Emirates ID Fine Check (2026): How to Check Emirates ID and Visa Overstay Fines on ICP and GDRFA — Amounts, Grace Periods and Waivers

Doing an Emirates ID fine check before you renew, change status or travel saves you from surprises at the counter. Two official portals show the fines on your file: ICP (the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security), which works for visas issued in every emirate, and GDRFA Dubai, which covers visas issued in Dubai only. This guide shows both ways step by step with fresh screenshots, explains the two fines people mix up — the Emirates ID late renewal fine (AED 20 a day after 30 days, capped at AED 1,000) and the residence visa overstay fine (AED 50 a day after your grace period, with no maximum stated by ICP) — and walks you through the official ways to ask for an exemption, waiver or reduction.

🪪 What is an Emirates ID fine?

An Emirates ID fine is the administrative delay fine that ICP charges when you do not renew your ID card on time. ICP lists it as a fine for each day of delay after the permitted renewal period, AED 20 per day, not exceeding AED 1,000. The UAE government portal explains when it starts: the late fee applies when you renew more than one month after the card expired. So the first 30 days after expiry are free, and the fine starts from day 31.

The same AED 20-a-day rate, with the same AED 1,000 cap, also applies to two other ID card delays:

  • Late reporting of changes to your personal or civil data, if you don't update them within 30 days (listed on ICP's renewal service).
  • Late registration and issuance of an ID card (part of ICP's fine list, as reported in UAE media).

In everyday searches, "fine on my Emirates ID" often means something wider: any fine that shows up under your ID number. For residents, the most important one is the visa overstay fine on your residence file. ICP handles the ID card fine; ICP and, for Dubai visas, GDRFA handle the residence and visa fines. This guide covers both.

🚦
Looking for traffic or parking fines? Those are linked to your Emirates ID number too, but they are issued by the police and municipalities and checked on their own apps and websites — for example the MOI UAE app or your emirate's police service. ICP and GDRFA do not show traffic fines.

🔎 How to check Emirates ID fines online: 2 official ways

There are two official ways to check the fines on your file online. Which one you use depends on where your visa was issued:

1️⃣ ICP Smart Services — all emirates
Works for residence visas and entry visas issued in any emirate, including Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah — and Dubai too. If in doubt, start here.
2️⃣ GDRFA Dubai — Dubai visas only
GDRFA is Dubai's immigration authority. Its Fines Inquiry covers files issued in Dubai only. If your visa is from another emirate, use ICP.

Both inquiries show the immigration fines on your residence or visa file. The Emirates ID late renewal fine itself is calculated by ICP when you renew your card — see Method 1 below.

What you need: your 15-digit Emirates ID number (or your unified number, file number or passport details), your date of birth and your gender, and for ICP also your nationality. Both inquiries are open to the public — no UAE PASS login is needed just to check. You only sign in with UAE PASS later, to pay a fine or to apply for a renewal or exemption.

🧭 Method 1: check your fine on ICP Smart Services (all emirates)

ICP's Fines Inquiry is the federal route, so it works whichever emirate issued your visa. Here is exactly what the page looks like today:

Step 1: Open ICP Smart Services → Public Services → Fines Inquiry

Go to ICP Smart Services (smartservices.icp.gov.ae), open Public Services in the top menu, then click the Fines Inquiry button at the top of the page. (The File Validity button next to it checks your status and grace period — see Method 1b below.)

Step 2: Choose "Emirates ID Number" and the type

Under Search By, choose Emirates ID Number. You can also search by Emirate Unified Number, file number or passport information. Under Select the Type, choose Residency for a residence visa, or Visa for an entry permit such as a visit visa.

Step 3: Enter your details

Type your Emirates ID number, then choose your nationality, date of birth and gender exactly as they appear in your file.

Step 4: Complete the verification and click Search

Let the security check finish, then click Search. ICP shows any fines registered on your residency or visa file. If you owe a fine, you can pay it online through ICP's fine payment service after signing in with UAE PASS, or at an ICP customer happiness centre or registered typing centre.

ICP Smart Services → Public Services → Fines Inquiry, searching by Emirates ID number. Screenshot taken 9 October 2026; no personal data entered.

Where the Emirates ID late renewal fine shows up

The ID card delay fine is calculated by ICP's system when you apply to renew your Emirates ID. When you renew on the ICP Smart Services website or the UAEICP app (signed in with UAE PASS), the fee step lists any delay fine together with the renewal fees before you pay. That is also the moment to ask for an exemption if you qualify — see how to apply for an Emirates ID fine exemption below.

