UAE Residence Visa Processing Time 2026: How Long the Entry Permit, Medical, Emirates ID and Residence Take, by Visa Type
The UAE residence visa processing time for a family member is usually about 5 to 10 working days in Dubai and 1 to 3 weeks in the other emirates, when the documents are complete. The entry permit takes about 48 hours, the medical result from 30 minutes to 48 hours, the residence approval a few working days, and the Emirates ID card follows about 5 to 10 working days later. This guide gives a timeline for each stage and each visa type, the reasons for delays and the ways to move faster.

⏱️ How long does a UAE residence visa take in 2026?
For a wife, husband or children with complete, attested documents, the family visa processing time is usually about 5 to 10 working days in Dubai and 1 to 3 weeks in the other emirates. Applications are counted in working days, so weekends and public holidays add time. Every visa goes through the same three stages, whether your family is outside the UAE or already inside on a visit visa.
🗓️ What is the timeline for each stage of the residence visa?

| Stage | Dubai (GDRFA) | Other emirates (ICP) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Entry permit | About 48 hours | About 2–5 days | Valid 60 days to enter |
| Change of status (if inside) | Same day – 2 days | About 1–3 days | No need to leave the UAE |
| 2. Medical test (18+) | 30 min – 48 hours | Same day – 48 hours | Normal, express or VIP |
| Emirates ID biometrics | Same day – a few days | Same day – a few days | Depends on appointments |
| 3. Residence approval | About 2–5 days | About 3–7 days | No passport sticker since 2022 |
| Emirates ID card | About 5–10 days | About 5–10 days | Digital ID often earlier |
Do the stages run one after another?
Mostly yes. The entry permit comes first. The medical test and the Emirates ID biometrics can be done on the same day once the family member is in the UAE with the permit. The residence is approved after both are complete, and the card is printed after the residence.
👪 How long does each type of residence visa take?

| Visa type | Typical processing time | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wife or husband, children — Dubai | About 5–10 working days | Fast online process; no tenancy contract for wife and children |
| Wife or husband, children — other emirates | About 1–3 weeks | ICP process; tenancy contract checked |
| Parents | About 2–4 weeks | AED 10,000 salary, AED 5,000 deposit, two-bedroom home checked closely |
| Siblings, in-laws, stepchildren | Several weeks, case by case | Special approval and many documents |
| Newborn | About 1–2 weeks | After the birth certificate and passport; no medical test |
| Family visa renewal | About 3–7 working days | Same documents; no entry permit needed |
| Golden Visa (with family) | About 1–4 weeks after eligibility | Depends on category and emirate |
| Employment visa | About 2–4 weeks | MOHRE work permit plus immigration |
Why does a parents' visa take longer?
Parents have stricter rules: a salary of AED 10,000, a refundable deposit of AED 5,000, a two-bedroom home and their own health insurance. The authority checks these closely, so allow about 2 to 4 weeks. The visa is issued for 1 year. See our parents visa guide.
How long does a family visa renewal take?
Usually 3 to 7 working days, because no entry permit is needed. Start about 30 days before expiry. Costs are in our family visa renewal cost guide.
📄 How long does the family entry permit take?
GDRFA Dubai gives an expected time of 48 hours for a family entry permit, and some are approved the same day. Through ICP in the other emirates, allow about 2 to 5 working days. The sponsor needs a salary of AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, and attested marriage and birth certificates. Details in our family entry permit guide.
How long is the entry permit valid?
Usually 60 days to enter the UAE. After entry, the family member has 60 days to finish the medical test, Emirates ID and residence. The permit cannot be extended; after the permitted period, fines of AED 50 a day apply.
Is it faster to apply from inside the UAE?
Often yes. A family member on a visit visa can change status inside the UAE, usually within a day or two, and go straight to the medical and biometrics. An extra in-country fee applies; the amount is shown in the system when you apply.
🩺 How long does the visa medical test take?
Only family members aged 18 and over take the medical fitness test. The visit itself takes less than an hour; the result depends on the package you choose.
| Medical package | Typical result time |
|---|---|
| Normal | 24 – 48 hours |
| Express | About 6 – 24 hours |
| VIP | About 1 – 2 hours, or same day |
| Fast smart centres (Dubai) | About 30 – 60 minutes |
A retest (for example after an unclear X-ray) adds a few days. Check the result in our visa medical result check guide and find a centre on the medical and Emirates ID locations page.
🪪 What is the Emirates ID processing time?
ICP issues the Emirates ID for every emirate, including Dubai. After the biometrics and the residence approval, the card is usually printed and delivered in about 5 to 10 working days, sometimes up to two weeks in busy periods. The digital Emirates ID in the UAE Pass or ICP app often appears earlier and can be used as proof of identity while you wait.
To follow the card, see our Emirates ID status check guide or call the ICP call centre on 600 522 222. A lost card can be replaced urgently in about 24 hours for AED 150 extra — see Emirates ID replacement.
⚠️ What causes delays in a UAE residence visa?
What does "returned for modification" mean?
The authority has sent the application back for a correction or a missing document. The clock effectively stops until you reply. Fix it the same day if you can; a quick reply often saves several days.
Can a visa application be rejected?
Yes. A rejection usually means a rule is not met — salary, relationship proof, housing outside Dubai or a security issue. Read our family visa rejection reasons before you reapply.
⚡ How can I speed up the residence visa process?
How do I check my residence visa status?
On the GDRFA website or app for Dubai visas, or on ICP smart services for the other emirates, with the application number, file number or passport details. See check visa status UAE and our residence visa file number guide.

