UAE Re-entry Permit (2026): Who Needs It After 6 Months Abroad, How to Apply Through ICP or GDRFA Dubai, Fees, Documents and Exemptions
A UAE re-entry permit lets a resident who has stayed outside the country for more than 180 days come back on the same residence visa, as long as that visa is still valid. Without it, the residence is treated as void and airlines may refuse boarding. ICP calls the service an entry permit for residents outside the UAE for more than six months; GDRFA Dubai calls it a return permit. This guide explains who needs it, who is exempt, the documents, the steps on ICP and GDRFA, the fees (AED 100 for every 30 days abroad on ICP), how long it takes, and what to do if the visa has already expired.

📄 What is a UAE re-entry permit, and when does it apply?
Under the general rule on u.ae, a residence visa is nullified automatically when its holder stays outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row. The re-entry permit reverses that for people who had a good reason to stay away — study, work, medical treatment or a family emergency — and whose residence is still within its validity dates.
Is the re-entry permit the same as the return permit?
Yes, it is the same idea under different names. ICP lists it under "Residents outside the UAE" on its smart services. GDRFA Dubai lists it as "Return permit for resident outside UAE more than 6 months". Amer and typing centres often say "re-entry permit".
📜 Old rules vs 2026: how has the re-entry permit changed?
| Topic | Before | Now (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| More than 6 months abroad | Before 2023: residence lost, start a new visa | Re-entry permit from abroad keeps the same residence (ICP since 2023; GDRFA Dubai return permit) |
| Approval to return at all | 2020–2021 (COVID-19): every resident needed ICA or GDRFA approval to fly back | No approval needed for a valid residence with less than 6 months abroad |
| Residence expired abroad | Temporary return allowed for visas that expired 28 Feb – 31 Mar 2026; final grace until 9 July 2026 | Ended. A new entry permit is needed |
| Golden and Green Visa | — | No six-month limit while the visa is valid |
👥 Who needs a UAE re-entry permit?
Any resident on an ordinary residence visa who has been outside the UAE for more than 180 days in a row:
Can the sponsor apply for the family?
Yes. ICP accepts the application from the resident or from the sponsor or establishment. For a family visa, the sponsor in the UAE usually applies for the wife, husband or children, uploads the proof and pays. The family member then flies in with the approval.
🟢 Who does not need a re-entry permit?
The government lists groups that can stay outside the UAE for more than six months without losing a valid residence:
| Group | Notes |
|---|---|
| Golden Visa holders and their families | No six-month limit while valid |
| Green Visa holders | No six-month limit while valid |
| Foreign wives of Emirati citizens | Exempt |
| Students at institutions abroad | With proof of enrolment; check ICP for your emirate |
| Residents sent abroad for treatment, and companions | With a medical report approved by UAE health authorities |
| Public-sector employees on training or posted abroad, and families | Exempt |
| Investors with a valid residence | Listed as exempt |
| Staff of UAE diplomatic missions and their sponsored dependents | Exempt |

How do I apply for a Dubai residence visa (GDRFA)?
Dubai residence holders cannot use the ICP service. They apply to GDRFA Dubai:
💰 How much does the UAE re-entry permit cost?
On ICP, the cost has two parts: AED 100 for every 30 days (or part) spent outside the UAE, and service fees of about AED 150 (AED 28 e-service, AED 22 ICP fee and AED 100 smart service fee). GDRFA Dubai shows its fee during the application. The amount in the system when you pay is final.

Fees as published on 15 October 2026; GDRFA or ICP may change them, and the amount shown at submission is the final reference.
Is the money refunded if the permit is rejected?
ICP refunds the charge for the time abroad only if the request is rejected. The service fees are not refunded.
⏱️ How long does the re-entry permit take, and how long is it valid?
GDRFA Dubai usually processes the return permit in about 2 working days; ICP does not publish a fixed time, and requests with weak proof take longer. Once approved:
❌ What if the re-entry permit is rejected?
The usual reasons are a weak or missing reason, too little validity left, or a residence that has already expired. The options are:
⛔ What if the residence visa has already expired abroad?
Then the re-entry permit is not the answer. The 2026 permission for residents whose visas expired abroad ended on 9 July 2026, and the standard rule applies: the sponsor cancels the expired residence and applies for a new entry permit. Our guide residence visa expired outside the UAE explains each route, and the family entry permit guide covers the new visa.
Can I renew my residence from abroad to avoid the problem?
Usually not: renewal needs the medical test (18 and over) and Emirates ID biometrics inside the UAE. If a long trip is planned, renew before leaving — u.ae notes that renewing one to six months early for travel needs ICP permission. See the family visa renewal cost guide.
