Absconding Domestic Worker in Dubai and the UAE (2026): What Sponsors Must Do — When to Report, How to File, Liabilities, and Cancelling the Visa
An absconding domestic worker is a maid, nanny, driver or other household worker who has left work without notice and cannot be reached. If the absence lasts more than 7 days, the sponsor can file an absconding report — with GDRFA in Dubai, or with MOHRE in the other emirates (MOHRE lists a fee of AED 315). ICP checks the report, usually within about 2 working days. This guide explains what to do first, when and where to report, the documents, your liabilities as a sponsor, how to cancel the worker's visa, and how to withdraw a report if she comes back.

❓ What counts as absconding for a domestic worker?
For MOHRE, a domestic worker has absconded when she has been absent from work for more than 7 days, you do not know where she is, and you cannot contact her. A worker who is on approved leave, in hospital, held by the police, or who has told you she is resigning has not absconded — those cases follow other procedures.
Is a worker who resigns with notice absconding?
No. Under the domestic workers law (Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022) the worker can end the contract in set cases — for example when the employer does not pay the salary. That is a contract matter to settle with MOHRE, not an absconding case.
📞 What should I do first when my maid leaves without notice?
📅 When can I file an absconding report?
When the worker has been absent for more than 7 days, according to MOHRE's service page for domestic workers. Some guides still mention 5 days; the authority's system decides, so if you are unsure, check with us before filing. Do not wait too long either: the report protects you, and the sooner it is on record, the clearer your position.
Is there a deadline for the sponsor to report?
MOHRE does not publish a fixed deadline on the service page. In practice, report soon after the 7 days have passed — a late report makes it harder to show when she actually stopped working, and the worker's visa stays on your file in the meantime.
🏛️ Where do I report an absconding domestic worker: Dubai vs other emirates?

| Dubai | Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates | |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | GDRFA Dubai | MOHRE, verified by ICP |
| Where | An Amer centre or GDRFA customer happiness centres | MOHRE app or website (UAE Pass), MOHRE business centres, Tawseel |

🪜 How do I file an absconding report? Step by step

📂 What documents do I need for an absconding report?
🏢 What if my maid is from Tadbeer or an agency?
If the maid is on a Tadbeer centre's visa, the centre is her sponsor, so the centre reports the absence and handles her visa. Tell the centre the same day and stop the next salary payment until it is clear. If you sponsored her yourself but hired through a licensed agency, you report — and then ask the agency about a replacement or a refund. Read more in our Tadbeer maid visa guide.
Can I get the recruitment fee back if my maid absconds?
Often, yes. Under MOHRE's rules, licensed centres and agencies must replace the worker or refund the recruitment fee when she leaves work without a valid reason. Within the 6-month probation the refund can be full in set cases; after it, the refund is pro-rata — the total recruitment cost divided by the contract months, multiplied by the months left. Keep the absconding report: the agency will ask for it.
⚖️ What are my liabilities as a sponsor?
Am I responsible for her overstay fine?
After a valid absconding report, the worker is responsible for her own status. Without a report, the visa stays on your file and questions about fines (overstay is AED 50 a day) come back to you. That is the main reason to report.
Can I sponsor a new maid after an absconding case?
Usually yes, once the report is approved and the absconding worker's visa no longer blocks your file. With Tadbeer, ask the centre for a replacement. Message us before you start, and we will check your file.
✂️ How do I cancel an absconding worker's visa?
It depends on where she is and whether she can be reached:
🔄 Can I withdraw an absconding report if my maid comes back?
Yes. MOHRE has a withdrawal service for employers. A report can be cancelled when:
Can the worker cancel the report herself?
Since September 2024 a domestic worker can apply to MOHRE to cancel an absconding report; MOHRE checks the complaint. If the two sides cannot settle, the case can go to court.
How do I check an absconding status?
Through the MOHRE app with UAE Pass, the GDRFA Dubai app or website for Dubai visas, or the ICP website. The MOHRE call centre is 600 590 000.
🗓️ What changed? Old rules vs 2026
| Rule | Before | Now (2026) |

| Law | Federal Law No. 10 of 2017 | Federal Decree-Law No. 9 of 2022, in force since 15 December 2022 |
| Withdrawing a report | Mostly through the employer | Since September 2024 the worker can also apply; MOHRE verifies |
| Filing outside Dubai | Mainly at service centres | MOHRE app and website with UAE Pass, business centres, Tawseel |
| Agency refund | Depended on the agency | MOHRE rules: replacement or refund, pro-rata after probation |

