Family Visa Rejection in the UAE: 12 Common Reasons a Family Residence Visa Is Rejected, How to Fix Each One and How to Reapply in 2026
A family visa rejection in the UAE is almost always caused by one specific, fixable problem: a salary below AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 plus accommodation) or not shown correctly, an unattested marriage or birth certificate, names that do not match, a missing tenancy contract, an old visa that was never cancelled or an unpaid fine. GDRFA in Dubai and ICP in the other emirates decide every application. This guide lists the common family visa rejection reasons, tells you how to read the rejection note, and explains how to fix the cause and reapply without repeating the same mistake.

❌ Why do UAE family visa applications get rejected?
The system compares your file with official records — MOHRE salary, passports, attested certificates and, outside Dubai, the tenancy. When something is missing or does not match, it is returned or rejected. Most rejections are about paperwork.
🔍 How do I find out why my family visa was rejected?
You can also check the status from our visa status page. Send us a screenshot of the note on WhatsApp and we tell you what it means.
📋 What are the 12 most common family visa rejection reasons?

| # | Reason | How to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Salary below the rule | AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 + accommodation; spouses may combine salaries (authority decides) |
| 2 | Accommodation not written in the MOHRE salary certificate | Ask the employer for a new MOHRE salary certificate that states the housing |
| 3 | Salary certificate does not match the official record | Use the MOHRE salary (total); update the contract if it changed |
| 4 | Unattested marriage or birth certificate | Home country → UAE embassy → MOFA, plus Arabic translation where needed |
| 5 | Names or dates do not match | Correct the document, or add an official name correction or affidavit |
| 6 | No tenancy contract (outside Dubai) | Register the tenancy; in Dubai it is not needed for wife and children |
| 7 | Son over 25 / married daughter | Son needs his own visa; a married daughter moves to her husband |
| 8 | Parents without the right conditions | AED 10,000 salary, AED 5,000 refundable deposit, two-bedroom home |
| 9 | Old visa not cancelled | Cancel the previous residence or visit visa first |
| 10 | Unpaid fines or an open case | Settle overstay fines (AED 50 a day) and close the case |
| 11 | Medical test result: unfit | Decided by the health authority; ask us before reapplying |
| 12 | Passport or photo problem | Renew a passport close to expiry; use a new photo with a white background |
Was the family visa rejected because of your salary?
This is the most common reason. The rule is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation — and the accommodation must be written in the MOHRE salary certificate itself, not in a separate letter. The rule is the same in every emirate, for any job title and any family size. The authority looks at the MOHRE salary (total). Full detail in our minimum salary for a family visa guide and our salary certificate guide.
Can husband and wife combine salaries after a rejection?
Below AED 4,000, an exception is possible by combining the husband's and wife's salaries (spouses only). It is not automatic: GDRFA or ICP decides. Partners and investors qualify through the company MOA, with their own share above AED 75,000.
Were your marriage or birth certificates attested correctly?
A certificate issued outside the UAE needs the full chain: attestation in the home country, by the UAE embassy there and by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), plus a legal Arabic translation where needed. A missing stamp in the chain is enough for a rejection. See our marriage certificate attestation guide and our attestation service.
Do names and dates match in every document?
A name written “Mohammed” in the passport and “Mohamed” in the marriage certificate, a reversed first and last name, or a different date of birth can lead to a rejection. Fix the document at the source, or obtain an official name correction or affidavit, attested like the certificate. Compare every document with the passport before you apply.
Is the tenancy contract or Ejari the problem?
In Dubai, a tenancy contract is not needed for a wife or children. In the other emirates a tenancy contract is required, and it should be valid and in the sponsor's name. For parents, a two-bedroom (2BHK) home is needed everywhere. Read our Ejari for family visa guide.
Was the visa rejected because your son is over 25 or your daughter is married?
Sons can be sponsored up to 25; daughters at any age while unmarried; children with special needs without an age limit. A son over 25 needs his own residence. See our son visa guide. Brothers, sisters and in-laws are special cases — see can you sponsor your brother or sister.
Did the medical test come back unfit?
Family members aged 18 and over take a medical fitness test in the UAE. If the result is unfit because of certain infectious diseases, the residence can be refused. The rules are set by the health authorities and differ by condition. Check the result with our visa medical result guide, and ask us before you apply again.
Is an old visa, a fine or a ban blocking the new visa?
A previous residence or visit visa that is still open must be cancelled first. Unpaid overstay fines (AED 50 a day for all visas) also block a new visa. Check them with our visa fine check guide. A fine above AED 4,000 can be the subject of a waiver request, decided case by case.
What does a family visa rejection for “security reasons” mean?
It is a decision by the authority, and the reason is usually not explained. The sponsor can ask GDRFA or ICP whether a review is possible. Nobody can promise a result here — be careful with anyone who does.
🔁 Can I reapply after a family visa rejection?
Yes. Most family visa rejections can be fixed. Reapply only when the cause is fixed and you can show it in the new file.

