UAE Visit Visa Extension 2026: How to Extend a Tourist, Relative or Friend Visit Visa Without Leaving — Fees in Dubai and Other Emirates, Limits, Documents and Switching to a Residence Visa

A UAE visit visa extension lets a tourist or a visiting relative stay longer without leaving the country: the sponsor applies to GDRFA for a Dubai visa or to ICP for a visa from the other emirates, before the current visa expires. A tourist visa can be extended up to 120 days in total, and a visit visa for a relative or friend up to 180 days. In Dubai the extension costs AED 600 plus VAT and inside-country fees — about AED 1,150 in total — and ICP lists AED 100 plus AED 500. Below: limits by visa type, fees, documents, steps, expired visas and switching a family member to residence.

📅 THE SHORT ANSWER
Yes — most UAE visit visas can be extended inside the country, one or more times, before they expire.
Tourist visas: up to 120 days in total, extended by the agency, hotel or airline that issued them. Relative or friend visas: up to 180 days, extended by the resident sponsor. Dubai (GDRFA): about AED 1,150 per extension; other emirates (ICP): AED 100 + AED 500. Approval in about 48 hours. There is no grace period — the fine is AED 50 a day from the day after expiry.

✅ Can a UAE visit visa be extended without leaving the country?

Yes, in most cases. Tourist visas, visit visas for relatives and friends, visas to explore job or business opportunities, medical visas and many visas on arrival can be extended from inside the UAE. The visitor does not fly out and come back — the sponsor submits an extension request, the authority approves it, and a new expiry date is issued.

✓When: before the current visa expires. There is no grace period for visit visas now.
iHow often: one or more times, as long as the total stay stays within the limit for the visa type.

📋 How long can each type of visit visa be extended?

The limit is the total stay, counting the original visa and every extension. ICP and GDRFA publish these limits:

Visa typeWho appliesMaximum total stay
Tourist visa (30, 60 or 90 days, single or multiple entry)Tourism company, hotel or airlineUp to 120 days
Visit visa for a relative or friendThe UAE resident sponsorUp to 180 days
Visa to explore job or business opportunitiesThe sponsor of the visaUp to 180 days
5-year multiple-entry tourist visaThe visa holder's sponsor90 days per stay + one extension of up to 90 days; 180 days a year
Visa on arrivalGDRFA or ICP service for visitorsDepends on nationality and visa type
Border-area, truck driver and ship crew permits—Not extendable

How many times can a tourist visa be extended?

One or more times, up to 120 days in total. A 30-day tourist visa, for example, can be extended in steps as long as the whole stay does not pass 120 days. Each extension is a new request with its own fee.

Can the 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa be extended?

Each stay on the 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa is up to 90 days, and it can be extended once by up to 90 days — but the holder cannot spend more than 180 days in the UAE in one year.

🕰️ Old rules vs 2026: what has changed for visit visa extensions?

Many older articles still describe rules that no longer apply. This is the current position:

💰 How much does a visit visa extension cost in Dubai and the other emirates?

The fee depends on the authority that issued the visa: GDRFA Dubai adds inside-country fees for a visitor already in the UAE, so a Dubai extension costs about AED 1,150; ICP lists AED 100 + AED 500.

Is it cheaper to extend online or at an Amer centre?

The government fee is the same. Applying yourself online with UAE Pass costs only the government fee; an Amer centre or an ICP typing centre adds its own typing charge for submitting the request for you.

📂 What documents do I need to extend a visit visa?

Usually very little. GDRFA lists a copy of the passport for a relative or friend visa extension; ICP may also ask for a photo and the documents used for the original visa.

1
The visitor's passport copy — valid for the extended stay (six months' validity is the safe rule).
2
The current visa — the e-visa or entry permit number. ICP may also ask for a photo or proof of relationship.

🪜 How do I extend a visit visa in the UAE? Step by step

The process is the same whether you apply online, at an Amer centre or through FamilyVisa.ae:

2
Submit the extension before expiry BEFORE EXPIRY

⚠️ What if the visit visa has already expired?

The fine starts the next day. There is no grace period for visit visas now — the old 10-day grace period ended in 2023. The overstay fine is AED 50 a day in every emirate, with no published maximum. Whether a late extension is still accepted is decided by GDRFA or ICP; usually the visitor has two ways out:

✈️
Leave the UAE
Pay the fine and an exit pass of about AED 450 at the airport. Check the fine first with our visa fine check guide.
🏠
Stay and change status
If the visitor qualifies for a residence visa — for example as your wife, child or parent — the fine is settled together with the change of status.

Can an overstay fine be reduced or waived?

A waiver request is possible when the fine is above AED 4,000. A committee approves or rejects it case by case, so nobody can promise a reduced figure. There is no general amnesty now: the last nationwide amnesty ran from September to December 2024, and the 2026 flight-disruption exemption ended with a final grace period until 9 July 2026.