❓ Frequently asked questions
1. What should I do if my maid absconds in Dubai?
Check she is safe, try to reach her and keep records. If she is still missing after more than 7 days, file an absconding report with GDRFA through an Amer centre or GDRFA. If she is on a Tadbeer visa, tell the centre, which reports it.
2. How many days before I can report an absconding domestic worker?
MOHRE's service page says the worker must be absent for more than 7 days, with her location unknown and no way to contact her.
3. How much does an absconding report cost?
Outside Dubai MOHRE lists AED 315, and business centres may add a commission of up to AED 72. In Dubai the report goes through GDRFA and you pay the fee shown when you apply.
4. Where do I file an absconding report in Dubai?
With GDRFA Dubai, at an Amer centre or a GDRFA customer happiness centre. Domestic worker reports in Dubai are not filed through MOHRE.
5. Where do I file an absconding report in Abu Dhabi or Sharjah?
Through the MOHRE app or website with UAE Pass, a MOHRE business centre or Tawseel. ICP then verifies the report.
6. How long does an absconding report take?
About 2 working days for MOHRE and ICP to check it. You receive the decision by SMS and email.
7. What documents do I need to report an absconding maid?
Her passport or visa copy if available, her Emirates ID or unified number, the employment contract and proof of your attempts to contact her.
8. My Tadbeer maid ran away. Who reports it?
The Tadbeer centre, because it is her sponsor. Tell the centre the same day and ask about a replacement.
9. Can I get my recruitment fee back if my maid absconds?
Often yes. Licensed centres and agencies must replace the worker or refund the recruitment fee when she leaves without a valid reason: full in set cases during the 6-month probation, pro-rata after it.
10. Do I still have to pay an absconding maid's salary?
You owe the salary for the days she worked and her other dues. The law expects dues to be settled within 10 days of the end of the contract.
11. Am I responsible for my absconding maid's overstay fine?
After a valid absconding report the worker is responsible for her own status. Without a report the visa stays on your file, which is why reporting matters.
12. Can I keep my maid's passport?
No. The worker keeps her own passport and Emirates ID; holding them is against the law.
13. How do I cancel the visa of a maid who absconded?
If she cannot be reached, the approved absconding report leads to the cancellation of her permit and residence. If she has left the UAE or agrees to leave, the visa can be cancelled normally.
14. Can I withdraw an absconding report?
Yes, in set cases: the absence was 10 days or less, she was at work, she returned to her agency, the report was inaccurate, or MOHRE cancels it with your approval.
15. Can the worker cancel an absconding report herself?
Since September 2024 a domestic worker can apply to MOHRE to cancel a report. MOHRE checks the complaint, and an unresolved case can go to court.
16. How do I check an absconding status in the UAE?
Through the MOHRE app with UAE Pass, the GDRFA Dubai app or website for Dubai visas, or the ICP website. MOHRE's call centre is 600 590 000.
17. What happens if I file a false absconding report?
A false report, for example to avoid paying the worker's dues, can be cancelled and lead to penalties for the employer.
18. Can I hire a new maid after an absconding case?
Usually yes, once the report is approved and the old visa no longer blocks your file. With Tadbeer, ask the centre for a replacement.
19. Is a maid who resigns with notice absconding?
No. Ending the contract with notice, or because the employer broke the contract, is a contract matter for MOHRE, not absconding.
20. Should I call the police when my maid disappears?
If you think she may be hurt or in danger, call the police on 999 first. The absconding report is a separate step.
21. Does the absconding report apply to drivers and nannies too?
Yes. It covers every domestic worker category sponsored by a family, including nannies, drivers, cooks and housemaids.
