1 Know the timeline

You have 120 days from your baby's birth.

UAE immigration gives parents a 120-day grace period from the date of birth to obtain the passport and stamp the residence visa. Start early — once the grace period expires, daily overstay fines apply. The good news: the whole journey fits comfortably inside 120 days when each phase is handled in order.

120-Day Grace PeriodFrom the birth date

Counted from your baby's birth date, not from when you collect documents. It covers the entire process — birth certificate → MOFA → passport → Emirates ID → visa. Daily fines apply after Day 121, so it's safest to start within the first 2 weeks.

Sponsor SalaryAED 4,000 minimum

The sponsoring parent must earn at least AED 4,000/month — or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation. A mother can sponsor the newborn directly; no NOC from the father is required.

2 The full journey

The newborn visa process, in 5 phases.

Every step explained — what happens, who does it, and what you do. Each phase builds on the previous one, so the order matters.

1

Pre-Documentation

Phase 1: Pre-documentation — passports, Emirates IDs and marriage certificate

Before your baby arrives, keep these ready — the hospital asks for them within hours of birth:

  • Father's passport & Emirates ID

    Originals and clear copies

  • Mother's passport & Emirates ID

    Originals and clear copies

  • Attested marriage certificate

Must be attested for UAE use — start early

If your marriage certificate isn't attested yet, we can handle the full attestation for you. Earlier is better — it takes time. See attestation service
2

Birth Certificate

Phase 2: Birth certificate issued via the DHA portal
  • Birth notification — the hospital issues it within hours of delivery.
  • Hospital upload — the hospital uploads your documents to the DHA portal and registers your phone & email.
  • DHA review & payment link — DHA reviews and sends a payment link to your registered contact.
  • Online payment & delivery — pay online; the certificate is couriered to you. No government office visit needed.
Request English too: the Arabic certificate is mandatory, but most embassies need the English version for the passport. Getting both now saves a translation later.
3

MOFA Attestation

Phase 3: MOFA attestation — official document stamped and sealed

The physical birth certificate must be attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) before it's legally accepted for the passport and the visa.

  • Full door-to-door service

We collect the original birth certificate from your home, complete the MOFA attestation on your behalf, and return the attested document to you — no government office visit needed.

4

Passport Issuance

Phase 4: Passport issuance at the embassy or consulate

Your baby's passport is issued by your home country's embassy or consulate. The exact steps vary by country, but the flow is consistent:

  • Book an appointment through the embassy/consulate portal.
  • Attend with originals: attested birth certificate, both parents' passports, baby's photo (white background).
  • Submit the application — fees vary by country.
  • Receive the passport — anywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks depending on the country.
Heads up: embassy timelines are the least predictable part. If your country is slow, prioritise this phase early in the 120-day window.
5

Visa Issuance

Phase 5: Emirates ID and residence visa stamping
  • Emirates ID application — filed first; required before visa stamping.
  • Visa stamping application — submitted once the EID file is open.
  • Immigration review — the residence visa is approved; you get the digital copy by email/SMS.
  • Emirates ID delivery — the physical card is printed and couriered to you.
Good to know: children under 18 are exempt from the medical fitness test and biometric fingerprinting. Only a recent passport-sized photo is needed.

6 Common questions

Newborn visa FAQ

Real questions from real parents. Tap to expand.

What is the time limit to apply for a newborn visa in the UAE?
Parents have a grace period of exactly 120 days from the baby's date of birth to secure the passport and stamp the UAE residence visa. We strongly recommend starting within the first 2 weeks to leave room for embassy delays.
Are there any fines for delaying the newborn visa?
Yes. If the residence visa is not stamped within the 120-day grace period, a daily overstay fine applies for every day beyond that limit.
Does a newborn baby require a medical fitness test?
No. Children under 18 are exempt from the medical fitness test (blood test and x-ray) required for UAE residence visas.
What is the minimum salary required to sponsor a newborn?
To sponsor a child, the sponsor must earn at least AED 4,000/month, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation.
Can the mother sponsor the newborn baby's visa?
Yes. A mother can sponsor her newborn directly — no NOC from the father is needed. She just needs to meet the salary requirement (AED 4,000/month, or AED 3,000 plus employer-provided accommodation).
Is an English birth certificate mandatory?
For UAE government procedures, only the Arabic birth certificate is mandatory. English is optional, but we highly recommend it — your embassy will usually need it to issue the passport.
Why do I need MOFA attestation for a UAE birth certificate?
Even though the certificate is issued in the UAE, MOFA attestation is required for it to be legally accepted by your embassy for the passport and by immigration for the visa.
Does the baby need fingerprinting for the Emirates ID?
No. Infants are exempt from biometric fingerprinting. Only a recent, high-quality passport-sized photo with a white background is needed.
Is health insurance mandatory for the newborn?
Yes. In Dubai, valid health insurance is mandatory — the visa stamping cannot be completed until the baby is enrolled in an approved plan.
Can I travel with my baby before the visa is stamped?
It's strongly advised not to. If the baby leaves before the residence visa is stamped, they'll need an entry permit or tourist visa to re-enter, which complicates the process.
What if my baby is born outside the UAE?
The procedure differs. You first obtain the baby's passport from your home country, then apply for an entry permit for the newborn to enter the UAE, and finally proceed with visa stamping after arrival.
Do I need an Ejari or tenancy contract to sponsor my baby?
No. An Ejari or tenancy contract is not required. The main requirements are the sponsor's valid residence visa, a salary certificate (AED 4,000+, or 3,000+ with accommodation), and the baby's attested birth certificate and passport.
Do both parents need to have a valid UAE visa?
At least the sponsoring parent must hold a valid UAE residence visa and meet the salary requirement. The other parent must also be legally in the UAE under a valid status.
How long does the visa stamping process take?
Once all documents are ready (attested birth certificate + passport + insurance), the Emirates ID application and visa stamping together typically take 5–10 working days. The Emirates ID card follows shortly after.
Can I get the passport without attesting the marriage certificate?
In most cases, no — embassies require the attested marriage certificate as parental proof. If yours isn't attested yet, start that process as soon as possible; it can take weeks.
