There is no official UAE visa called a “freelance visa”

The name itself is the first red flag.

Check any official UAE source — ICP, GDRFA, the government portal u.ae — and you will not find a residence visa category named “freelance visa”. What exists officially is a freelance or self-employment permit (issued by the labour authorities or a free zone) combined with the correct residence category for self-employed people, such as the Green Residence. That combination is the real, legal way to freelance in the UAE.

How the scam works, step by step

A one-year company selling two-year visas — the numbers never add up.

1. A company is opened. The agency registers a company whose only real business is selling visas.
2. A 1-year trade license is used. The company exists on paper, with the cheapest possible license.
3. 2-year employment visas are sold as “freelancer visas”. Buyers are quietly registered as the company’s employees — often dozens of them in the first months.
4. The company is never renewed. Once the visas are sold, the license is left to expire. The company becomes a shell with no office, no activity and no one answering.
5. The visa holders are stranded. Their visa is tied to a dead company — renewals, cancellations and family sponsorship all start failing.

What actually happens to the visa holder

The problems arrive exactly when you need your visa to work.

• Renewal is blocked. A residence visa is renewed by its sponsor. If the company is expired or in violation, there is no one to file your renewal.
