📊 What is the difference between the Golden, Green and Blue visa?
All three remove the need for an employer or a relative as your sponsor: you sponsor yourself. The difference is who qualifies, how long the visa lasts and how far it stretches to your family. Here is the side-by-side view:
| Golden Visa | Green Visa | Blue Visa | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | Property owners, investors, company owners, senior managers, nominated talents, top students | Skilled employees, freelancers, investors and partners | Environmental experts, researchers, award winners, green investors and innovators |
| Duration | 10 years (some routes 5 years) | 5 years | 10 years |
| Key condition | AED 2 million property or deposit, or AED 30,000 basic salary as a manager | AED 15,000 salary + degree, or freelance income | Proven environmental work; usually a nomination |
| Sponsor | Yourself | Yourself | Yourself |
| Family sponsorship | Spouse, children, parents | Announced — not applied in practice yet | Spouse, children, parents (ICP) |
| Six months abroad | Exempt — no six-month rule | Normal residence rules | Long-term residence (check with ICP) |
| Government cost (main applicant) | About AED 4,137; AED 9,421 on the property route | System amount for a 5-year residence | AED 350 nomination + system amount |
| Grace period after cancellation | Up to 180 days | Up to 180 days | Decided by ICP |
🥇 Who qualifies for the UAE Golden Visa?
The main Golden Visa routes:
💚 Who qualifies for the Green Visa?
The Green Visa is a 5-year self-sponsored residence with three routes:

| Green Visa route | Main conditions |
|---|---|
| Skilled employee | Valid employment contract, job in MOHRE skill level 1, 2 or 3, bachelor's degree or higher, monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 |
| Freelancer / self-employed | Freelance or self-employment permit from MOHRE, bachelor's degree or specialised diploma, annual income of at least AED 360,000 for the previous two years — or proof of financial solvency |
| Investor or partner | Approval of the investment and proof of the investment or partnership in a UAE company |
Can I sponsor my family on a Green Visa?
Family sponsorship for Green Visa and freelance visa holders has been announced, but it is not applied in practice yet. If family is your priority, look at the Golden Visa, the 2-year property investor visa or the normal family visa rules.
💙 Who qualifies for the Blue Visa (Blue Residency)?
The Blue Visa is the newest of the three: a 10-year renewable residence for people who have made an exceptional contribution to protecting the environment, inside or outside the UAE. ICP lists five groups:
How do I apply for the Blue Visa?
You either apply yourself on the ICP smart services platform or are nominated by a competent UAE authority. The nomination request costs AED 350; once ICP approves it, that approval works as the initial approval of the visa. Applicants outside the UAE then take a six-month multiple-entry permit (about AED 1,250) to come in and complete the medical test, Emirates ID and residence. All applicants need a passport valid for at least six months, a photo, health insurance and the medical fitness test.
👪 Which visa lets me sponsor my family?
This is where the three visas differ most in practice:
| Family member | Golden Visa | Green Visa | Blue Visa |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spouse | ✅ Same validity as you | Not applied in practice yet | ✅ 10 years |
| Children | ✅ Sons and daughters, regardless of age | Not applied in practice yet | ✅ Regardless of age |
| Parents | ✅ Yes | Not applied in practice yet | ✅ Yes |
| Domestic workers | ✅ 2-year maid visa possible | — | ✅ Yes |
| If the holder dies | Family keeps the residence until it expires | — | Family keeps the residence for its full term |
On the Golden Visa, each adult dependent pays the same government fee as the holder, AED 4,137, and each child under 18 pays AED 3,864 (no medical test); a new family file is AED 283 once. Read the full rules in Golden Visa for family dependents.
Can I sponsor my parents on a Golden Visa without the AED 10,000 salary rule?
Yes. The normal parents visa needs AED 10,000 salary, a AED 5,000 deposit and a two-bedroom home, renewed yearly. On the Golden Visa, parents are dependents for the same long validity.
💰 How much does each visa cost?
The investment itself (property, deposit or capital) is not a fee. The government fees for the main applicant are:

Golden Visa fees as paid by FamilyVisa.ae on 15 October 2026; insurance and attestation are extra; the ICP or GDRFA system amount is final. Full breakdown: Golden Visa cost.
🔄 What changed? Old rules vs 2026
| Topic | Before | Now (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Property visa threshold | AED 750,000 minimum for a property investor visa | Any value → 2-year property investor visa; AED 2 million → 10-year Golden Visa |
| Mortgaged / off-plan property | Often refused for the Golden Visa | Accepted (mortgage needs a bank NOC) |
| Self-sponsored 5-year visa | Not available for employees and freelancers | Green Visa (5 years) |
| Environmental experts | No dedicated visa | Blue Visa (10 years, nomination via ICP) |
| Parents on a normal family visa | About AED 20,000 salary | AED 10,000 salary + AED 5,000 deposit + 2BHK; or include them in a Golden Visa |
✈️ Time abroad, grace period and renewal: how do they compare?
Can I stay outside the UAE for more than six months?
A normal residence lapses after more than 180 days abroad in a row. Golden Visa holders are exempt. The Green Visa follows the normal rules; for the Blue Visa, confirm with ICP before a long absence.
What is the grace period after cancellation?
Golden and Green Visa holders get a longer grace period than employees — up to 180 days to leave or move to another visa. After the grace period the overstay fine is AED 50 a day. More in our visa grace period guide.
Are these visas renewable?
Yes — all three are renewed if you still meet the condition of your route at renewal time: the property or deposit, the salary, the freelance income or the environmental activity. See Golden Visa renewal for the steps.