How long should I wait before reapplying?
There is no fixed waiting period for most family visa rejections. You can reapply as soon as the problem is fixed — the same day, if it is only a missing document. A rejection for security reasons or a ban is different: ask the authority first.
💸 Do I get my money back if the family visa is rejected?
Sometimes partly. ICP has a refund of fees service for issuance fees when a service is not completed. Application, typing and smart-service fees are usually not refunded. The amount shown in the GDRFA or ICP system is the final reference. A refundable deposit (for example the parents' deposit) is returned according to the authority's procedure.
🛬 What if my family is already in the UAE when the visa is rejected?
| Family member's status | Time left | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cancelled family residence | 59 days grace period | Fix and reapply quickly, or leave before day 59 |
| Entry permit or visit visa | Until it expires — no grace period now | Reapply before expiry, or extend or leave |
| After the deadline | Overstay | AED 50 a day; leaving also needs an exit pass of about AED 450 |
Read more in our visa grace period guide and family entry permit guide.
🏢 DIY or Amer centre: which route avoids a rejection?
| Apply yourself (DIY) | Amer centre | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | GDRFA, ICP or UAE Pass online | Amer centre in Dubai (typing centres in other emirates) |
| File check | You check your own documents | Staff check the file before it is submitted |
| Decision | GDRFA or ICP | GDRFA or ICP |
Find an Amer centre near you. Either way, the decision belongs to the immigration authority.
🕰️ Old rules vs 2026: why do old websites cause rejections?
Many people are rejected because they followed an old page or an old AI answer. These are the rules that changed:
| Rule | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Linked to job titles | Salary only: AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 + accommodation in the MOHRE salary certificate |
| Sons | Up to 18 | Up to 25 |
| Parents | About AED 20,000 salary | AED 10,000 + AED 5,000 deposit + two-bedroom home |
| Tenancy in Dubai | Often asked for every family member | Not needed for wife and children in Dubai |
| Visit visa grace period | 10 days | No grace period — fines from the day after expiry |

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. Why was my UAE family visa rejected?
Usually because of one fixable problem: salary below AED 4,000 (or AED 3,000 plus accommodation), unattested certificates, names that do not match, a missing tenancy outside Dubai, an old visa or unpaid fines. The rejection note tells you which one.
2. How do I find out the reason for a family visa rejection?
Check the application on GDRFA (Dubai) or ICP (other emirates), or ask the centre that submitted it. The Arabic line of the rejection comment usually gives the exact reason.
3. Can I reapply after a family visa is rejected?
Yes. Most family visa rejections are about a fixable problem. Correct that problem, then submit a new application with the corrected documents.
4. How long do I have to wait to reapply for a family visa?
There is no fixed waiting period for most family visa rejections. You can reapply as soon as the cause is fixed. Do not resubmit the same file without a change, because it usually gets the same result.
5. Do I get a refund if my family visa is rejected?
Sometimes partly. ICP refunds issuance fees when a service is not completed. Application and typing fees are usually not refunded.
6. What is the minimum salary to avoid a family visa rejection?
AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate. The rule is the same in every emirate and for any family size. Parents need AED 10,000.
7. My salary is above AED 4,000 but the visa was rejected. Why?
Usually the official MOHRE salary differs from the certificate, or the accommodation is not written in the MOHRE salary certificate.
8. Can a husband and wife combine salaries to avoid rejection?
Below AED 4,000, an exception is possible by combining the husband's and wife's salaries. This applies to spouses only, and the authority decides each case.
9. Can unattested certificates cause a rejection?
Yes. Foreign marriage and birth certificates need attestation in the home country, by the UAE embassy and by MOFA, with an Arabic translation where needed.
10. Can a spelling mistake in a name cause a family visa rejection?
Yes. If a name or date of birth is spelled differently in the passport, the marriage certificate and the birth certificate, the authority may reject the file. Correct the document or add an official name correction or affidavit before reapplying.
11. Is a tenancy contract needed to avoid rejection?
In Dubai, a tenancy contract is not needed for a wife or children. In the other emirates a tenancy contract is required. For parents, a two-bedroom home is needed everywhere.
12. Why was my son's family visa rejected?
Sons can be sponsored up to 25. After 25 the family visa is usually rejected and he needs his own visa, for example an employment or student visa. A son with special needs has no age limit.
13. Why was my parents' visa rejected?
Parents need a salary of AED 10,000, an AED 5,000 refundable deposit and a two-bedroom home. A one-bedroom flat, a lower salary or missing proof of relationship are common reasons for rejection.
14. Can a medical test result cause a family visa rejection?
Yes. Family members aged 18 and over take a medical test in the UAE; an unfit result for certain infectious diseases can lead to refusal.
15. Can old fines or an uncancelled visa block a new family visa?
Yes. An old residence that was not cancelled, unpaid overstay fines (AED 50 a day) or an open case can stop a new visa. Cancel the old visa and settle the fines first.
16. What does a family visa rejection for security reasons mean?
It is a decision by the authority and the reason is usually not explained. The sponsor can ask GDRFA or ICP whether a review or an appeal is possible. We do not promise a result in these cases.
17. My wife is in the UAE and her visa was rejected. What now?
On a cancelled residence she has 59 days to get a new visa or leave. On an entry permit or visit visa, fines start after expiry. The overstay fine is AED 50 a day.
18. Can a woman's application for her husband be rejected more often?
A woman can sponsor her husband and children, but for a husband the authority may ask for more, such as extra documents. Check the case before applying.
19. Can I sponsor my brother or sister if my family visa was approved?
Siblings are not part of the normal family visa. They are special cases decided one by one, with many documents and a 1-year visa.
20. Does a family visa rejection affect future applications?
A rejection for a document or salary problem usually does not affect a later application once the problem is fixed. A rejection for security reasons or a ban is different and is decided by the authority.
Last reviewed 15 October 2026.
