Family Visa Abu Dhabi 2026: Requirements, Cost, Tawtheeq, Health Insurance, Medical Test and Step-by-Step ICP Process
Family visa Abu Dhabi rules in 2026 let a resident whose visa was issued in Abu Dhabi sponsor a wife or husband and children, with a salary of AED 4,000 a month or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. The salary rule is the same as in Dubai, but three things are different: the application goes through ICP, you need a Tawtheeq tenancy contract, and every family member needs health insurance. This guide covers the Abu Dhabi family visa requirements, the cost, the steps, the medical test and Emirates ID, and how Abu Dhabi differs from Dubai.

🏛️ Who handles the family visa in Abu Dhabi?
The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) issues family residence visas for sponsors whose own residence was issued in Abu Dhabi — and in Sharjah and the northern emirates too. Dubai is the only emirate with its own immigration authority, GDRFA. ICP also issues the Emirates ID for everyone, including Dubai residents.
My visa is from a Dubai company but I live in Abu Dhabi. Which rules apply?
The family visa follows the sponsor's residence file, not the address. If your visa was issued in Dubai, your family's visas are issued by GDRFA Dubai — and Dubai does not ask for a tenancy contract for a wife or children. If your visa was issued in Abu Dhabi, ICP applies the Abu Dhabi rules below. Your residence file number shows the emirate: files starting with 101 are Abu Dhabi and 201 are Dubai.
✅ What are the Abu Dhabi family visa requirements?
The core rules are federal, so they are the same as in the rest of the UAE. The extra Abu Dhabi checks are the Tawtheeq tenancy contract and health insurance. See the full UAE family visa rules for the details.
| Requirement | Rule in Abu Dhabi |
|---|---|
| Salary | AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 + accommodation written in the MOHRE salary certificate — any job title |
| Housing | Tenancy contract registered in Tawtheeq, or a title deed if you own the home |
| Health insurance | A Department of Health approved policy for each family member |
| Children | Sons up to 25; daughters at any age while unmarried; special needs without an age limit |
| Documents | Attested marriage and birth certificates, passports, photos, sponsor's Emirates ID |
| Medical test | Family members aged 18 and over, at a SEHA screening centre |
Can I sponsor my family on AED 3,000 in Abu Dhabi?
Yes — if your employer provides accommodation and it is written in your MOHRE salary certificate. Without that, the minimum is AED 4,000. If you earn less, ICP may accept the husband's and wife's salaries combined, but that is an exception the authority decides. See our minimum salary guide.
Which documents do I need for an Abu Dhabi family visa?
You need passports and photos, the sponsor's Emirates ID and salary certificate, attested marriage and birth certificates, the Tawtheeq contract and health insurance. Our family visa documents checklist lists every paper, and the marriage certificate attestation guide explains the embassy and MOFA steps.
🏠 Is a tenancy contract required for a family visa in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. In Abu Dhabi the tenancy contract must be registered in Tawtheeq, the official lease registration system of the Department of Municipalities and Transport. The landlord or property manager registers the contract; the registration fee is usually paid by the landlord. You can see the certificate in the DMT portal with UAE Pass.
Can I get an Abu Dhabi family visa with company accommodation?
If your salary certificate shows AED 3,000 plus accommodation, the employer's housing counts for the salary rule. ICP still looks for a family home: a company-provided flat with a Tawtheeq contract usually works, a shared labour accommodation does not. Ask us before you apply. For Dubai, see our Ejari and tenancy guide.
🩺 Is health insurance mandatory for an Abu Dhabi family visa?
Yes. Under Abu Dhabi's health insurance law the sponsor must insure the wife, husband and children. Many employers cover a spouse and some children; anyone not covered needs an individual policy from a Department of Health approved insurer before the residence is issued. See our family visa health insurance guide.
💰 How much does a family visa cost in Abu Dhabi?
ICP charges base fees for each family member, and the system adds service and smart-service fees on top. The amount shown in the ICP system when you apply is the final reference. The base fees published for ICP services are:

🧭 How do I apply for a family visa in Abu Dhabi?

How long does an Abu Dhabi family visa take?
With a complete file, usually one to two weeks from the entry permit to the Emirates ID. The entry permit itself often comes in about two working days; medical results take 24 to 48 hours. Missing attestation or an unregistered tenancy are the usual delays.
🧪 Where is the medical test and Emirates ID done in Abu Dhabi?
The visa medical test in Abu Dhabi is done at a SEHA Disease Prevention and Screening Centre — in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. It is required for everyone aged 18 and over. Book in the SEHA app with UAE Pass, bring the passport and entry permit, and the result is ready in 24 to 48 hours depending on the service.
After the medical, the family member gives Emirates ID biometrics (fingerprints and photo) at an ICP service centre when asked. See our visa medical in Abu Dhabi guide and our Emirates ID service.