5. How long does the medical test result take?

7. Is there still a residence visa sticker in the passport?
No. Since April 2022 the residence is no longer stamped in the passport. The Emirates ID is the proof of residence, and the visa details can be seen online on GDRFA or ICP.
8. How long does a change of status take inside the UAE?
Usually the same day to about 2 working days, together with the entry permit. The family member then continues with the medical test, Emirates ID and residence without leaving the country.
9. How long does a parents' visa take?
Usually about 2 to 4 weeks, because the application is checked more closely: AED 10,000 salary, AED 5,000 refundable deposit, two-bedroom home and health insurance. The parents' visa is issued for 1 year.
10. How long does a family visa renewal take?

13. Why is my residence visa application taking so long?
Common reasons are missing or unattested documents, a name that does not match across documents, a salary below AED 4,000, an old visa not yet cancelled, an unpaid fine, a medical retest, or an extra security check. The authority may also return the application for changes.
14. Can I speed up the residence visa?
Yes, partly. Prepare attested documents before you apply, choose an express or VIP medical, book the Emirates ID biometrics at once and reply quickly when the application is returned. The approval time itself is decided by GDRFA or ICP.
15. Do public holidays affect the processing time?
Yes. Processing times are counted in working days. Applications submitted before a weekend or a public holiday such as Eid usually move after the break.

Online on the GDRFA website or app for Dubai visas, or on ICP smart services for the other emirates, using the application number, the file number or the passport details.
17. Can my family travel while the residence is in process?
Usually not without risk. If a family member leaves before the residence is issued, the entry permit or change of status can be cancelled and you may have to start again. Wait for the residence approval before travelling.
18. What happens if the 60 days after entry run out?
Fines start after the permitted period, AED 50 a day. Complete the medical test, Emirates ID and residence within 60 days of entry to avoid them.
19. Does the sponsor's visa affect the family visa time?
Yes. The sponsor's own residence must be valid, and if it expires soon the family visa may be delayed or issued only to match it. Renew the sponsor's visa first if it is close to expiry.
20. Is the processing time the same in every emirate?
No. Dubai visas go through GDRFA Dubai and are often fastest; the other emirates go through ICP and usually take a few days longer. The documents and the salary rule are the same.
21. Can FamilyVisa.ae track and speed up my application?
Yes. We check the documents before you apply, book the medical and biometrics, follow the application with GDRFA or ICP and tell you on WhatsApp at each stage.