Method 1b: check your status and grace period with ICP File Validity

Before you worry about the amount, check the dates. ICP's File Validity inquiry (the button next to Fines Inquiry) shows whether your residency, visa or ID card is still valid. For a cancelled or expired residence visa it is the quickest way to see how long you may still stay:

  1. Open Public Services → File Validity.
  2. Under Search By, choose File No. or Passport Information, and under Select the Type choose Residency, Visa or Emirates ID.
  3. Under File Type, choose Emirates ID Number (or unified number or file number) and enter it with your nationality and date of birth.
  4. Complete the security check and click Search.

🏙️ Method 2: check your fine on GDRFA Dubai (Dubai visas only)

If your residence visa or entry permit was issued in Dubai, GDRFA Dubai's Fines Inquiry Service shows the fines on your own file or on the files of people under your sponsorship. It does not cover visas from the other emirates.

Step 1: Open GDRFA Dubai → Fines Inquiry

Go to gdrfad.gov.ae and click Fines Inquiry in the row of quick services on the home page, or open the GDRFA Fines Inquiry Service directly.

Step 2: Choose "Emirates ID" as the search type

The form offers four search types: File Number, UDB Number, Emirates ID and Passport Number. Choose Emirates ID. (If you search by file number instead, GDRFA also asks for the file type — Resident or Permit — and the place of issue.)

Step 3: Enter your Emirates ID number, date of birth and gender

Type your 15-digit Emirates ID number, pick your date of birth from the day, month and year lists, and choose your gender.

Step 4: Complete the security check and click Submit

Tick the security check and click Submit. GDRFA then shows any fines registered on the file.

🧮 Emirates ID fine calculation and maximum penalty

The Emirates ID late renewal fine follows one simple rule:

1
Day 1 to day 30 after expiry NO FINE
You can still renew without a delay fine.
2
From day 31 AED 20 / DAY
AED 20 for each day of delay.
3
Cap reached MAX AED 1,000
After 50 days of fines — about 80 days after expiry — the fine stops at AED 1,000.

Formula: (days since expiry − 30) × AED 20, never more than AED 1,000. A few examples:

You renew…Days finedEmirates ID fine
20 days after expiry0AED 0
45 days after expiry15 × AED 20AED 300
60 days after expiry30 × AED 20AED 600
80 days after expiry50 × AED 20AED 1,000 (cap reached)
1 year after expirycappedAED 1,000

The fine comes on top of the normal renewal fees, and it has to be paid (or exempted) before the renewal goes through. For every renewal fee, see our Emirates ID cost breakdown. ICP's system works out the exact number of days, so the amount on your renewal application is the one that counts.

⚠️
The AED 1,000 cap applies to the ID card fine only. If your residence visa expired too, the visa overstay fine is separate, runs at AED 50 a day after your grace period, and ICP states no maximum for it.

Comparison of two UAE fines: Emirates ID late renewal at AED 20 per day after 30 days, capped at AED 1,000, and residence visa overstay at AED 50 per day after the grace period, with no cap stated by ICP

How your residence visa and Emirates ID are linked

  • Same dates. For residents, the Emirates ID is issued for the period of the residence visa (ICP charges the card fee per year of residence), so the card normally expires on the same day as your visa.
  • Renewed together. ICP's renewal service says the ID card renewal is submitted together with the residence application through the unified residence and identity form in every emirate except Dubai. Dubai is the exception: there the residence renewal (with GDRFA) and the ID card application are separate.
  • Cancelled together. When a residence visa is cancelled, the Emirates ID is cancelled automatically as part of the process. From then on, the question is no longer the ID card but your stay: once your grace period ends, overstay fines apply.
🧾 Example: both expired on the same day
Rahul's residence visa and Emirates ID expired on the same day. His category has a 30-day grace period, and he renews 75 days after expiry:
  • Emirates ID: 75 − 30 = 45 days × AED 20 = AED 900 (under the cap)
  • Residence visa: 75 − 30 = 45 days × AED 50 = AED 2,250
  • Total fines: AED 3,150, plus his normal renewal fees
An illustration only: grace periods differ by category, and ICP or GDRFA calculates the exact amounts on your file.

