Visa Grace Period UAE (2026): How Many Days You Can Stay After a Residence Visa Is Cancelled or Expires — Family, Employment, Golden and Visit Visas
The visa grace period in the UAE is the number of days you may still stay after your residence visa is cancelled or expires, before the overstay fine starts. For a family (dependent) visa it is 59 days; for most employment visas it is usually 30 days; Golden and Green Visa holders and some skilled employees get up to 180 days; and a visit visa has no grace period at all now. After the last grace day, the fine is AED 50 a day for every visa, in every emirate. This guide gives the grace period by visa type, what it means for your wife, husband, children and parents, when it starts, how to check it and what to do before it runs out.

📊 How long is the grace period after visa cancellation in the UAE?
It depends on the visa you held. The UAE no longer gives everyone the same 30 days. The grace period is set by category, and the immigration system — ICP, or GDRFA for Dubai visas — applies it to each file. Here is the grace period by visa type as it works in October 2026:
| Visa | Grace period | After that |
|---|---|---|
| Family / dependent residence Wife, husband, children, parents | 59 days after cancellation | AED 50 a day |
| Employment visa | Usually 30 days; up to 180 days for some skilled categories | AED 50 a day |
| Golden or Green Visa | Longer — up to 180 days | AED 50 a day |
| Visit or tourist visa | None — the fine starts the day after expiry | AED 50 a day |
| Emirates ID (not renewed) | 30 days after expiry | AED 20 a day, maximum AED 1,000 |

Who gets the longer 180-day grace period?
Longer grace periods — up to 180 days — go to Golden and Green Visa holders and to some skilled professionals, depending on their MOHRE skill level. Reports from ICP customer service have also listed widows and divorcees of residents and graduates sponsored by a UAE university among the longer categories. The exact number of days is decided by ICP or GDRFA for each file, so check your own record before you plan around 180 days.
👪 What is the grace period for my wife, children and parents?
59 days for each family member, counted from that person's own cancellation date. The family's grace periods do not follow the sponsor's. If you are an employee with a 30-day grace period and your family is cancelled a week later, your wife and children still have their own 59 days from their own date.
Do dependents lose their visa when the sponsor's visa is cancelled?
The sponsor cannot cancel his or her own residence while dependents are still on the file, so the family is cancelled first — dependents first, the sponsor last. Each cancellation starts that person's grace period. When the sponsor only changes jobs, the family's visas are cancelled or put on hold, as decided by GDRFA or ICP. Our visa cancellation guide explains the order and the fees, and the job change guide covers the hold option.
💼 How many days can I stay after my employment visa is cancelled?
Usually 30 days. Most employees have 30 days from the cancellation to leave the UAE, join a new employer or change to another visa. Some skilled categories get longer — up to 180 days — depending on the skill level in the MOHRE record. For a mainland employee, the employer cancels the work permit with MOHRE and then the residence with immigration; the grace period follows the cancellation date shown on the immigration file.
✈️ Is there a grace period for a visit visa?
No. Until 2023, visit visas had a 10-day grace period. Dubai removed it in 2023 and today the overstay fine of AED 50 a day starts the day after the visit visa expires. A visitor who wants to stay longer must extend the visa or change status before the expiry date — see our visit visa extension guide.
⏳ Is there a grace period after the residence visa expires?
A residence that simply expires without being renewed is treated much like a cancelled one: in practice the grace period is counted from the expiry date, and after it the daily fine starts. But an expired visa is the riskier case — the record stays on the sponsor's file, the Emirates ID may carry its own late fine and plans are harder to change. Renew the visa before it expires, or cancel it on purpose, so the dates are clear.
🗓️ When does the grace period start?
On the cancellation date in the immigration record — or on the expiry date, for a visa that was not renewed. It does not start on the day you resign, the last working day or the day you collect the cancellation paper. For mainland employees, the employer cancels the MOHRE work permit first; for a dependent, the date of the GDRFA or ICP cancellation is the one that counts.
How do I count my last grace day?
Take the cancellation date and add the grace days. Example: a family visa cancelled on 1 October has its 59th day on 29 November. If the wife leaves on 3 December, she has 4 days of overstay: 4 × AED 50 = AED 200, plus an exit pass of about AED 450 at the airport.
🔎 How can I check my grace period online?
There is no single grace period counter, but the date you need is on the record:
✅ What should I do during the grace period?
Use the grace period on purpose. There are three choices, and the right one depends on whether you stay in the UAE:

Can I change to a new visa without leaving the UAE?
Yes — as long as it is filed within the grace period. A wife whose visa was under her husband can move to her own employer; a child can move to the other parent; a parent can move to another son or daughter who qualifies. See how to apply for a UAE family visa for the sponsor rules.
Can the grace period be extended?
Not as a normal service. The way to get more time is to move to another visa before the last day. Special decisions — such as an amnesty — are rare and time-limited; read our UAE visa amnesty guide to see why none is active now.
💰 What happens if I stay after the grace period ends?
The overstay fine starts: AED 50 a day, for every visa, in every emirate. There is no published maximum. How you pay depends on what you do next:

🕰️ Old rules vs 2026: what changed in the grace period?
Many websites and AI answers still show the old grace periods. These are the current rules:
| Topic | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Residence grace period | 30 days for almost everyone | By category: 59 days family, usually 30 days employees, up to 180 days for some |
| Family visa | 30 days | 59 days after cancellation |
| Visit visa | 10 days | No grace period (removed in 2023) |
| Overstay fine | Different rates for visit and residence visas | AED 50 a day for all visas |
| Amnesty | 2024 nationwide amnesty; 2026 flight-disruption exemption until 9 July 2026 | No general amnesty active |

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. How long is the grace period after visa cancellation in the UAE?
It depends on the visa. A family (dependent) visa has 59 days after cancellation, most employment visas have 30 days, some skilled employees and Golden or Green Visa holders get up to 180 days, and a visit visa has no grace period.
2. What is the grace period for a family visa after cancellation?
59 days from the cancellation date. Within that time the wife, husband, child or parent can leave the UAE or move to a new visa without a fine.
3. Is the family visa grace period 60 days or 59 days?
Use 59 days. Some older pages say 60 days, but counting 59 days keeps you safe from a one-day fine.
4. How many days can I stay in the UAE after my employment visa is cancelled?
Usually 30 days. Some skilled professionals get longer, up to 180 days. The exact last day is shown on the ICP or GDRFA system.
5. Is there a grace period for a visit visa in the UAE?
No. The old 10-day grace period was removed in 2023. The overstay fine of AED 50 a day starts the day after the visit visa expires.
6. Is there a grace period after the residence visa expires?
In practice the grace period is also counted from the expiry date when the residence is not renewed, but always check the exact date on ICP or GDRFA. Renew or cancel before the expiry date to be safe.
7. What happens after the grace period ends?
An overstay fine of AED 50 a day is added for every day you stay. You pay it when you leave, with an exit pass of about AED 450, or when you change status to a new visa.
8. Do my wife and children get the same grace period as me?
Each family member has their own date. Dependents get 59 days counted from their own cancellation, even if the sponsor's employment visa has a 30-day grace period.
9. When does the grace period start?
On the cancellation date shown on the immigration file, or on the expiry date if the residence was not renewed. It does not start on the day you resign or the day you receive the paper.
10. How can I check my grace period online?
Check the residence status on ICP smart services or GDRFA Dubai with the passport or Emirates ID number. The record shows the cancellation date; count your grace days from it, or send us the details on WhatsApp.
11. Can I change to a new visa during the grace period?
Yes. A new employer, a spouse or a parent can sponsor you, and the change of status is done inside the UAE without leaving, as long as it is filed before the grace period ends.
12. Can I get a visit visa during the grace period?
Often yes, through a change of status to a visit visa, depending on your nationality and the visa type. Apply before the last grace day.
13. Can the grace period be extended?
Not as a normal service. If you need more time, change to another visa, such as a visit visa or a new residence, before the grace period ends.
14. Do Golden Visa family members get 180 days?
Golden and Green Visa holders get longer grace periods of up to 180 days, and their family members can also get longer periods. The exact days are set by ICP or GDRFA for each file.
15. Is there a grace period for the Emirates ID?
The Emirates ID late renewal fine starts 30 days after expiry, at AED 20 a day up to AED 1,000. A cancelled residence has no Emirates ID fine because the card is cancelled with it.
16. Can I leave and come back during the grace period?
Once you leave on a cancelled visa, the cancelled residence is closed. You come back on a new visa, for example a visit visa or a new family or employment visa.
17. What if my family member is outside the UAE when the visa is cancelled?
There is no grace period to use, because they are not in the country. They can enter again later on a new visa.
18. Is a grace period the same as an amnesty?
No. A grace period is the normal number of days after a cancellation. An amnesty is a special, time-limited decision that waives overstay fines, and none is active now.
19. How much is the fine if I stay one week after the grace period?
Seven days at AED 50 a day, which is AED 350. If you leave the UAE with that fine, add an exit pass of about AED 450 at the airport.
20. My fine after the grace period is large. Can it be reduced?
When the visa fine is above AED 4,000, a waiver request can be filed with immigration. The committee approves or rejects it case by case.
