Visa Cancellation in the UAE (2026): How to Cancel a Family or Dependent Visa — Fees, Steps, Inside or Outside the Country, and the Grace Period
Visa cancellation in the UAE for a family member is simpler than most people expect: the sponsor cancels the dependent's residence with the immigration authority only — GDRFA in Dubai, ICP in the other emirates — and there is no labour (MOHRE) step. The government fee is AED 85 when you apply yourself online and AED 189 at an Amer centre, and it is now the same whether your wife, husband, child or parent is inside or outside the UAE. This guide explains who can cancel a dependent visa, the documents, the steps, cancelling while the family member is abroad, the order to follow when the sponsor's own visa is cancelled, how an employment visa cancellation differs, and what happens after cancellation — the grace period, the Emirates ID and fines.

👪 Who can cancel a family or dependent visa in the UAE?
Only the sponsor. A dependent visa — the residence of a wife, husband, son, daughter or parent — is issued under the sponsor's family file, so the sponsor is the one who applies to cancel it. The family member cannot cancel his or her own dependent visa, and a new employer cannot cancel it either. The sponsor applies to the authority that issued the visa: GDRFA Dubai for Dubai visas, ICP (the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security) for visas from the other emirates.
⚖️ What is the difference between cancelling a dependent visa and an employment visa?
A dependent visa needs one authority; an employment visa needs two. A family member has no work permit, so the sponsor only cancels the residence with the immigration authority. An employee's visa is cancelled by the employer, and it has two parts: the work permit at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) and the residence at GDRFA or ICP. The order depends on where the employee is:
| Dependent (family) visa | Employment visa | |
|---|---|---|
| Who cancels | The family sponsor | The employer (company PRO or Amer centre) |
| Authorities | Immigration only (GDRFA / ICP) | MOHRE (work permit) and immigration (residence) |
| Person inside the UAE | One immigration cancellation | MOHRE first, then immigration |
| Person outside the UAE | One immigration cancellation — same fee | Immigration first, then MOHRE |
| Grace period after cancellation | 59 days | Usually 30 days; up to 180 days for some skilled categories |
| Government fee | AED 85 online · AED 189 at an Amer centre | Paid by the employer |
📂 What documents do I need to cancel a dependent visa?
GDRFA Dubai lists two documents for cancelling a family member's residence; clear photos or scans are enough:
The dependent's Emirates ID is cancelled together with the residence. No MOHRE document is needed — that is only for employees. For parents, the refundable deposit is returned after the cancellation.
🪜 How do I cancel my wife's, husband's, child's or parent's visa? Step by step
There are three ways to cancel a dependent visa, and the government steps are the same in each:

🌍 Can I cancel my family member's visa while they are outside the UAE?
Yes. The dependent does not need to come back: the sponsor applies online or at an Amer centre with the same documents. Until recently, cancelling a residence for someone outside the country cost more than inside — about AED 100 more. The fee is now the same: AED 85 online or AED 189 at an Amer centre, wherever the family member is.
What happens if a family member stays outside the UAE for more than six months?
Under the general rule published on u.ae, a residence visa becomes invalid when its holder stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row (Golden Visa holders and some other categories are exempt). The record still sits on the sponsor's family file, so the sponsor should cancel it formally — especially before cancelling his or her own visa or sponsoring the same person again. If the family member wants to come back instead, see our guide to the visa status check and ask us about the return options.
🧳 Leaving the UAE for good: in what order are the family's visas cancelled?
Dependents first, the sponsor last. The sponsor's residence cannot be cancelled while family members are still on the file, so the sequence is:
💰 How much does visa cancellation cost in Dubai and the UAE?
AED 85 per dependent when you apply yourself online, AED 189 at an Amer centre — the same for a wife, a husband, a child or a parent, and the same whether the family member is inside or outside the UAE. There is no separate Emirates ID cancellation fee: the card is cancelled with the residence.

