Lost Your Emirates ID in the UAE? How to Apply for a Duplicate (Replacement)

Losing your Emirates ID always seems to happen at the worst time — right before a bank appointment, a flight, or a Tasheel transaction. So first, take a breath. A lost Emirates ID is not the headache it used to be, and getting a duplicate is now one of the simpler things you'll deal with as a UAE resident.
We process these replacement applications regularly, so here's the honest, no-fluff version of how it works — what it costs, how long it takes, and the one or two things people always get wrong.
⚡ The 30-second answer
Your replacement is handled through ICP. You usually don't need a police report, you must be inside the UAE to apply, and the moment your new card is issued, the lost one is automatically switched off.
First, what to do the moment you realise it's gone
Before you start imagining worst-case scenarios, here's all that actually needs to happen if you've lost your Emirates ID:
- Don't panic, and don't rush to a police station — for a normal lost card, you don't need a police report.
- Make sure you're inside the UAE (more on why below).
- Apply for the duplicate Emirates ID — yourself on the ICP app, or through a typing centre.
- Pay the fee — AED 456 on your own, or around AED 486 through a centre.
- Track it and wait for delivery, usually 2 to 4 working days.
That's genuinely it. Everything below is just the detail behind each step.
Do you actually need a police report?
There's one sensible exception. If you think your Emirates ID was stolen or could be misused — say it went missing with your wallet or phone — filing a police report is a smart move purely for your own protection. It's not required to get the duplicate; it's just good cover if someone tries something with your details. For an everyday "I can't find it anywhere" situation, skip the police station and go straight to the application.
The one real catch: you have to be inside the UAE
Don't stress about being abroad without the card for a short while: your residency is tied to your file, not the plastic card, so it isn't the disaster it feels like.
Two ways to apply for your duplicate Emirates ID
You've got two routes, and honestly, both are fine — it comes down to whether you'd rather do it yourself or hand it off.
Option 1 — Do it yourself on ICP with UAE Pass
You can apply directly on the ICP Smart Services website or the ICP UAE app, logging in with UAE Pass. Because your details are already in the ICP system, most of the form fills itself in — you're mostly reviewing and confirming. This is the fastest way to get your Emirates ID replacement done online without setting foot in a centre.
Option 2 — Let a typing centre or service provider do it
Not in the mood to wrestle with forms? A typing centre, Amer centre, or authorised service provider will prepare and submit everything for you. You hand over the basics, they handle the submission and payment.
📋 What they'll usually need from you:
- A copy of your passport
- A recent passport-size photo
- Your delivery address
- Your mobile number
So what does a lost Emirates ID replacement actually cost?
The part everyone really wants to know. There's no mystery here — the government fee is fixed, and the only variable is whether someone's helping you.
The full ICP government charge for the replacement — nothing hidden.
Same AED 456 ICP fee + a service charge that ICP caps at AED 30.
The way we see it, the AED 456 is the same no matter who clicks "submit." The only thing you pay extra for is convenience — so choose whatever saves you the most hassle, eyes open.
How long it takes — and how to keep an eye on it
Once you submit, ICP reviews the request, approves it, prints the new card, and couriers it to the address on your application. The whole thing is far quicker than it used to be — in most cases the duplicate Emirates ID lands within 2 to 4 working days.
Will your old, lost Emirates ID still work?
So if the lost card turns up later in a coat pocket or a "lost and found," you don't need it — the new one has already taken over. And if you ever genuinely suspect someone has your old card and might misuse it, a quick police report is worth it for peace of mind.
Does the new card reset your expiry date?
This one surprises people: no, it doesn't. Your replacement carries the same validity period as the card you lost. It's a duplicate — a like-for-like reissue — not a renewal, so your expiry date stays exactly where it was. If your ID was due to expire soon anyway, that's a separate renewal process.
A few things worth remembering
- You usually don't need a police report to replace a lost Emirates ID.
- A report only makes sense if theft or misuse is a real risk.
- You must be inside the UAE when you apply.
- The new card keeps the same validity — it's a duplicate, not a renewal.
- The old card is deactivated automatically once the new one is issued.
- Apply yourself via ICP and UAE Pass, or through a typing centre / Amer centre.
- Cost is AED 456 direct, or about AED 486 through a centre (AED 30 cap).
- You can track the duplicate in the ICP app; it usually arrives in 2–4 working days.
Quick recap
If you've lost your Emirates ID in the UAE, you can apply for a duplicate through ICP with UAE Pass, or through a typing centre — no police report needed in normal cases, as long as you're inside the country when you apply. Doing it yourself costs AED 456; through a centre it's about AED 486 with the permitted AED 30 service charge. You can track it on the ICP app, the old card switches off the moment the new one is issued, and the replacement keeps your original expiry date. Most people have the new card in hand within a few working days.
