💰 How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?

AED 50 for each day after the visa — or its grace period — ends. The same rate applies to visit visas and residence visas, in Dubai and in every other emirate. What changes from one visa to another is the grace period: the number of days you can still stay before the fine starts.

UAE overstay fines summarised: AED 50 a day for a visit or residence visa, AED 20 a day for a late Emirates ID up to AED 1,000, about AED 450 for an exit pass when leaving with a fine, and no grace period on a visit visa
What you pay: AED 50 a day overstay, AED 20 a day Emirates ID, and about AED 450 exit pass when leaving with a fine.

How is the overstay fine calculated?

Count the days from the visa's expiry or cancellation date to the day you leave or change status, take away the grace period, and multiply by AED 50. Example: a visit visa expired 12 days before departure → 12 × AED 50 = AED 600. A family visa cancelled 70 days ago → 70 − 59 = 11 days × AED 50 = AED 550.

What is the overstay fine in Dubai for a visit visa?

The same as in the rest of the UAE: AED 50 a day from the day after the visit visa expires, with no grace period. A visit visa holder who wants to stay longer should extend the visa or change status before the expiry date.

Is there an overstay fine after an employment visa cancellation?

Only after the grace period — usually 30 days for most employees. The family members on the employee's file follow their own cancellation date and their own 59 days. See our visa cancellation guide.

🕰️ Old rules vs current rules: what changed?

Many websites — and many AI answers — still show the old figures. If a page tells you that a visit visa has a 10-day grace period, it is out of date. Here is what changed:

UAE overstay rules: before and now (October 2026)
TopicBeforeNow
Visit visa grace period10 days (removed for Dubai visit visas in 2023)No grace period — the fine starts the day after expiry
Daily overstay fineDifferent amounts for visit and residence visas (older guides show AED 100 a day for visit visas)AED 50 a day for all visas
Residence grace period30 days for almost everyoneBy category: 59 days for family visas, usually 30 days for employees, up to 180 days for some skilled, Golden and Green Visa holders
AmnestyNationwide amnesty from September to December 2024; 2026 flight-disruption exemption with a final grace period until 9 July 2026No general amnesty active — normal fines apply
Large finesPaid in full or waited for an amnestyWaiver request to the immigration committee when the fine is above AED 4,000
💡
Quick rule for 2026: visit visa — fine from the next day; family visa — 59 days after cancellation; employee — usually 30 days; then AED 50 a day for everyone.

💻 How to check overstay fine in the UAE online?

There are three ways to do an overstay fine check — all use the same official data:

🏛️
1. ICP smart services (all emirates)
Open the fines inquiry on the ICP website or app and search with the passport number, nationality and the other details it asks for (for example the date of birth or file number).
🏙️
2. GDRFA Dubai (Dubai visas)
For visas issued in Dubai, the GDRFA fine check on the GDRFA website or app shows the fine on a Dubai file. An Amer centre can also check and print it.
📱
3. FamilyVisa.ae — we check it for you
Use the free fine checker or send the passport details on WhatsApp. We check both visa and Emirates ID fines and tell you the cheapest way to settle them.

Three ways to check a visa fine: ICP or GDRFA online, an Amer centre, or FamilyVisa.ae on WhatsApp.

What details do I need for a visa fine check?

The passport number, the nationality, the date of birth and the passport expiry date. The online systems may also ask for the Emirates ID number or the file (UID) number.

How to check overstay fine in Dubai for a cancelled visa?

Search with the same passport you used for the visa. A cancelled visa still shows the cancellation date, so the fine — if any — is counted from the end of the grace period. If the passport was renewed, give us the old passport number too.

Can I check the fine for my wife, child or parents?

Yes. The sponsor can check any family member's fine with that person's passport details — or send them to us on WhatsApp.

Checking for the whole family?

🪪 How much is the Emirates ID fine?

AED 20 a day when the Emirates ID is not renewed, starting 30 days after it expires, up to a maximum of AED 1,000. It is separate from the visa overstay fine. A cancelled residence has no Emirates ID fine — the card is cancelled with it. For the exemption request and the full rules, read our Emirates ID fine check guide.

✈️ Can I leave the UAE with an overstay fine? The exit pass

Yes — but you pay at the airport. A person with an overstay pays the full fine plus an exit pass (out pass) of about AED 450 before passing immigration. Example: 20 days overstay on a visit visa → AED 1,000 fine + about AED 450 exit pass = about AED 1,450.

⚠️
Check before the airport. Paying at the airport leaves no time to request a waiver or fix a mistake on the file. Check the fine a few days before the flight and settle it in advance.

Can I get a fine waiver if I leave the country?

A waiver request needs time for the committee to decide, so it fits people who stay and change status. If you are leaving, ask us before you book the flight — we tell you whether a waiver is worth filing first.

🔄 Can I stay in the UAE and get a new visa if I have a fine?

Yes. With a change of status — for example a new family visa under a husband or parent, or a new employment visa — the overstay fine is settled as part of the new visa process, and the waiver option is available when the fine is above AED 4,000. There is no exit pass, because you do not leave. See the family visa guide for the sponsorship steps.

🤝 UAE visa fine waiver: can my overstay fine be reduced?

Yes, in many cases. When the visa fine is above AED 4,000, a waiver (reduction) request can be filed with immigration — GDRFA in Dubai, ICP in the other emirates. A fines committee reviews each case and approves or rejects it based on the reasons and documents. When approved, the fine is reduced or cancelled; approval is never guaranteed.

What documents are needed for a fine waiver?

1
A copy of the passport of the person with the fine.
2
A letter explaining why the overstay happened and why the fine cannot be paid in full.
3
Supporting papers the committee asks for — for example medical reports, employer letters or travel records.