| Cancellation | DIY online (GDRFA / ICP) | Amer centre |
|---|---|---|
| One dependent Inside or outside the UAE | AED 85 | AED 189 |
| Spouse and one child | AED 170 | AED 378 |
| Spouse and two children | AED 255 | AED 567 |
| Spouse, two children and both parents | AED 425 | AED 945 |
What else can add to the cost?
Fees as paid by FamilyVisa.ae on 14 October 2026; the amount shown in the GDRFA or ICP system when you submit is the final reference.
Is it cheaper to cancel the visa online?
Yes — AED 104 cheaper per dependent. Online you pay AED 85; an Amer centre charges AED 189 in total. What the Amer centre adds is a typist who checks the file and handles a rejection for you.
📅 What happens after a dependent visa is cancelled?
How long is the grace period after visa cancellation?
59 days for a family (dependent) residence — counted from the date of cancellation. Within that time the family member can leave the UAE, move to a new sponsor (for example a new employer or the other parent) or apply for a visit visa. After the grace period, the overstay fine is AED 50 a day. Read more in our visa fine check guide.
Is the grace period the same for an employment visa?
No. After an employment visa is cancelled, most employees get 30 days. Longer grace periods — up to 180 days — apply to some skilled categories, depending on the employee's skill level. The family members on a cancelled sponsor's file follow their own cancellation date and their own 59 days.
What happens to the Emirates ID?
It is cancelled together with the residence — there is no separate Emirates ID cancellation. The card can no longer be used for banks, telecom or government services, so update those accounts before or right after the cancellation.
Does a cancelled visa stop the family member from coming back?
No. A normal cancellation is not a ban. The family member can enter later on a visit visa or be sponsored again on a new family visa — even by the same sponsor — once the earlier residence is properly cancelled and any fines are paid.
💼 Changing jobs: must my family's visas be cancelled, or can they be put on hold?
When the sponsor moves to a new employer, his or her own visa is cancelled and a new one is issued. The family's visas hang on the sponsor's file, so they must either be cancelled and issued again under the new visa, or put on hold while the new employer issues the sponsor's visa, and then linked to it again. Which route applies is decided by GDRFA or ICP — message us before your employer cancels your visa, and we will tell you which one fits your case.
🔎 How do I check whether a visa has been cancelled?
Check the residence status online with the passport number or the Emirates ID number on the ICP website or app, or on GDRFA Dubai for Dubai visas — our visa status check guide shows each step. A cancelled residence shows as cancelled with the date; the GDRFA approval message and the cancellation paper are your proof. If it still shows as valid after a few working days, contact GDRFA, ICP or us to check why.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. How much does it cost to cancel a family visa in Dubai?
AED 85 per dependent when the sponsor applies online through GDRFA or ICP, or AED 189 at an Amer centre. The fee is the same for a wife, husband, child or parent, and the same whether the family member is inside or outside the UAE.
2. Who can cancel a dependent visa in the UAE?
Only the sponsor — the family member who holds the family file. The dependent cannot cancel his or her own residence, and an employer cannot cancel a family member's visa.
3. Is the cancellation fee different if my family member is outside the UAE?
Not any more. It used to cost about AED 100 more to cancel the visa of someone outside the country; the fee is now the same: AED 85 online or AED 189 at an Amer centre.
4. Can I cancel my wife's visa while she is outside the UAE?
Yes. The sponsor applies online or at an Amer centre with his passport and his wife's passport; she does not need to come back for the cancellation.
5. Do I have to cancel my dependents' visas before my own?
Yes. A sponsor's residence cannot be cancelled while family members are still on the file, so the dependents are cancelled first and the sponsor's own visa last.
6. What documents are needed to cancel a dependent visa?
The sponsor's passport and the dependent's passport, as listed by GDRFA Dubai. The dependent's Emirates ID is cancelled with the residence. No MOHRE document is needed for a family member.
7. Is there a MOHRE step for cancelling a family visa?
No. A dependent has no work permit, so only the immigration authority (GDRFA in Dubai, ICP in the other emirates) cancels the residence. The MOHRE step applies to employment visas.
8. How is an employment visa cancelled?
The employer cancels it in two parts: the work permit at MOHRE and the residence at GDRFA or ICP. If the employee is inside the UAE, MOHRE comes first and then immigration; if the employee is outside the UAE, immigration comes first and then MOHRE.
9. How long does visa cancellation take?
GDRFA Dubai states about 48 hours for a complete application. The approval is usually sent to the sponsor's registered mobile number and email.
10. What is the grace period after a family visa is cancelled?
59 days for a family (dependent) residence, counted from the cancellation date. Employees usually get 30 days, and some skilled categories up to 180 days. After that the overstay fine is AED 50 per day.
11. Can my family stay in the UAE after their visa is cancelled?
Only during the 59-day grace period. In that time they can leave, move to a new sponsor or apply for a visit visa.
12. Is the Emirates ID cancelled with the visa?
Yes. The Emirates ID is cancelled together with the residence; there is no separate Emirates ID cancellation or fee.
13. Can I cancel the visa at an Amer centre?
Yes. In Dubai any Amer centre can submit the cancellation for AED 189 in total; in the other emirates ICP-approved typing centres offer the same service, and the fee shown at submission applies.
14. Can I cancel a family visa online with UAE Pass?
Yes. Log in with UAE Pass to the GDRFA Dubai website or app (ICP smart services for visas from the other emirates), choose the family member's residence and apply for cancellation. The fee online is AED 85.
15. What happens if I leave the UAE without cancelling my family's visas?
Leaving does not cancel a residence. The record stays on the sponsor's file and the sponsor's own visa cannot be cancelled until the dependents are cancelled.
16. What if my family member has been outside the UAE for more than six months?
Under the general rule on u.ae, a residence becomes invalid after more than 180 days outside the UAE, with some exceptions such as Golden Visa holders. The sponsor should still cancel it formally to close the record on the family file.
17. What happens to my family's visas when I change jobs?
Your own visa is cancelled and reissued by the new employer, so your family's visas are either cancelled and issued again, or put on hold and linked to your new visa. GDRFA or ICP decides; ask us before your employer cancels your visa.
18. Can I cancel my parents' visa and get the deposit back?
Yes. Parents' visas are cancelled like any other dependent visa, and the refundable deposit paid for their sponsorship is returned after the cancellation.
19. Can a cancelled family member come back to the UAE?
Yes. A normal cancellation is not a ban: the family member can return on a visit visa or be sponsored again on a new family visa once fines, if any, are paid.
20. How do I check if a visa has been cancelled?
Check the residence status with the passport or Emirates ID number on the ICP website or app, or on GDRFA Dubai for Dubai visas. A cancelled residence shows as cancelled with the date.
21. Do I have to pay fines before cancelling a dependent visa?
Yes. Any overstay fine on the file must be paid before the cancellation is accepted. After the grace period the fine is AED 50 per day.
22. Can FamilyVisa.ae cancel my family's visas for me?
Yes. Send the passports on WhatsApp: we check the file for fines, cancel each family member in the right order — inside or outside the UAE — and send you the confirmation.
