Golden Visa for Teachers in the UAE 2026: Who Qualifies, KHDA Nomination, Documents, Steps, Cost and Family Sponsorship
The Golden Visa for teachers gives outstanding educators in Dubai's private schools, nurseries and universities a 10-year renewable residence, without an employer sponsor. It is not open to direct applications: your school nominates you, KHDA selects, and GDRFA issues the visa. Nominations run once a year, from mid-October to mid-December. This guide explains who qualifies, the documents, the steps, the cost, how to bring your family, and the other Golden Visa routes for teachers who are not nominated. For all categories, see our Golden Visa page.

🎓 What is the Golden Visa for teachers?
It is a Dubai programme launched on World Teachers' Day, 5 October 2024, under the directive of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai. It rewards high-performing educators in the private sector with the same 10-year Golden Visa that investors and talents receive. People searching "golden visa teachers Dubai" usually mean this KHDA scheme.
How many teachers have received it?
In the first round, KHDA received 435 applications and awarded 223 Golden Visas (about 51%): 157 to school staff, 60 to university staff and 6 to early childhood staff. By October 2026 more than 835 educators had applied since launch.

✅ Who qualifies for the Golden Visa for teachers?
Do private-school teachers qualify?
Yes — the scheme is built for them. Any teacher in a KHDA-regulated private school, nursery or university can be nominated, whatever the nationality. Nationality, gender and years of experience were deliberately left out of the criteria.
Is there a minimum salary or years of experience?
No. Unlike the salary route, the teacher scheme looks at results and impact, not salary or years of service.
📋 What are the criteria for teachers and principals?
| Role | What KHDA looks for |
|---|---|
| Teachers (schools, ECCs) | Nomination by the principal with board of governors' endorsement; student success in internal and external exams; positive feedback from students, parents and leaders; progress of Emirati students and students of determination; awards or fellowships; community contribution |
| University faculty | Advanced degree or professional qualification; research, publications, grants or creative work; plus the teacher criteria |
| Principals | School inspection (DSIB) rating raised to Good or better, or kept there; better student outcomes; positive staff and parent feedback; formal board nomination |
| ECC managers, academic heads | Similar leadership criteria; academic heads also need an advanced degree and research |
📂 What documents does a teacher need?
Colour scans are accepted at the KHDA stage; originals can be requested later. After KHDA approval, the GDRFA Golden Visa application needs your passport, photo, current residence or entry details, and later the medical test and Emirates ID biometrics.
Do my degree certificates need attestation?
Degrees used for a UAE visa or a teaching licence are normally attested (home country, UAE embassy, MOFA). Most teachers already did this for the KHDA licence. If not, see our attestation service.
🧭 Who nominates teachers, and what are the steps?
Teachers cannot apply alone. The school, nursery or university forms an internal committee, reviews its staff and sends the nominations to KHDA during the window.

When is the 2026 nomination window?
The past rounds ran from 15 October to 15 December, and KHDA describes the window as mid-October to mid-December every year. Check the exact 2026 dates with your school or on the KHDA website before you prepare your file.
Can I appeal if my nomination is rejected?
No. Rejected applications cannot be appealed or reconsidered in the same round. You can be nominated again in a later round with a stronger file, or use another route.
What if my current visa expires during the process?
Renew your current residence on time. Do not let it lapse while you wait for KHDA — an overstay costs AED 50 a day.
💰 How much does the teacher Golden Visa cost?
KHDA only nominates; it does not charge for the selection. The Golden Visa itself is issued by GDRFA, so you pay the normal Golden Visa government fees — entry permit or change of status, medical test, Emirates ID and residence. The teacher pays unless the school agrees to cover it. The full breakdown is in our Golden Visa cost guide; the amount shown in the GDRFA system when you apply is final.
| Item | Who pays |
|---|---|
| KHDA nomination and review | No charge to the teacher |
| GDRFA Golden Visa fees (permit, medical, Emirates ID, residence) | Teacher — or the school, if it agrees |
| Family visas on your Golden Visa | Teacher |
Is it cheaper to apply myself online or through an Amer centre?
Applying yourself through GDRFA with UAE Pass costs only the government fees; an Amer centre adds its typing charges on each item.
👨👩👧 Does the teacher Golden Visa cover my family?
Yes. Once your Golden Visa is issued, you can sponsor your spouse and children for the same period, up to 10 years. Golden Visa holders can also sponsor parents for up to 10 years with an AED 5,000 refundable deposit, and domestic workers on a 2-year visa. See Golden Visa benefits and the Golden Visa for family dependents guide.
I am on my husband's visa. Can I still get the teacher Golden Visa?
Yes, if you hold a KHDA teaching licence and your school nominates you. Once approved, you hold your own residence and can even sponsor your family yourself.
🛤️ What if I am not nominated or teach outside Dubai?
The KHDA scheme is not the only door. Teachers can also qualify through the general Golden Visa routes:
Is there a Golden Visa for teachers in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?
We have not seen a dedicated teacher nomination scheme from Abu Dhabi or Sharjah like the KHDA one. Teachers there use the general routes above. For a family in Sharjah, see family Golden Visa in Sharjah.
🕰️ Old rules vs 2026: what changed for teachers?
| Rule | Before | Now |

| Teacher route | No dedicated route before October 2024 | KHDA nomination every year in Dubai |
| Ras Al Khaimah | No teacher route | RAK Department of Knowledge route since November 2024 |