How to reduce overstay fine in Dubai?

File the waiver request through GDRFA (online, a customer happiness centre or an Amer centre) with a clear reason and the documents. A request that explains a real reason — illness, an employer who did not cancel or renew the visa, a family emergency — has the best chance. FamilyVisa.ae prepares the letter, files it and follows up.

💳 How to pay overstay fine in the UAE?

✓Online: ICP smart services or GDRFA Dubai, by card, after the fine check.
✓In person: an Amer centre in Dubai or an ICP-approved typing centre in the other emirates — find the nearest Amer centre.
iAt the airport: when leaving — the fine plus the exit pass of about AED 450.
iWith a new visa: the fine is settled during the change of status, with a waiver request if it is large.

🚫 What are the most common overstay mistakes?

✕Trusting the old 10-day rule. Visit visas have no grace period now — the fine starts the next day.
✕Counting 60 days after a family visa cancellation. The grace period is 59 days.
✕Waiting for an amnesty. None is active; the fine keeps adding up every day.
✕Paying a large fine at the airport. Above AED 4,000, a waiver request might have reduced it.
✕Forgetting the Emirates ID. An expired, unrenewed Emirates ID has its own fine, up to AED 1,000.

❓ Frequently asked questions

1. How do I check my visa fine in the UAE?

Use the fines inquiry on ICP smart services (all emirates) or GDRFA Dubai (Dubai visas) with your passport or file details, visit an Amer or typing centre, or send FamilyVisa.ae your passport number, nationality, date of birth and passport expiry date on WhatsApp and we check it for you.

2. How much is the overstay fine in the UAE per day?

AED 50 for each day after the visa or its grace period ends. The same daily rate applies to visit visas and residence visas.

3. Is there a grace period on a UAE visit or tourist visa?

No. The fine starts the day after the visit visa expires. Until 2023, Dubai visit visas had a 10-day grace period, and many older articles and AI answers still show it — it no longer applies.

4. What is the grace period after a family visa is cancelled?

59 days for a family (dependent) residence, counted from the date of cancellation. After that, AED 50 a day is charged.

5. What is the grace period after an employment visa is cancelled?

Usually 30 days for most employees. Some skilled categories get longer, up to 180 days, depending on the skill level. The fine of AED 50 a day starts after the grace period.

6. Is there a maximum overstay fine in the UAE?

No maximum is published for the visa overstay fine — it keeps adding AED 50 a day. Only the Emirates ID late fine has a cap, AED 1,000. A large visa fine can go to a waiver request.

7. How much is the Emirates ID fine?

AED 20 a day when the Emirates ID is not renewed, starting 30 days after expiry, up to a maximum of AED 1,000. A cancelled residence has no Emirates ID fine, because the card is cancelled with it.

8. Can my visa fine be waived or reduced?

It can be. When the visa fine is above AED 4,000, a waiver (reduction) request can be filed with immigration — GDRFA in Dubai, ICP in the other emirates. A fines committee approves or rejects each request case by case, based on the reasons and documents.

9. What documents are needed for a fine waiver request?

GDRFA Dubai lists a copy of the passport, a letter explaining why the fine happened and why it cannot be paid, and any other document the fines committee asks for, such as medical or employer papers.

10. Can I leave the UAE with an overstay fine?

Yes, but you pay at the airport: the full overstay fine plus an exit pass of about AED 450. It is cheaper and safer to check and settle the fine before you go.

11. What is an exit pass (out pass)?

A permit that lets a person with an overstay leave the UAE. When you leave with a fine, you pay the fine and about AED 450 for the exit pass, usually at the airport.

12. Can I stay in the UAE and get a new visa if I have a fine?

Yes. With a change of status — for example a new family visa or a new employment visa inside the country — the fine is settled as part of the new visa, and the waiver option is available if the fine is above AED 4,000.

13. Does the overstay fine stop when I apply for a new visa?

The fine is counted until the status changes or you leave. Applying early keeps it small; ask us to check the exact date the system uses.

14. Is the overstay fine calculator on this page exact?

It gives a close estimate from the dates you enter and the published daily rates. The amount shown in the ICP or GDRFA system is final — use the free fine check at the top of the page to get it.

15. Is there an amnesty for visa overstays now?

No general amnesty is active in October 2026. The last nationwide amnesty ran from September to December 2024, and the 2026 flight-disruption exemption ended with a final grace period on 9 July 2026.

16. How do I pay an overstay fine in the UAE?

Online on ICP smart services or GDRFA Dubai by card, at an Amer or typing centre, at the airport when leaving, or as part of a new visa application. FamilyVisa.ae can pay it for you after checking the amount.

17. Can I check a visit visa fine with only my passport number?

Online systems usually ask for more than the passport number — for example the nationality and the date of birth or file number. Send us the passport number, nationality, date of birth and passport expiry date and we check it for you.

18. Does a cancelled visa get an overstay fine?

Only if the person stays past the grace period. A family member has 59 days after cancellation; most employees have 30 days. After that, AED 50 a day applies.

19. Will an overstay fine stop me from coming back to the UAE?

An unpaid fine can block a new visa or entry until it is settled. Paying the fine, or settling it through a waiver, clears the way in most cases.

20. Is the overstay fine the same in Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Yes. The daily fine is set federally: AED 50 a day in every emirate. Dubai visas are checked on GDRFA, the other emirates on ICP.

21. Can a sponsor check the fine for a family member?

Yes. The sponsor can check a wife's, husband's, child's or parent's fine with their passport details, or send them to FamilyVisa.ae on WhatsApp.

22. How long does a visa fine waiver take?

It depends on the committee and the case. We file the request, follow up with immigration and tell you the result on WhatsApp.