⏳ Residence visa grace periods and overstay penalties

After a residence visa expires or is cancelled, you get a grace period to renew, change status or leave. Don't assume it is 30 days. Since the visa reforms of October 2022, the grace period depends on your residence category and can be as long as six months. The tiers reported in UAE media, based on ICP's system, are:

Grace periodTypical categories
180 daysGolden visa and Green visa holders and their families; widows or divorcees of a foreign resident; university-sponsored students after completing their studies; skilled professionals in MOHRE levels 1 and 2
90 daysProperty owners; skilled professionals in MOHRE level 3
60 daysResidence permits issued with a guarantor or host
30 daysAll other categories

Your exact last day is what counts, so check it rather than counting yourself: ICP's File Validity inquiry shows the days you are still allowed to stay, and a cancelled visa's last date to leave is printed on the cancellation paper.

How much is the overstay fine?

Once the grace period ends, ICP charges AED 50 per day for an expired permitted stay, or a cancelled or expired entry visa, residence permit, exit permit or newborn registration. Unlike the Emirates ID fine, ICP states no maximum, so the amount keeps growing until you renew, change status or leave. Visit and tourist visas have no grace period: their fine starts the day after the visa expires.

Days of overstay (after your grace period)Overstay fine
10 daysAED 500
45 daysAED 2,250
90 daysAED 4,500
180 daysAED 9,000
1 yearAED 18,250

The fine has to be paid before you can adjust your status or leave the country: ICP's own condition is that the status must be adjusted, or the person must leave the UAE, after paying any fines incurred.

📅
2026 note: the airspace-closure exemption has ended. In March 2026 ICP exempted people who could not leave the UAE because of airspace closures and flight suspensions from overstay fines from 28 February 2026. ICP then gave them a final 30-day grace period, from 10 June to 9 July 2026, to regularise their status or leave. If you were covered and have not done either, check your file now.

🛂 How to check UAE residence visa overstay fines

Overstay fines are checked with the same two official tools as above:

  1. Check your dates first with ICP File Validity, so you know whether you are still inside your grace period.
  2. Check the amount with the Fines Inquiry: on ICP (any emirate) choose type Residency for a residence visa or Visa for a visit or other entry visa; on GDRFA (Dubai visas) search by Emirates ID, or by file number with file type Resident or Permit.
  3. Pay or plan: pay online through ICP's visa and residence violation fine payment (UAE PASS), at an ICP customer happiness centre or typing centre, or — for Dubai visas — through GDRFA's channels such as an Amer centre. If the amount is large, ask about a reduction or waiver before you pay (see below).

🧾 How to apply for an Emirates ID fine exemption

ICP has an official service for this: the Request for Exemption from Delay Fees. It asks ICP to exempt you from the administrative delay fees on your ID card according to its approved exemption decisions. You don't file it on its own — it is submitted together with your ID card renewal (or new ID card) application.

Who can qualify?

ICP decides each request against its exemption decisions. For some cases the system applies the exemption automatically before you pay; in others you upload proof. Cases ICP exempts include:

  • You were outside the UAE: you left before your card expired and stayed abroad for more than three months (as reported from ICP).
  • Your card expired after a deportation order, administrative or judicial.
  • Your passport was held during a court case — ICP asks for proof from the authority concerned.
  • UAE nationals who had no ID card before obtaining citizenship and their family book.

How to apply, step by step

1
Start your Emirates ID renewal
On the ICP Smart Services website or the UAEICP app (sign in with UAE PASS), or at an ICP customer happiness centre.
2
Review your details
Check the data ICP retrieves and correct it if needed.
3
Request the exemption at the fee step
Instead of paying the delay fine, choose to apply for the exemption and attach your supporting proof.
4
Wait for ICP's answer
ICP accepts, rejects or returns the request for changes. ICP lists the service time as 2 days.
5
Complete your renewal
If approved, you pay the normal fees only. If rejected, you pay the fine and continue.
Were you abroad when your Emirates ID expired?
If you left the UAE before your card expired and stayed abroad for more than three months, you may qualify for an exemption. We review your case, prepare the proof ICP asks for and file the exemption with your renewal. ICP makes the final decision.

🤝 How to request a UAE residence visa fine reduction or waiver

Overstay fines can be waived or reduced in some cases, decided case by case by the immigration authority. Where you apply depends on where your visa was issued.

