in the UAE under your sponsorship, is the document most often asked for.
What if the other parent refuses or cannot be found?
Then a court order giving your spouse sole custody, or permission to relocate with the child, is needed. If the other parent has died, the death certificate replaces the consent. Without consent or a court order, a refusal is likely.
Does custody have to be decided by a court?
Not always. A divorce decree that names the custodian can be enough. Some countries issue a custody certificate from a local authority. The UAE authority decides whether the document is sufficient.
🔏 Do custody and adoption papers need attestation?
Yes. Every document issued outside the UAE is attested in the home country, by the UAE embassy there and by MOFA in the UAE, then translated into Arabic by a legal translator. See our MOFA attestation guide, the birth certificate attestation guide and our legal translation service.
🔢 How do I apply for a stepchild or adopted child visa?
How long does approval take?
Longer than a normal family visa, because a special case goes for approval. A complete file is the fastest file.
📅 How long is the visa, and what salary is needed?

Stepchildren and other special cases receive a 1-year visa, renewed every year with updated documents. The basic salary rule is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation in the MOHRE salary certificate; for special cases the authority looks at the whole file and may expect more. A refundable deposit may be asked. Our minimum salary guide has the details.
What happens if the visa is cancelled?
The child has 59 days to get a new visa or leave; after that the fine is AED 50 a day.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. Can I sponsor my stepchildren in the UAE?
Yes, in many cases, but only as a special case. GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates approves stepchildren case by case, with custody papers, the other parent's consent and attested documents. The visa is issued for 1 year.
2. Can I sponsor an adopted child in the UAE?
Possibly, as a special case. You need a final adoption decree from a court, attested and translated into Arabic, and the authority decides. Adoption is not recognised under UAE family law for Muslims, so each case is reviewed individually.
3. Is a stepchild visa the same as a normal family visa?
No. Your own sons and daughters get a standard 2-year family visa. Stepchildren and other special cases get a 1-year visa, renewed every year, after special approval.
4. What is the salary requirement to sponsor a stepchild?
The basic family visa rule is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation in the MOHRE salary certificate. For special cases the authority may expect more and looks at the whole file.
5. Do I need the biological father's consent to sponsor my stepchild?
Usually yes. A no-objection letter from the child's other parent, attested, is normally asked for. If that parent has died, a death certificate replaces it. A court order giving sole custody can also be accepted.
6. Can my wife sponsor her own children from a previous marriage instead?
Yes, if she has a UAE residence and meets the salary rule. A mother sponsoring her own children is a normal family visa, often simpler than a stepfather's special case.
7. What documents are needed for a stepchild visa?
The marriage certificate between you and the child's parent, the child's birth certificate, the custody order, the other parent's consent or death certificate, your salary certificate, residence, Emirates ID, tenancy contract outside Dubai, passports and photos. Foreign documents must be attested and translated.
8. Do custody documents need attestation?
Yes. A custody order or adoption decree issued abroad is attested in the home country, by the UAE embassy there and by MOFA in the UAE, then translated into Arabic.
9. How long is a stepchild visa valid?
1 year. It is renewed every year with updated documents.
10. Is a deposit required for a stepchild visa?
A refundable deposit may be asked for special cases. The amount is the one shown in the system or set by the authority when the case is approved.
11. Until what age can I sponsor a stepson?
The normal age rules are a starting point: sons up to 25 and daughters while unmarried. For stepchildren the authority decides each case, and an adult stepson usually needs his own visa.
12. Can a stepmother sponsor her husband's children?
It is possible as a special case, but usually the father sponsors his own children. A stepmother sponsoring is reviewed case by case.
13. Can I sponsor a child I am a legal guardian of?
Possibly, as a special case, with a court guardianship order showing there is no other guardian able to care for the child. Ask us before collecting documents.
14. Does the stepchild need a medical test?
Only from age 18. Children under 18 do not need the medical fitness test, but they need health insurance and Emirates ID biometrics.
15. How long does approval take for a stepchild visa?
Longer than a normal family visa, because the file goes for special approval. The timeline depends on GDRFA or ICP and on how complete the documents are.
16. Can the stepchild come on a visit visa first?
Yes. Many families bring the child on a visit visa and apply for the residence as a change of status inside the UAE once approved.
17. What happens to the stepchild's visa if I divorce the child's mother?
The basis for the sponsorship ends. You cancel the visa and the child has 59 days to move to the mother's sponsorship or leave.
18. Is a tenancy contract required?
In Dubai a tenancy contract is not required for wife and children; in the other emirates it is. For special cases the authority may still ask for proof of suitable housing.
19. Can a stepchild get a Golden Visa through me?
Golden Visa holders can sponsor their family, but stepchildren still need the custody and consent documents and are decided case by case.
20. What if the other parent refuses consent?
Then you normally need a court order giving custody to the child's parent who is your spouse. Without consent or a court order the application is likely to be rejected.
21. Can FamilyVisa.ae check my stepchild or adopted child case?
Yes. Send us the documents you have and we tell you what is missing, arrange attestation and translation and submit the special case application.
