Family Visa Health Insurance in the UAE 2026: Rules by Emirate, Minimum Cover, Cost for Wife, Children and Parents
Family visa health insurance is a required step for every sponsored family member in the UAE: the wife or husband, each child and each parent needs a valid policy before the residence visa is issued or renewed. If your employer does not insure your family, you as the sponsor buy the policy. Basic plans cost from about AED 320 a year; parents over 60 pay much more. This guide covers the rules by emirate, minimum cover, cost, parents and newborns.

🛡️ Is health insurance required for a UAE family visa?
Yes. The residence of a sponsored family member is linked to a valid health policy. In Dubai, the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) requires every resident to be insured, and the sponsor is responsible for the dependents. In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Health (DOH) has the same principle. Since 1 January 2025, a basic plan must be bought before a residence permit is issued or renewed for private-sector workers and domestic workers in every emirate, and dependents can join the same plan. In Sharjah and the northern emirates, the policy is checked in the ICP system for many dependent visas.
Is the visa medical test the same as health insurance?
No. The medical fitness test is a screening for the residence, done in the UAE for family members aged 18 and over. Health insurance pays for treatment, and it is needed for everyone, children included. See our visa medical result check and the medical and Emirates ID centres near you.
💳 Who pays for dependent visa health insurance?
The sponsor — unless the employer already covers the family. Employers must insure their employees, but many company plans cover only the employee. If your plan does not list your wife and children, you buy their dependent health insurance yourself.
| Family member | Dubai | Abu Dhabi | Other emirates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee (sponsor) | Employer | Employer | Employer (basic plan since 2025) |
| Wife or husband | Sponsor, unless the company plan includes family | Employer often covers one spouse | Sponsor, same basic plan possible |
| Children | Sponsor, unless the company plan includes family | Employer often covers up to 3 children under 18 | Sponsor |
| Parents | Sponsor | Sponsor | Sponsor |

What is basic health insurance in Dubai for a family visa?
For a Dubai residence visa the policy must come from a DHA-approved insurer. The minimum is the essential benefits plan (EBP), the basic health insurance Dubai sets for lower earners, with an annual limit of about AED 150,000 inside the network. It includes inpatient and outpatient care, emergencies and maternity. Any approved policy with equal or better cover is accepted. Dubai can fine a sponsor about AED 500 a month for each uninsured family member.
What health insurance is needed for an Abu Dhabi residence visa?
For a health insurance Abu Dhabi residence visa you need a DOH-approved policy — for example from Daman or another licensed insurer. Employees earning under about AED 5,000 a month (or AED 4,000 plus housing) get the basic product, and employers often cover one spouse and up to three children under 18. Thiqa is for UAE nationals and some eligible groups, not for expatriate families. More on Abu Dhabi in our Abu Dhabi family visa guide.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. Is health insurance required for a UAE family visa?
Yes. Each sponsored family member needs a valid health insurance policy before the residence visa is issued or renewed. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi this has been the rule for years; in Sharjah and the northern emirates the basic plan has been linked to residence permits since 1 January 2025 and the policy is checked in the ICP system for many dependent visas.
2. Who pays for my family's health insurance?
The sponsor, unless the employer's policy already covers the family. Many employers insure only the employee. In Abu Dhabi, employers often cover one spouse and up to three children under 18. Parents are almost always the sponsor's responsibility.
3. What is the minimum health insurance for a family visa in Dubai?
A DHA-approved policy at least equal to the Essential Benefits Plan (the basic plan), with an annual limit of about AED 150,000 inside the UAE network. Any approved policy with equal or better cover is accepted.
4. How much does basic health insurance in Dubai cost for a dependent?
For an adult under 60, a basic plan usually costs about AED 550 to AED 750 a year plus VAT. Children are often in the same range. The insurer's quote is final and depends on age and health.
5. How much is the basic health insurance in Sharjah and the northern emirates?
The basic plan introduced on 1 January 2025 costs about AED 320 a year per person. Dependents can join with the same benefits and price. It covers ages 1 to 64; older people need a medical disclosure and reports.
6. Do I need health insurance for my parents' visa?
Yes. Parents need their own valid policy for the 1-year parents' visa, along with the AED 10,000 salary, the AED 5,000 refundable deposit and a two-bedroom home. Most employers do not cover parents, so the sponsor buys the policy.
7. What is the cheapest health insurance for parents in Dubai?
A basic plan from a DHA-approved insurer. For parents over 60 it often starts from about AED 4,500 a year and goes up with age and pre-existing conditions. Comprehensive plans cost much more.
8. Does health insurance cover pre-existing conditions for parents?
Basic plans in Dubai and the federal basic plan must accept pre-existing conditions, usually with conditions set by the insurer. The insurer may ask for medical reports and set a higher premium. Read the policy before you pay.
9. Is the visa medical test the same as health insurance?
No. The medical fitness test is a screening for the residence visa, done in the UAE for family members aged 18 and over. Health insurance pays for treatment. A family visa needs both: the test for adults and insurance for everyone.
10. Does my newborn baby need health insurance?
Yes. In Dubai a newborn is usually covered under the mother's policy for a short period, often about 30 days, and must then be added to a policy. The baby needs insurance before the residence visa is issued.
11. Does the basic plan cover pregnancy and childbirth?
The Dubai basic plan includes maternity benefits. The federal basic plan used in the northern emirates excludes pregnancy and childbirth, so a pregnant wife needs a plan with maternity cover.
12. How long must the health insurance be valid?
For the visa period. Most policies run for 1 year, while a family visa lasts 2 years, so renew the policy every year without a gap. The federal basic plan is sold for 2 years.
13. What is the fine for no health insurance in Dubai?
Dubai can fine sponsors about AED 500 a month for each uninsured family member, and an expired policy can block the residence renewal.
14. Can I use my home country health insurance for a UAE family visa?
No. The policy must come from an insurer approved by DHA in Dubai, DOH in Abu Dhabi, or an accredited UAE insurer in the other emirates. Travel insurance and foreign policies are not accepted for residence.
15. What happens to the health insurance after visa cancellation?
The policy usually ends with the residence, or you cancel it with the insurer. Some insurers refund the unused part, and the second-year premium of the federal basic plan is refundable if the visa is cancelled.
16. Can my wife be added to my company health insurance?
Often yes. Ask HR whether the company plan allows dependents and whether the cost is deducted from your salary. If not, buy a separate policy for her.
17. Do Golden Visa families need health insurance?
Yes. Golden Visa holders and their family members also need valid health insurance for the residence, renewed every year.
18. Does Thiqa cover expatriate family members?
No. Thiqa is the Abu Dhabi programme for UAE nationals and some eligible groups. Expatriate families use a DOH-approved policy, for example the basic plan or an enhanced plan.
19. Does health insurance need to be in the same emirate as the visa?
Yes. Buy a policy approved for the emirate that issues the visa: DHA for a Dubai visa, DOH for an Abu Dhabi visa, and an accredited policy for visas from Sharjah and the other emirates.
20. Can FamilyVisa.ae arrange the health insurance with the visa?
Yes. We check which policy your emirate accepts, arrange basic or better cover for each family member and apply for the visa in one process. Send us the ages and the emirate on WhatsApp.
