Family Visa Job Change in the UAE: What Happens to Your Wife's and Children's Visas When You Change Jobs, the Right Order and the Grace Periods
A family visa job change — when the sponsor moves to a new employer — affects every dependent visa, because the family's visas are linked to the sponsor's residence. In practice the family's visas are cancelled or put on hold before the old employment visa is cancelled, and the family is sponsored again once the new residence is issued. GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates decides which applies. This guide shows the right order, the grace periods and the new salary check of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

💼 What happens to my family's visas when I change jobs in the UAE?
Your wife's, husband's, children's or parents' visas are issued under your residence file. When you change jobs, your old employment visa is cancelled and a new one is issued by the new employer. A dependent visa cannot hang on a cancelled sponsor, and it can never run longer than the sponsor's residence. So the family's visas must move with you.
| Person | What happens | Grace period |
|---|---|---|
| You (the sponsor) | Old employer cancels; new employer issues a new visa | Usually 30 days; up to 180 days for some categories |
| Wife or husband | Cancelled or put on hold, then sponsored again | 59 days after cancellation |
| Children | Cancelled or put on hold, then sponsored again | 59 days after cancellation |
| Parents | Same process; 1-year visa when reissued | 59 days after cancellation |
Does my family's visa end when I resign?
No — resigning does not cancel anything. The visas change only when the cancellation is filed. But the employer will not complete your cancellation until your dependents are dealt with, so plan it with your HR team.
⏸️ Do I have to cancel my family's visas, or can they be put on hold?
Both happen — the authority decides. The usual route is to cancel the dependents' visas and apply again under your new visa. In some cases GDRFA or ICP lets you put the family's visas on hold for a limited period while your new visa is issued, usually against the new employer's offer letter.
| Cancel and reapply | Put on hold | |
|---|---|---|
| When | The usual route | Allowed case by case, usually with an offer letter |
| Cost | AED 85 online or AED 189 at an Amer centre per person, then new visas | The fee shown in the system when you apply |
| Grace period | 59 days for each family member | The hold period set by the authority |
| After your new visa | New family visas, medical test 18+, new Emirates IDs | Hold lifted, visas linked to the new file |
🔢 What is the right order of steps when the sponsor changes jobs?

Why are dependents cancelled before the sponsor?
A dependent must always have a valid sponsor. If the sponsor's visa were cancelled first, the family would be left under a cancelled file. That is why the system blocks the sponsor's cancellation until the family's visas are cancelled or on hold.
Who cancels my family's visas — me or my employer?
You, as the sponsor. Your employer cancels your employment visa, but the dependents' visas are yours. See our visa cancellation guide for the family visa cancellation steps.
⏳ How long can my family stay in the UAE between jobs?