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. What is the difference between the Golden, Green and Blue visa?
All three are self-sponsored UAE residence visas. Golden: usually 10 years for property owners, investors, managers and talents. Green: 5 years for skilled employees, freelancers and investors. Blue: 10 years for people with proven environmental work.
2. Which is better, the Golden Visa or the Blue Visa?
Both last 10 years and cover the spouse, children and parents. The better one is the one you qualify for: Golden for property, investment, salary or talent; Blue for proven environmental work. ICP lets a Golden holder who meets the Blue criteria convert.
3. How long is the Green Visa valid?
5 years. It is renewed if you still meet the same condition — the salary, the freelance income or the investment.
4. What salary do I need for a Green Visa?
For the skilled employee route, a monthly salary of at least AED 15,000, a bachelor's degree or higher and a job in MOHRE skill level 1, 2 or 3, under a valid employment contract.
5. Can freelancers get a Green Visa?
Yes. You need a freelance or self-employment permit from MOHRE, a bachelor's degree or a specialised diploma, and annual income of at least AED 360,000 over the previous two years, or proof of financial solvency.
6. Can I sponsor my family on a Green Visa?
Family sponsorship for Green Visa and freelance visa holders has been announced, but it is not applied in practice yet. If family is your priority, look at the Golden Visa, the property investor visa or a normal family visa first.
7. Can I sponsor my parents on a Golden Visa?
Yes. A Golden Visa holder can sponsor the spouse, children and parents, usually for the same 10 years as the holder. Each adult dependent pays the same government fee as an adult on the Golden Visa, AED 4,137.
8. How much does the Golden Visa cost?
About AED 4,137 in government fees for the main applicant on most routes, and AED 9,421 on the property route. Each adult dependent is AED 4,137 and each child under 18 is AED 3,864. The system amount when you apply is final.
9. How much does the Green Visa cost?
The amount shown in the ICP or GDRFA system when you apply, plus the medical test, Emirates ID and health insurance. It is usually lower than a 10-year Golden Visa because it runs for 5 years.
10. How much does the Blue Visa cost?
A nomination request of AED 350, about AED 1,250 for the six-month entry permit if you are abroad, then the residence fee, medical and Emirates ID in the ICP system.
11. Who can get the Blue Visa?
People with an exceptional contribution to the environment and sustainability: members of environmental organisations, award winners, scientists, clean-energy inventors, green investors and environmental specialists. Many need a nomination.
12. Can I get a Golden Visa with property?
Yes. Property of AED 2 million or more, alone or combined, gives a 10-year Golden Visa. Off-plan and mortgaged property is accepted; a mortgaged property needs a bank NOC.
13. What if my property is worth less than AED 2 million?
Property of any value now gives the 2-year property investor visa, which also lets you sponsor your family. If you are 55 or older and own property of AED 1 million, you can apply for the 5-year retirement visa.
14. Can a manager get the Golden Visa by salary?
Yes, with an AED 30,000 basic salary in the MOHRE contract for more than 2 years in the same company, a company with more than 20 employees, a graduate degree or higher and a designation of manager or above.
15. Can I stay outside the UAE for more than six months on these visas?
Golden Visa holders are exempt from the six-month rule. The Green Visa follows normal residence rules, so long stays abroad can affect it.
16. What is the grace period after a Golden or Green Visa is cancelled?
Longer than for employees — up to 180 days to leave or move to a new visa. After the grace period the overstay fine is AED 50 a day.
17. Do I need an employer to sponsor a Golden, Green or Blue visa?
No. All three are self-sponsored. You can change jobs or work for yourself without losing the visa, as long as you still meet the condition of your route.
18. Can I switch from a Green Visa to a Golden Visa?
Yes, when you meet a Golden Visa route — for example after buying property of AED 2 million or reaching the manager salary rule. You apply for the Golden Visa and the old residence is replaced.
19. Are the Golden, Green and Blue visas renewable?
Yes. Each one is renewed if you still meet the condition of your route at renewal time. The medical test and Emirates ID are done again.
20. Which visa should I choose?
Property or a deposit of AED 2 million points to the Golden Visa; a high salary or freelance income to the Green Visa unless you meet the Golden manager rule; proven environmental work to the Blue Visa. Want your family with you now? Prefer the Golden Visa.