👪 How do I extend my parents' or relative's visit visa?

If you sponsored the visit visa, you apply for the extension yourself — your relative cannot do it. A relative or friend visa can be extended one or more times, up to 180 days in total. Keep in mind the rules that applied when you sponsored the visa: since 2025 the sponsor's income rule depends on the relationship.

VisitorSponsor's monthly income (visit visa)
First-degree relatives — parents, spouse, childrenAED 4,000
Second- and third-degree relatives — siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousinsAED 8,000
FriendsAED 15,000

A new relative visit visa from GDRFA Dubai costs AED 200, AED 300 or AED 400 for 30, 60 or 90 days (single entry), plus VAT, insurance and a refundable AED 1,000 deposit — see our visit visa cost guide and the family visit visa guide.

Can my parents stay longer than 180 days?

Not on a visit visa. For a longer stay, sponsor them on a parents residence visa: a salary of AED 10,000, a refundable AED 5,000 deposit and a two-bedroom (2BHK) home. It is a 1-year visa renewed every year — see our parents visa guide.

🏠 Can a relative switch from a visit visa to a family residence visa without leaving?

Yes. When the sponsor meets the family visa rules, the residence entry permit is issued with a change of status inside the UAE, so the wife, husband, children or parents do not need to exit. In Dubai, GDRFA adds an inside-country fee to the entry permit; ICP shows its own total. After the entry permit, the usual steps follow: medical test (18 and over), Emirates ID biometrics and the residence visa.

✓Wife, husband and children: salary AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate — the same in every emirate and for any family size.
✓Parents: salary AED 10,000, a refundable AED 5,000 deposit and a two-bedroom home; 1-year visa.
✓Sons up to 25, daughters at any age while unmarried, children with special needs without age limit.
iSiblings and other relatives: special cases, decided case by case, with a 1-year visa.

💡
Start the residence before the visit visa expires. A change of status filed while the visit visa is still valid avoids any overstay fine. If a fine is already on the file, it is settled with the change of status.

🚫 What are the most common visit visa extension mistakes?

✕Counting on a grace period. There is none for visit visas — the fine starts the day after expiry.
✕Passing the total limit. 120 days for tourists, 180 days for relatives and friends — after that the visitor must leave or change status.
✕Waiting for the last day. Approval takes about 48 hours; apply several days before expiry.

3. How much is the visit visa extension fee in Dubai?

4. How much does ICP charge to extend a visit visa?

For visas from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates, ICP lists an AED 100 application fee and an AED 500 extension fee, plus small e-service fees. Some 14-day visas cost AED 250 to extend.

5. Who applies for the visit visa extension?

The sponsor: the travel agency, hotel or airline for a tourist visa, or the UAE resident who sponsored a relative or friend.

6. Can I extend my own tourist visa?

Not directly. The tourism company, hotel or airline that sponsored it must apply. Contact them before the visa expires.

7. What documents are needed to extend a visit visa?

Usually a copy of the visitor's passport and the current visa. ICP may ask for a photo or proof of relationship.

8. How long does a visit visa extension take?

GDRFA Dubai states about 48 hours and ICP about two working days. Apply several days before the visa expires so the approval arrives in time.

9. Is there a grace period after a visit visa expires?

No. The old 10-day grace period for visit visas no longer applies. The overstay fine of AED 50 a day starts on the day after the visa expires.

10. What happens if I apply for the extension after my visa has expired?

The AED 50 daily fine runs from the day after expiry. A late extension is decided by GDRFA or ICP; usually the visitor settles the fine and leaves or changes status.

11. Can a visa on arrival be extended?

Often yes. GDRFA and ICP have a service to extend a visa on arrival; the length and fee depend on the nationality.

12. Can the 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa be extended?

Each stay on the 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa is up to 90 days and can be extended once by up to 90 days, with a maximum of 180 days in one year.

13. Which visit visas cannot be extended?

Border-area entry permits, truck driver permits and permits for ship and pleasure-boat crew. Some 90-day multiple-entry visas cannot be extended either.

14. Can my parents stay longer on a visit visa?

Up to 180 days in total. For longer, a parents residence visa needs a salary of AED 10,000, an AED 5,000 refundable deposit and a two-bedroom home.

15. Can my wife or child switch from a visit visa to a family residence visa without leaving the UAE?

Yes. If the sponsor meets the family visa rules, the entry permit is issued with a change of status inside the UAE; an inside-country fee is added.

16. What salary do I need to switch my wife and children to a residence visa?

AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate. The same rule applies in every emirate and for any family size.

17. What if my visitor already has an overstay fine?

If the visitor stays and changes status, the fine is settled with the change of status. If the visitor leaves, the fine is paid together with an exit pass of about AED 450 at the airport.

18. Can a fine above AED 4,000 be waived?

A waiver request is possible when the fine is above AED 4,000. A committee approves or rejects it case by case, so a reduction is never guaranteed.