Dubai visas: GDRFA "Exemption from fines for violators of Residence Law"

GDRFA Dubai's fines exemption service lets you ask for the fine for a residence law violation to be waived or reduced. You apply at an Amer centre or at a GDRFA customer happiness centre, such as the General Administration at Al Aweer. GDRFA lists these documents:

  1. A copy of the violator's passport.
  2. A letter explaining the reasons for the violation and why the fine cannot be paid.
  3. Any other documents the Fines Committee asks for.

GDRFA lists a fee of AED 15.75 when the sponsor is an individual, plus the Amer centre's own service fee (reported at about AED 320 to 390). The committee reviews each case and may ask for more information. Media reports say committee reductions are generally considered for larger fines (AED 4,000 or more is often quoted), so check whether your case is eligible before you apply.

Other emirates: ICP

If your visa was issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah, your fines sit on your ICP file. ICP does not publish a separate service for reducing an individual's overstay fine, so ask at an ICP customer happiness centre whether your case can be reviewed, and bring the same kind of proof: your passport copy, a letter explaining what happened, and documents that support it.

General relief announced by ICP

From time to time ICP announces relief for whole groups of people — amnesty programmes (the most recent ran from 1 September to 31 December 2024) or humanitarian decisions such as the 2026 airspace-closure exemption. These are time-limited. We found no general amnesty open on 9 October 2026; ICP also issues decisions for specific groups or nationalities, so check ICP's official channels.

Illustration of a fine waiver request letter with supporting documents: Emirates ID delay fine exemption through ICP with the renewal, Dubai visa overstay fine waiver or reduction through GDRFA, other emirates: ask ICP for a review
Exemptions, waivers and reductions are decided by ICP or GDRFA Dubai, case by case.

How to make your request stronger

  • Explain honestly and specifically why you overstayed: illness, job loss, a court case, a travel ban or a family emergency.
  • Attach proof for every point: medical reports, a termination or employer letter, court papers, travel records.
  • Apply early. Overstay fines keep growing, so ask before you renew, change status or leave, while the fine is still open.
  • Use the right authority: GDRFA for Dubai visas, ICP for the other emirates.
📌
No one can guarantee a waiver. Exemptions, waivers and reductions are decided by ICP or GDRFA Dubai, case by case. FamilyVisa.ae helps you prepare and submit a complete request; we never promise a particular outcome.

🧑‍💼 When to seek professional assistance

A simple check takes two minutes on ICP or GDRFA. It is worth getting help when:

  • Your fines are large or growing, or both your Emirates ID and visa have lapsed.
  • You think you qualify for an exemption, waiver or reduction and need the right letter and proof.
  • The portals show "no record", or you don't know which emirate issued your visa.
  • Your case involves absconding, a court case, a travel ban or a cancelled visa.

❓ Frequently asked questions

1. How do I check my Emirates ID fine online?

Use one of the two official portals. On ICP Smart Services (smartservices.icp.gov.ae), open Public Services, then Fines Inquiry, search by Emirates ID number, choose Residency or Visa, enter your nationality, date of birth and gender, complete the verification and click Search. ICP works for visas from every emirate. If your visa was issued in Dubai, you can also use GDRFA Dubai's Fines Inquiry on gdrfad.gov.ae. The Emirates ID late renewal fine itself is shown on your renewal application before you pay.

2. How much is the Emirates ID fine per day?

AED 20 for each day of delay. It starts after the first 30 days following the card's expiry date, so from day 31, and the total is capped at AED 1,000.

3. What is the maximum fine for late Emirates ID renewal?

AED 1,000. At AED 20 a day, the cap is reached after 50 days of fines, about 80 days after the card expired. The same AED 20-a-day rate and AED 1,000 cap also apply to late reporting of changes in your personal data and to late ID card registration.

4. When does the Emirates ID late renewal fine start?

After 30 days. You can renew within one month of the expiry date without a delay fine. From day 31, ICP charges AED 20 per day until you renew, up to AED 1,000.

5. Can I check Emirates ID fines for an Abu Dhabi or Sharjah visa on GDRFA?

No. GDRFA's Fines Inquiry only covers visas issued in Dubai. For a visa issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain or Fujairah, use the Fines Inquiry on ICP Smart Services, which covers every emirate.

6. How do I check my Emirates ID fine in Dubai?

For a Dubai visa, go to gdrfad.gov.ae, click Fines Inquiry, choose Emirates ID as the search type, enter your Emirates ID number, date of birth and gender, complete the security check and click Submit. GDRFA shows the residence and visa fines on your file, and ICP's Fines Inquiry covers Dubai visas too. The Emirates ID late renewal fine itself is calculated by ICP and shown when you apply to renew your card.