Family members have 59 days after their visas are cancelled. You usually have 30 days after your employment visa is cancelled — up to 180 days for some skilled categories, and longer for Golden and Green Visa holders. After the grace period, the overstay fine is AED 50 a day per person. Our grace period guide explains each case.
What if there is a gap between my two jobs?
Keep the gap shorter than the grace periods. If your new visa will take longer, ask about a hold, move the children to your spouse's sponsorship if she qualifies, or use visit visas. Do not let the family run past 59 days.
What if I lose my job and have no new offer?
Then the family's visas are cancelled with yours, and everyone uses the grace period to find a new job or another visa. Check our self-sponsored visa guide and our ILOE page for unemployment insurance.
🔁 How do I sponsor my family again after changing jobs?
Once your new residence and Emirates ID are issued, you apply for the family under the new file — the same process as a new family visa, done as a change of status inside the UAE. Nobody needs to leave the country.
See how to apply for a UAE family visa and the family visa renewal cost guide for the fees.
Will the new family visa be for 2 years?
Yes, a wife, husband or children get 2 years — but never longer than your own residence. Parents get 1 year.
💰 Does my new salary still qualify for a family visa?
The rule is the same in every emirate: AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate. The total salary counts, and the job title does not matter. Parents need AED 10,000.
| New salary | Wife, husband, children |
|---|---|
| AED 4,000 or more | Qualifies |
| AED 3,000 + accommodation | Qualifies if the accommodation is in the MOHRE salary certificate |
| Below AED 4,000 | Possible only by combining both spouses' salaries — the authority decides |
Read the minimum salary guide and our salary certificate guide.
What documents change after a new job?
Only the sponsor's documents: the new salary certificate or labour contract, the new residence and the new Emirates ID. Outside Dubai a tenancy contract is still needed. The attested family certificates stay the same.
🧩 What about special situations?
Can my spouse sponsor the children instead?
Yes, if she or he meets the salary rule. Moving the children before your cancellation keeps their visas out of the job change.
What if I move from mainland to a free zone?
The visa sponsor changes, so the family follows the same cancel-or-hold process. A move inside the same free zone authority can be simpler. The authority decides.
What if my family is outside the UAE during the job change?
You can still cancel their visas from inside the UAE, at the same fee. They return on a new entry permit once you sponsor them again — see our family entry permit guide.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. What happens to my family visa when I change jobs in the UAE?
Your family's visas are linked to your residence. When your old employment visa is cancelled, the family's visas are either cancelled or put on hold until your new residence is issued. GDRFA in Dubai or ICP in the other emirates decides which applies.
2. Do I have to cancel my family's visas when I change jobs?
In many cases yes, because your own visa cannot be cancelled while dependents are still attached to it. In some cases the authority allows a hold instead, usually with the new employer's offer letter. Ask before you resign.
3. In what order are the visas cancelled?
Dependents first, the sponsor last. Your employer cancels your visa only after your family's visas are cancelled or put on hold.
4. Can I keep my family's visas on hold while I change jobs?
Sometimes. GDRFA or ICP can allow the family's visas to be held for a limited period while your new employment visa is issued, usually against the new employer's offer letter. It is decided case by case.
5. How long can my family stay after their visas are cancelled?
59 days from the cancellation date. In that time they can be sponsored again under your new visa without leaving the UAE.
6. How long do I have to find a new job after my visa is cancelled?
Usually 30 days after an employment visa is cancelled. Some skilled categories get up to 180 days, and Golden and Green Visa holders get longer.
7. Can my family stay if I have no job for a while?
Only within the grace period. After it, they need another visa, such as a visit visa, or another sponsor, or they must leave. The overstay fine is AED 50 a day per person.
8. Do I need to apply for new family visas after changing jobs?
If the visas were cancelled, yes: you apply again under your new residence, as a change of status inside the UAE. If they were put on hold, the hold is lifted once your new visa is issued.
9. What salary do I need to sponsor my family again?
The same rule as before: AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate. If your new salary is lower, you may not qualify.
10. Does a new salary certificate need to be submitted?
Yes. The family application uses your new employer's salary certificate or labour contract and your new residence and Emirates ID.
11. Do my family members need a new medical test?
A new visa usually needs the medical fitness test again for family members aged 18 and over. Children under 18 do not need it.
12. What does cancelling a dependent visa cost?
AED 85 per person online, or AED 189 at an Amer centre. It takes about 48 hours.
13. Do my wife and children have to leave the UAE when I change jobs?
No. The change of status is done inside the UAE. They only have to leave if they are not sponsored again before the 59-day grace period ends.
14. Does changing jobs affect my children's school?
Not if the visas are handled in time. Schools may ask for a valid residence, so keep the gap between cancellation and the new visas short.
15. What if my wife works and can sponsor the children?
If she meets the salary rule, the children can be moved to her sponsorship before your visa is cancelled. Their visas then do not depend on your job change.
16. What happens if my old employer cancels my visa without warning?
Your family's visas must be dealt with before your visa can be cancelled. If your family has already been cancelled, your grace period of usually 30 days and their 59 days start on the cancellation dates.
17. Is a family visa valid longer than the sponsor's visa?
No. A family member's residence cannot run longer than the sponsor's residence.
18. Can I change jobs from mainland to a free zone with a family visa?
Yes, but the visa sponsor changes, so the family's visas follow the same cancel-or-hold process. Moves within the same free zone authority can be simpler. The authority decides.
19. Do I need to renew my family's Emirates IDs after a job change?
If the family's visas are reissued, new Emirates ID cards are issued with the new visas. The same applies to health insurance.
20. Will the family visa still be 2 years after a job change?
Yes, a new family visa is issued for 2 years, but it cannot be longer than your own residence. Parents are issued for 1 year.
21. Can FamilyVisa.ae manage my family's visas during a job change?