7. Is there an app to check Emirates ID fines?

ICP's official UAEICP app handles Emirates ID renewal, where any delay fine is shown before you pay, and the request for exemption from delay fees. To check residence or visa fines without signing in, use the Fines Inquiry on the ICP Smart Services website, or GDRFA's Fines Inquiry for Dubai visas. Traffic fines are checked separately, for example on the MOI UAE app.

8. How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?

AED 50 per day once your grace period ends. ICP applies the same AED 50 daily fine to an expired or cancelled residence permit, an expired entry visa such as a visit visa, an exit permit and late newborn registration. Visit and tourist visas have no grace period, so their fine starts the day after the visa expires.

9. Is there a maximum limit on UAE visa overstay fines?

ICP's fine schedule states no maximum for overstay fines, so they keep adding up at AED 50 a day, about AED 1,500 a month or AED 18,250 a year, until you renew, change status or leave. The AED 1,000 cap applies only to the Emirates ID delay fine.

10. How long is the grace period after a UAE residence visa expires or is cancelled?

It depends on your residence category, so don't assume 30 days. As reported from ICP's system, Golden and Green visa holders and their families, among others, get 180 days; property owners and MOHRE level-3 skilled professionals get 90 days; residence permits issued with a guarantor or host get 60 days; and other categories get 30 days. Check your exact last date on ICP's File Validity inquiry or on your visa cancellation paper.

11. How do I check my overstay fine in the UAE?

First check your dates on ICP's File Validity inquiry, then check the amount on ICP's Fines Inquiry: choose Residency for a residence visa or Visa for an entry visa. For a Dubai visa you can also use GDRFA's Fines Inquiry. Both work with your Emirates ID number and your personal details.

12. Can I get my Emirates ID fine waived?

Only if your case fits ICP's approved exemption decisions, for example if you left the UAE before your card expired and stayed abroad for more than three months, if it expired after a deportation order, or if your passport was held in a court case. You apply through ICP's Request for Exemption from Delay Fees together with your renewal application, upload your proof, and ICP accepts or rejects the request.

13. Can UAE visa overstay fines be reduced or waived?

In some cases, decided case by case. For Dubai visas, GDRFA's Exemption from fines for violators of Residence Law service lets you ask for the fine to be waived or reduced, through an Amer centre or a GDRFA customer happiness centre, with your passport copy and a letter explaining the reasons and why you cannot pay. ICP does not publish a separate service for individual overstay fines, so for visas from the other emirates ask at an ICP customer happiness centre whether your case can be reviewed. Approval is never guaranteed.

14. Do I pay both fines if my residence visa and Emirates ID expired together?

Both can apply, because they are separate fines with separate rules: the Emirates ID delay fine is AED 20 a day after 30 days, up to AED 1,000, and the residence overstay fine is AED 50 a day after your grace period, with no maximum stated by ICP. If your visa is cancelled, your Emirates ID is cancelled with it, and only the overstay rules apply once your grace period ends.

15. Are traffic fines the same as Emirates ID fines?

No. Traffic, parking and municipality fines are linked to your Emirates ID number, but they are issued by the police and municipalities and checked on their own channels, such as the MOI UAE app or your emirate's police service. ICP and GDRFA show the immigration fines on your residence or visa file, and ICP charges the ID card delay fine when you renew.

16. What happens if I don't pay my overstay fine?

It keeps growing at AED 50 a day, and it has to be paid before you can renew, change your status or leave the UAE: ICP's condition is that fines are paid before the status is adjusted or the person departs. If you cannot pay, ask about a reduction or waiver as early as possible.

17. Is the 2026 overstay fine exemption still in place?

No. In March 2026, ICP exempted people who could not leave the UAE because of airspace closures and flight suspensions from overstay fines from 28 February 2026. ICP then gave a final 30-day grace period, from 10 June to 9 July 2026, to regularise status or leave. That period has ended.

18. Is FamilyVisa.ae a government website?

No. FamilyVisa.ae is an independent service provider operated by 800 DOCS LLC, a DET-licensed UAE visa services company in Dubai. We check fines through the official ICP and GDRFA channels and prepare and submit applications and requests on your behalf; ICP and GDRFA make every decision.
